Both Nidoran learn Poison Sting too though, which is a strategy I've used in the past - although I think the female Nidoran learn Double Kick before Poison Sting, so you probably wouldn't waste your time with poison, because you'd be high enough level by the time you learn it that Brock is simple. Edit: His point still stands, because it's still not worth it to try to siege him out like that when you can just level up your starter and win handily in casual playthroughs. He just said only Weedle could inflict status, but forgot a few things. It's an honest mistake.

5:02 I would say your tier listing should definitely account for level up speed. After all, your question is "Can you Beat Pokemon Red/Blue with Only a *?". Level up speed plays a significant impact on the ease of your run, both in grinding levels, and in using the badge boost glitch. To quote yourself "It giveth, and taketh away...". I think it is perfectly reasonable to say something like "Due to it's level up speed, the early game is signficant less painful for Jigglypuff, however it suffers in the late game as I have to carefully manage my exp during the elite 4". (making assumptions, haven't finished the video yet). Love the series, thankyou JRose, I immediately watch whenever a new video pops up :D Keep it up my dude \m/\m/
@_mako4 жыл бұрын
Doesn't the in-game time account for that already though? If a Pokémon is at a lower level at a higher time, it means it takes longer to level up on average. Of course there's a lot of variables involved in that as well but if we start nitpicking, the whole tier list idea gets thrown out the window.
@undeddjester4 жыл бұрын
@@_mako Well, I was more angling at JRose's criticism of the value of his own tier list, arguing level up speed skews the results. I'm arguing his list can still account for that without reducing the value of his list 🙂 You can see this at the end, where Jiggly's numbers arent actually that bad, but despite that, it still drops a tier against similar time/level pokemon. I would argue this is fine. @jrose11 Perhaps a difficulty rating for each pokemon might smooth that out?

Even though I know it's not extra effective, and that most other types including normal would be just as effective. 3:00 -- "Why would anyone use a Weedle" Funny enough, in Gen 1 games, I don't know if it is a glitch, but Poison type moves have a significantly higher probability rate of poisoning Pokemon that resist "Poison" attacks, excluding Poison types themselves since they cannot get Poisoned. So I personally frequently used Weedle/Kakuna/Beedril against Brock, especially when the Onix uses "Bide" in certain versions. I averaged a "Poison" status condition about 75% of every use of Poison-Sting against Rock-Type Pokemon throughout the game... ^^^Since that only ever happens in 1st Gen games, I always simply assumed it was a glitch somehow. Or it might be related to Speed akin to "Critical Hits" since all Rock-Type Pokemon are slower than Beedrill in-particular! Needless to say, poisoning Brock's Pokemon made facing him during the early game massively easier; because even if he cures the poisoning, that would simply give me a free turn to use "Poison-Sting" again. It is a surprisingly useful strategy.........
@mistermr21472 жыл бұрын
Proof?
@marcossimian95832 жыл бұрын
@@mistermr2147, Such as what? Are you wanting game coding?? Or are you simply wanting video proof??? Frankly, I don't know what I can provide that would convince you to be honest. Because if you don't believe me, then my best advise is to simply try it out for yourself. I'm fairly certain it was exclusively a "Gen 1" issue where any type that "resisted" Poison moves were more easily poisoned themselves. Kinda ironic, but it served as a fairly reliable strategy against Brock in-particular whenever I play through the original Red or Blue (or Green in Japan). Granted, maybe people weren't aware of this glitch because most people wouldn't intentionally use Poison-type attacks against enemies you know to be resistant toward it. My alternative strategy would usually entail getting a Fighting-type move from Mankey or Nidoran. But simply inflicting the "Poison" status condition was much easier... Granted, that's assuming you have enough defense to survive the battle for "Poison" to kill! Usually, I would start with Weedle until I successfully poison Brock's Geodude and Onix (which would typically only take 1 to 3 turns with "Poison-Sting"), then I would switch to a Pokemon with greater defense. Alternatively, if I have already evolved the Weedle into a Kakuna, then I would simply spam "Harden" while waiting for the opponent to die from "Poison". Not a particularly difficult strategy really... You should give it a try! Pretty much any noob can pull it off......... :-D

This reminds me of when I was a kid. On my first playthrough when I was 5, I realized how broken sleep was and made my team focus entirely around my Venasaur using sleep powder and my Jigglypuff using Sing. And no, I did not evolve my Jigglypuff. Why? Because even though I had a guidebook that told me what moves Pokemon could learn, so I knew stone evolutions didn't learn new attacks, I didn't know when Jigglypuff would learn its last attack and I assumed the last attack would be the best, so I just never evolved it 😂 brilliant move kid me, brilliant. Either way, I still loved it. Jigglypuff is still a favorite of mine just for that

The amount of luck in this run was absolutely wild, and at some points almost necessary to save time level grinding. Have you done a Mankey solo run yet? I don't see it on the playlist but I could have missed it elsewhere. It could pose a massive challenge: - It only learns Low Kick in Yellow, so you wouldn't have it in Red/Blue against Brock. - Its level up moves are all Normal type aside from Seismic Toss at 33. - The only damaging moves it can learn by TM that aren't Normal or Fighting are Toxic, Dig, Rock Slide, and Thunder/bolt, which gives it pretty bad type coverage. - Dig is arguably the only consistently good TM choice (Rock Slide is unreliably inaccurate and Mankey has abysmal Special), though Toxic could potentially be helpful in the late game. - Its attack and speed are fairly good for a first-form, but the rest of its stats leave a lot to be desired. - Charmander as the rival's starter would probably be the hardest: -- Charizard has super effective STAB, is immune to Dig, resists Fighting, and is only weak to Rock Slide and Thunder/bolt (again, the former is inaccurate and Mankey has super low Special) -- The rival would also have Gyarados (same points as Charizard aside from SE STAB) and Exeggutor (a fairly bulky Psychic type). The only major battles that don't seem difficult on paper are Surge, Giovanni, and Lorelei (Slowbro will spam Amnesia and the rest are weak to Fighting); with stats and movepool in mind, even *Bruno* could be a challenge. I would love to see you pull this off.

9:40 "he should be demoted to Ensign Surge" *actually*, he's in the Army, therefore, Lieutenant is the lowest he can be demoted to, without being stripped of his comission for incompetence. Is this completely useless trivia that does nothing for literally anyone? Yes. Am I potentially coming off like an asshole for being the token military nerd that no one likes to watch military movies with cuz I point out every flaw in said movie? Yes. I'll go sit in the corner and color (with markers, cuz the Marine ate them all)

Wouldnt the Squirtle one be a lot easier with withdraw? I would imagine a bulky special attacker most benefits from badge boost. I just cant legitimately imagine bulky water with a lot of coverage with badge boost being on the same level as super slow quad weak to everything 0 special geodude using the same strat. (Just finished an Oddish one myself, basically a bulbasaur run but no body slam i had to use double edge).

I think that run was done before Jrose fully understood the badge boost glitch, so I don't think he even used Withdraw when he did Squirtle.

12:13 = Hold on. WHAT?! They give the Rival's Gyarados Hydro Pump THAT EARLY IN THE GAME?! I'll have to redo Solo-Cubone by making sure my rival starts with Bulbasaur instead of Squirtle next time. Seems like a Bulbasaur Rival would actually be harder for a Ground-type than a Squirtle Rival would be. 16:29 = Again, I always thought SPEED was the stat Surge's badge boosted. At least, that's what the game itself claims. Defense would be boosted by Koga's badge. (checks Bulbapedia) Well, I'll be a Mankey's uncle, the game lied to us AGAIN. Having a little trouble deciding right now whether Game Freak was worse back then or is worse now.
@OmegaTyrant4 жыл бұрын
Yeah all trainer Gyarados have Hydro Pump regardless of their level, because Gyarados is programmed to know Hydro Pump naturally at level 1, which doesn't come into play for the player but since each AI trainer's pokemon have their moveset treated as if they were wild pokemon, their evolved pokemon know these "level 1 moves" you don't get access to. So if you're weak to both Grass and Water, or you're neutral against each starter, the Venusaur team is usually the best for the rival; he gets Gyarados with Hydro Pump and Dragon Rage as soon as Pokemon Tower while he doesn't get Arcanine and Exeggutor until the champion battle (while they also have shit movesets unlike the Gyarados), and then for a Grass type the Venusaur is a lot more threatening than the Exeggutor, since Exeggutor's moveset is just Hypnosis, Stomp, and Barrage.
@RedSalamander4 жыл бұрын
@@OmegaTyrant Had to double-check Serebii for Gyarados' moves, but you're right. I didn't realize Hydro Pump was a Level 1 move for Gyarados in RGB, since you can't find wild Gyarados in RGB. And while Yellow does let you catch wild Gyarados, they changed its Level 1 moves to Tackle only. When I did my Cubone run, I had the rival pick Squirtle because I originally figured that was a bigger individual threat than Bulbasaur would be due to 1) Blastoise's higher Defense and 2) Cubone not learning anything to beat Water-types easily (Cubone can learn Ice and Fire attacks to wither Grass-types). But I found Lance's Gyarados to be the biggest threat in that run. Having to fight MULTIPLE Gyarados would be a drastic difficulty spike, especially with an actually competent Grass-type beside it four out of five times. Alright then, Cubone vs Bulbasaur Rival to be done... at some point soon.
@OmegaTyrant4 жыл бұрын
@@RedSalamander Yeah the Blastoise is probably a bigger threat than the Venusaur to a Ground type, but Venusaur + Gyarados for the four later Rival fights is just going to be so much better than Blastoise + Exeggcute/Exeggutor (if only they thought to give the AI Exeggutor some sort of STAB move... even in Yellow they didn't fix that when they fixed other glaring moveset issues like Giovanni's pokemon not actually having Ground moves). Another point for Venusaur is if you're relying on Badge Boost stacks (such as with a Geodude and Onix run), it has Razor Leaf starting from Silph Co. with a nigh-guaranteed crit rate to just bypass your boosts and probably OHKO, so you have to knock it out in one hit or have to pray the RNG has it pick Solar Beam or Mega Drain (or Leech Seed and Vine Whip in earlier battles).
