Moltres proved that just being a Legendary does not mean the run will be easy! Will Articuno continue that trend, or demonstrate how powerful Legendary Pokemon can be?

Like if this were real and you were a Pokémon trainer going for the elite four and you finally got to his gym after a long journey. You’ve done your research you know he’s got electric types and he’s a Lieutenant, sounds pretty intimidating. You’re expecting big powerful machinery maybe massive generators powered by Pokémon that power the city or electric laser cannons I mean you already helped Bill change from a Pokémon to a human using some sophisticated technology so your expectations are pretty high. How deflated would you be once you opened that gym door to just see rows of trash cans full of trash with Lt. Surge behind a glass door flicking you off telling you “dig through my trash you little bitch.” And every time you flip the wrong switches he just points and laughs in your face. I can't imagine Zapdos beats Articuno because it has no game against Rock/Ground types, which show up a lot, and Ice Beam is just such a good move to have at level 1. On the other hand, even with the Rock/Ground problem, Drill Peck and Thunderbolt are way better than Moltres's Fire Spin and Fly, so I think Zapdos will come out ahead. Given that the Rock/Ground types tend to have atrocious movesets with inaccurate moves, I wonder if Substitute/Toxic might be a good strategy. As strange as it sounds, Rival starter should be Squirtle. This gives him the most threatening Champion team, with Blizzard on Blastoise, no easy OHKO Gyarados, and the more threatening Exeggutor in the grass slot.
@jernejfric48104 жыл бұрын
Zapdos might have a hard time against brock with only drill peck as its move. No way it succeeds with minimal battles and the time loss from that and later giovanni might be enough for it to lose against moltress as well
@OmegaTyrant4 жыл бұрын
Rock/Ground types aren't really a threat in Red/Blue because of the awful movesets they have from trainers not using TMs, so they really can't hurt Zapdos much in return. Brock will be annoying because of Gen 1 early game restrictions, and that Hiker with the exploding Geodudes and Graveler might be a problem, but Giovanni, Bruno's Onix, and Blue's Rhyhorn/Rhydon won't be a problem at all, especially when for Giovanni's gym battle and the latter two you'll have Mimic by then. Outside that Zapdos is one of the most broken pokemon in Gen 1 and the rest of the trainers you fight are not equipped well to handle him, so Zapdos will smoke Moltres easily, and is only barred from minimum battles by the early Brock wall. And while Zapdos can't do minimum battles, it probably could beat the Elite 4 at a lower level than Articuno (and probably with less luck needed too).
@pokemonxpixie4 жыл бұрын
Zapdos is high speed, OU (overused) tier. Drill Peck is going to be STAB (same type attack bonus) on top of critical hitting. I don't image the run will be hard at all. Also Exeggutor would get one shot

33:43 Lorelei is one of the few trainers with all 3 ai modifications. Modification 2 makes her more likely to use a move that can heal on the second turn.
@cereal75914 жыл бұрын
This. A lot of people attribute her using Rest only because it's a Psychic type move (which is misinterpreted as being "Super Effective" against Poisom and other types), which is true, but for some reason she is one of the very few Trainers to be told to almost always use an specific move on the 2nd turn. Technically, this makes her one of the few have all 4 Gen l AI Modifications (if you consider the "Special AI" a.k.a. Trainer Classes that use items a "modification", though I don't think that's the accurate term, so saying 3 is fine), given she both goes for "Super Effective" moves and has Super Potions that she might use when her Pokémon are in low health (doesn't always happen because it's decided by a RNG roll every turn). Fascinating.

@olehart58504 жыл бұрын
@@ShinyTillDawn Loreleis ai had an extra modification in yellow. But in all of gen 1 trainers had 0-3 modification (if we don't count extra modifications, like using items in battle) that decided how they fight. Modification 1 caused the trainer not to use a move that can only inflict a status effect if the player Pokémon already had a status effect. Modification 2 caused the trainer to be more likely to use a move from a long list of moves (mainly including status moves) on the second turn. Modification 3 caused the trainer to prefer super effective moves over not super effective moves. If the number is lower, the priority is higher (for example: If the trainer has modification 1 and 3 (for example Agatha) and the player has a paralyzed poison type, the ai won't use hypnosis even if modification 3 tells it to, since modification 1 doesn't allow it). The only trainers with all 3 modifications are Pokémaniacs and Lorelei. And Lorelei is the only trainer with all 3 modifications who can use items in battle.
@cereal75914 жыл бұрын
@@ShinyTillDawn Lorelei's Yellow change was very specific and only applied to her Dewgong: around 40% of her turns she will ignore type effectiveness, basically turning her "Good AI" (Modification 3) off. This was done because of the infamous Lorelei Softlock in Red and Blue. You might already know of it, if not, I suggest watching Pikasprey video about it. In a nutshell, you could enter an infinite loop if your Pokémon was weak to Psychic types, since Dewgong would always use Rest. If you locked yourself on a move (like Rage) that couldn't kill Dewgong while it was asleep, the battle would never end, since both of you would always use the same moves and never run out PP. But in Yellow, whenever Lorelei ignored type effectiveness, Dewgong had a chance of using any of it's moves: Rest, Aurora Beam, Bubblebeam or Take Down (though I'm not sure about each one's odds of being selected), breaking the cycle. Eventually someone would die.

35:14 "Ice type pokemon can't be frozen." Isn't that only true for ice type moves in gen 1? I thought it was: pokemon can't be given a status effect from a move of the type the pokemon is. So electric types can't be paralyzed by electric moves. Ice types can't be frozen BY ICE TYPE MOVES. Theoretically, Tri-Attack could freeze an ice type right? Idk I may be wrong. I think using it would be a little unfair, as it was a powerful mixed attacker that wrecked a lot of things in Gen 1. But if you want to witness the total carnage it could only dole out in Gen 1, that's fine. I think ti all depends on your mentality against those hurdles). For me, that pressure makes for a more interesting challenge, and gives you the incentive to learn the game to your best ability. Anyway, I'm loving your work and I'm looking forward for the next challenges!

13:30 the reason you often outspeed the Pidgeot only after Koga is because it gives you the Speed badge boost, which is a 12.5% boost to your speed. Unlike what the gym leaders tell you, you get the badge boosts in the order of your stats: ATK from Brock, DEF from Surge, SPE from Koga, SPC from Blaine.

It's only 25 mins slower than Mewtwo, and over an hour faster than Gastly, despite you making math errors, like using Bubblebeam over Ice Beam against Fire-types that were a range.

Pretty great run, & a neat video! Thanks for uploading! 0:13 Oh hey, no level up off of the starter's Pokemon. That Legendary EXP Group.... 1:02 I doubt it matters, but when did Articuno get to Level 6? Off of the Bug Catcher(s), I guess? 2:34 Oof, that Peck failing to KO.... 3:39 Surprising you'd teach it so early. For Fire-types already? To save PP? 4:04 Nice crit! 6:10 Wow, terrible luck for Lieutenant Surge. 6:25 Wait, what? Redoing a battle you won? 8:10 Hooray! 8:33 Wow, Kangaskhan gets to use Rage, lives having it powered up... & Giovanni wastes the opportunity with a Guard Spec. Goshdarnit, Giovanni. 8:48 Did you mean to teach Fly to Articuno instead of Spearow? 9:13 Barely not a OHKO. Oof. 10:43 Pesky Pidgeot. 11:17 Wow, Disable disabled FLY after all those Ice Beams? 11:33 Wow, Rival #5/"Rival Fival" being pretty hard. 12:58 The complexion of this battle? 13:42 Nice crit! 13:56 Them Legendary stat gains.... 15:07 Wow, you taught Toxic already? 15:43 Dang, it lived! Just barely, but still.... 16:13 Pfft. Great AI. -Maybe it's just scared to fainting of you.- 16:20 Wow, it lived a crit Fly. 16:36 Wow, big oof. 17:52 Talking about the Blaine battle before the footage of it is even being shown, eh? 18:23 Nice crit! 18:48 Pfft. 19:05 Didn't seem that unlucky, considering you also got a second Bubblebeam Speed drop on Rapidash, & Rapidash missed with Fire Spin.... 19:33 If Ice Beam was a crit, too, you mean, right? 19:39 Wow, the crit Super-Effective Ember just barely didn't KO, lol. 19:52 Blaine being frustrating seems unusual.... 20:20 When will Giovanni learn these Guard Spec.s don't help? Also, pfft, speeding it up right after. 20:52 It's a fun little idea thing to do. I'm sure we all have our quirks when gaming, & I, for one, don't really mind it, for all that that's worth. 22:02 Just noticed you've already replaced Bubblebeam & Toxic.... 23:02 Wow, quite lucky indeed! 24:50 Well, that was a rough start.... 25:02 Lol, very unimpactful crit. 25:35 Nice! 25:58 Oof. 26:07 Wow, replacing Mimic with Sky Attack?! 28:34 Oof, that unlucky crit. 29:00 Lol, helpful Confuse Ray? 29:40 X Defend Mattered? 30:06 Wow, Machamp actually did a Submission for once! 34:27 Nice! 39:42 I kinda know how that feels. Not particularly so from you, of course, though! 41:00 Nice! 41:23 Wow, narrow survival! 41:52 Nice! 42:19 Another nice crit! 42:31 Dang, over already....

How good is Articuno in later gens though, I have a feeling that it gets weaker since it gains an additional weakness and two additional types that resist it
@hollylucianta67114 жыл бұрын
Much much weaker. The split of the Special stat meant its Sp.Attack went from 125 to 90. Ice got nerfed to oblivion as you say. Stealth Rock ruined it competitively. Still my favorite Legendary, and I hope Galarian Form makes it much better.
@petrie9114 жыл бұрын
It's still pretty good in-game. Its stats are still solid and Ice is still a good attacking type. It does run into movepool issues, though if you can get a good Hidden Power, you get the TM pretty early in gens 2-4.

If you were to do Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, do you think you'd want to clump them in one video? Looking at their gen 1 stats, they have the advantage of starting with a move to trigger the Badge Boost Glitch. If I were to hazard a guess, I imagine that Hitmonlee does better early game due to starting with more accurate moves, Hitmonchan will probably catch up after SS anne and both start to use Body Slam religiously, and Hitmonchan will do better late game due to having Agility instead of Meditate as well as having better type coverage. Admittedly, my prediction could be off due to the type covering moves relying on Hitmonchan's abysmal special stat.

@petrie9114 жыл бұрын
Strangely I think Blastoise might be better. The Champion fight is usually the most important, and Blastoise has Blizzard there, whereas Venusaur's resisted STABs against Zapdos's 125 special are going to do nothing. Having Venusaur also means that the Rival has Gyarados, who is zero threat to Zapdos and doesn't have Exeggutor, which might be.

@ShinyTillDawn4 жыл бұрын
Stuff like STAB and type effectiveness do not directly affect a move's base power. From my math (lv 39 Articuno): Ice beam: 3 + 50.16(a/d) BubbleBeam: 4 + 45.76(a/d) a/d = attack divided by opponent's defense So Ice beam would still do more to fire types.
