Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

@@MrEnte3000 Crabhammer is way better, at least for fighting Agatha specifically. It has a boosted critical hit rate so for krabby it's critting almost 80% of the time. It's so much better at beating Agatha than that ridiculous mimic hypnosis then try to get good sleep luck over many turns when you can just try to get enough crits to win. For general use, consistency is nice, but krabby's special is so weak that you need luck to win and crabhammer's is better than JRose's ridiculous strategy.

Fun Fact: Krabby is the only NFE Pokemon in Gen 1 that you can actually solo the game with without catching a single other Pokemon (without abusing glitches to perform major skips). Krabby is one of only 4 Pokemon (Krabby, Kingler, Lickitung, and Mew) which can learn all mandatory HM moves needed to complete the game (Cut, Surf, Strength), and it's the only NFE mon among them.

Krabby is actually based on a samurai crab or a sand bubbler crab, although they would definitely both dig in real life, especially the one named after the sand it digs. Dwebble is based more on a hermit crab - hermit crabs don't have shells of their own, so they use abandoned shells or rocks they hollow out or even sometimes garbage they find as their shells. I do believe all crabs dig, though, which is one of the main functions of their claws aside from offense and defense.
@Skynowskij

As far as I know (I'm not a biologist, but I heard this in a documentary or from a teacher at school), the crabs living in the sand dig (using their legs), those living among the rocks don't (unsurprisingly).

I could be wrong, but I don't think Jrose was actually suggesting Krabby is a hermit crab. I think he was just throwing that out there in his disappointment at Krabby lacking Dig EDIT: My bad, I wasn't finished re-watching and had forgotten he did specifically say it's a hermit crab, which it obviously isn't, and so you are also obviously correct. I'd argue no, unless you're giving it Dig before getting the TM in Cerulean which is giga-cheating. I forgot if Ghastly really struggled anywhere, but Krabby loses quite a bit of time early and then has to spend time backtracking for Fly and Erika. I mean I guess with Dig you could beat Surge but it's certainly not consistent, it's just whether he clicks TBolt or not. Plus Agatha still isn't 100%, because Krabby is slower.

Krabby can learn all of the required hm's (cut/surf/strength), so it's possible to literally beat the game with only krabby. It's a fun challenge for anyone to try, but I don't think it'd make for a great video because the strategy for the last half of the game is basically just level up. But maybe an optimized "what's the lowest level you can beat R/B with just a krabby" could be kinda interesting

Not 100% positive it was though, since itd mean losing Surf, which meant you couldn't early battle Blain (meaning harder fights with Rival and Sabrina).

I guess I understand why he deleted it now, although it wasn’t explained too well. Since he is relying on badge boost glitch, I believe a critical hit would ignore the boosts. Still, with 3 badge boosts, that is only a 42% increase where the critical should be close to double.

Leave it to Jrose to once again find some really obscure Gen 1 glitch there's little to no documentation on in a random run... Using mimic on a pokemon that switched out will result in Mimic copying the move into the 2nd move slot, regardless of Mimic's actual position, and will use that Move's PP (i.e. the PP of the move that was originally in the second slot) for the PP of the copied move. It also causes the opponent's sprite to disappear. This is actually two separate bugs happening at once. The sprite hiding one is due to the game calling LoadScreenTilesFromBuffer1 in the mimic function despite the fact that the last time tiles were saved was at the beginning of a turn, so if the mimic user goes last, the screen will be restored to how it was at the beginning of the turn. This will more often turn out like, if you lost health to an attack, you will see the HUD and HP bar with the health you originally had at the beginning of the turn for a moment, until the HUD is properly drawn again. Notice also how Golbat's name changes back to Gengar for a second after the move to copy is selected, which is indicative of when was the last time tiles were saved during the switch enemy function. The slot mismatch one is due to the game getting confused and setting the menu item to 1 (which corresponds to the second position in the menu), thus losing the original value from when you selected mimic. The only remotely useful trick I can think of is to use a Pokemon that only knows mimic to have it learn the cooltrainer move similarly to how you'd do with the Ditto transform glitch. And well, the fact that you can use this to mimic four moves at the same time, by repeteadly swapping the mimiced move in the second position out of it with the select button in the battle menu. Hope the random person reading this found it helpful, and also to reiterate, this is one of those rare glitches we really don't have a ton of information on, so most of this is speculative based on what we can figure out through experimentation with this bug.

You say that levelling up against Agatha isn't effective because you'd need to be very high to outspeed, but surely reducing the amount of Surfs it takes to defeat a Gengar would also make it much easier, reducing the amount of turns that they have to stay asleep

17:01 watch as JRose makes a blunder for the ages! Crabhammer is a move like Slash, which has a high crit ratio. So even though on paper it's a weaker and less accurate surf, in practice it has 180 Base Power for the cost of accuracy and not being affected by special badge boosts. Probably would've made an even dumber lottery of a fight but might've made it a lot faster!
@viola8422
@viola8422 Жыл бұрын
Probably a lot less tbh when you ro normal power moves normally the 1/3 boost is actually worth it DPT since you make up a lot for the miss a bit,but this is double which is insane

Amusingly enough, it is possible to get a Krabby with Dig in Gen I. In Gen II, Krabby can get Dig as an Egg Move (and no, despite the Dig TM still existing, it cannot learn the move from TM until Gen III; before then, it must be specifically learned as an Egg Move), so you can transfer that to a Gen I game with the Time Capsule. You can also get Amnesia on Krabby as an Egg Move, which might make for an amusing "Krabby with Special moves only" meme run. But yeah, Krabby and Kingler were mons that desperately needed the Gen IV physical/special split.

Just wanna say I've been watching your content for the past 3 years, and I have loved every bit of content you have produced. Definitely my favorite poketuber by far, I love your unique spin on challenges, the insight and speculation that goes into them, and the genuine love for the game and community you show in your content. I think Krabby should have been penalized a lot more in its tier placement for how much it struggled at various points, and it felt like you should have just levelled up more with it at the end instead of brute forcing getting lucky against Agatha. If it would have took Krabby until well into the 70s to get through Agatha with any more consistency like you claimed, then so be it, it would be a more accurate portrayal of how much it takes to get "consistent" with Krabby than banking on such low odds to actually win.
@2OP4YOU
@2OP4YOU Жыл бұрын
These runs are just for fun bro. Sometimes he just levels up & makes it more consistent and time accurate, sometimes he takes the lucky, inconsistent brute force strategy. In the end, the runs really mean nothing & purely entertainment, don’t take it so seriously.

honestly, i like kingler's anime cry more than krabby's. it makes the same sound, but the more "manly" voice it has just makes it so much funnier

I've been looking forward to the Krabby run! I love your vids and was inspired to do my own run a while back, Krabby only with no HM mons. Other than Mew, Krabby (and Kingler) is the only mon to be able to learn Cut, Strength and Surf in 1st gen. One of my favourite playthroughs I've done! Thanks for all the content Jrose, keep being awesome

I guess surf was better just because of accuracy, but crabhammer is a high crit rate move so you basically always crit. I guess it doesn't matter much though since you use body slam against everything not weak to water You would've one shot Aerodactyl though

Good video :) But, why not grind Krabby up for Agatha? You've done it with lots of pokemon in the past and you normally prioritise league consistancy over dumb luck. Seems like its ranking was a little high.

Krabby is one of my favourites to tackle Gen 1 with, as it learns cut, strength and surf. So I can actually complete the game without catching anything and with a pokedex count of 1 at the end. I can't remember what 4th move I used, I think it was Ice Beam to get through Lance, then Mimic to get through the Rival battle at the end
