Counter-argument: Yes, in the modern Boost games you can go fast just by pressing one button, but in those games the challenge comes from maintaining that speed, Sonic Unleashed & Generations in particular do a wonderful job at testing the player's reflexes to see if you can maintain your speed

that very final bit gave me a chuckle. but yeah, when i put together stages in my 2d sonic fan game, i try to cover 2 things 1. the weakest character can finish the stage 2. it can be completed without needing any special abilities like spindash. this way i can put more time into making speed rewards

Every last elevator platform in Spring Yard is 100% avoidable if you're skilled enough to pull off the necessary pathing. For instance, the very first elevator platforms in act 1. Using the red spring to launch yourself up the half-pipe, go left instead of right to catch a moving platform leading to a secret area with a few rings, an extra life, and a speed shoes box. using said box, continue along until you reach the second red spring and use it to launch yourself offscreen while holding right to avoid the bumper, and then just hold right to scale the wall preventing you from otherwise skipping the elevator platforms. Jump off of it from offscreen at the right time and you'll cover even more distance across the level. The elevators in spring yard are penalties you must learn to overcome.

Fun fact: In the original Sonic 3, you can't actually climb on Hydrocity Act 2's moving wall. You get pushed off instead - but you CAN make it in time to jump off the unmoving wall and glide over the spikes if you're really fast! So your route is still valid. x)

I think if the peel-out charged like the Sonic 2 spindash, but its max speed was Sonic's default running speed; but then the spindash took as long to charge as the peel-out does now, they'd be balanced with each other

Sonic should have a normal running speed cap; and his max speed(achieved normally by running down slopes) when you press down and charge by repeat pressing the a button (like charging in Sonic 2) should be able to get you up to the Max Speed by the super peel out (I'm imagining him crouched down revving his feet) but have you decelerate to the normal running speed a little quicker. (Would give the quick speed up a nice sense of speed). And the main reason I would want the spin dash gone? We have the dropdash. Works basically the same way and imo it's better than the spindash. Anyway this has been me rambling on about why I wish the super peel out would make a return and main-stay.
