One of the most asked questions on my channel. Why am I not a citizen of China yet? Why do I not have a Chinese green card? Why Do I have to get a new visa every year?

3. having total investment of over USD 1 million in the central part of the country;
4. having total investment of over USD 2 million in PRC.
Requirements:
1. Completed Application Form of Aliens for Permanent Residence in PRC;

3. Valid foreign passports or identification capable of substituting passports;
4. Certificate of health issued by Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau appointed by the Chinese government or issued by foreign medical agencies accredited by Chinese embassies or consulate offices (the Health Certificate is valid for 6 months since it is issued);
5. Proof of no criminal record abroad recognized by Chinese embassies or consulate offices.
6. Certificates of approval of foreign funded enterprises, certificate of registration, proof of combined annual inspection, report of assets valuation and proof of personal tax payment. One of my Chinese friends had to change her name when she got the Shenzhen hukou. It's because the last word in her name is 媛, but the hukou officer wrote it as 嫒. When she checked to see how to get a correction: she decided it's too expensive, so just used the wrong name.

the video was misleading. you dont get public healthcare in america, nor do you get pensions by being a citizen. most pensions are tied to your job, not by virtue of being a citizen, and if you're a bum on the street, who's never worked, you get no pensions. if you work at kmart, or fast food restraunts then you dont get healthcare. most americans have private healthcare, and its not by virtue of being a citizen either, rather it's reserved for those with good jobs. most americans i know never had healthcare, or a pension, and im talking about real americans working at mcdonalds. arguably, i heard that kadafi's Iibya had better healthcare, and pensions

That's where you're the one who's mislead amiga. Obviously, you don't watch nor read the US news do you? Perhaps you were not even aware of what Obamacare is or was do you?
@Hamidmahdi
@Hamidmahdi 7 жыл бұрын
that would have been true if it was still 2014. Since 2015 citizens living in the States had to switch over to Obamacare, which still needs some improvements, but if nothing else, it keeps hospitals from turning away patients. The system we had in place before was private insurance provided by your employer and if you weren't a full-time employee you just didn't get it, which means hospitals could and WOULD turn you away because they knew you wouldn't be able to pay them. Both systems are flawed, but Obamacare is a step in the right direction so that everyone has some form of healthcare in case of emergencies. The downside to nationwide healthcare is that sometimes you can be put on a long waiting list (as has been the case Canada and a few other countries) and you may not get treated in time. So many people would literally come to the States to get treatments for their ailments when the waiting lists in their own countries was too long.

@@fsdffdsf37 , 91.2 percent of Americans have health insurance, either through their job or govt programs. You could have just googled, "What percentage of Americans have health insurance." I work in social services. Any American living below the poverty line qualifies for food assistance, Medicade, likely Section 8 assistance for rent, and if there are young children at home WIC food assistance, cash assistance, and utility assistance. It is illegal for utility companies to cut service to homes with children and illegal for a hospital not to provide treatment in an emergency. Mental health facilities must keep any patient who is a threat to himself or others. Education is free until 12th grade and the govt. provides student loans to anyone accepted into University. Any child can be surrendered to the state at which point the state will provide all their needs including higher education until age 21. The parents retain visitation rights and the right to reclaim the child if they are capable of caring for it. Every physically and mentally capable American can join the military in the branch of his choice, where he will be given food, clothing, shelter, a child and family stipend, family healthcare, one month vacation a year, job training, and retirement with pension after 20 years. After 2 yrs of service he qualifies for the Montgomery GI Bill to pay for college. If he completes a 4 yr. degree, he can rejoin as an officer when his original term of enlistment is up.

@@rayva1 You realize that Obamacare forces you to buy a private healthcare insurance? In my country (EU) we have public healthcare which is funded through wage contributions. Private health insurance is putting money to greedy guy who then tells you how much you dont need treatment and how X Y and Z disqualifies coverage for a treatment, and stands over your bed with a stopwatch waiting to kick you out of a hospital bed not a second too late.

There are certain circumstances where you can become a Chinese citizen. When I was at China Radio InternationalI we had 3 staff members that became Chinese citizens. Stuart Parkinson who was originally from the UK joined the English Service of CRI in 198 when it still went by the name Radio Beijing. When he retired in 2007 he was offered citizenship. Victor Vimukthi who is from Sri Lanka was in our Sinhalese Service became a citizen after 30 years. Marie Dominque from France who worked in our French Service became a Chinese citizen after she retired in 2004 after being in the French Service since 1983. There was also another woman who lived in my building. Betty (forgot her family name), but she had moved to China in 1947 and in 1996 she was made a Chinese citizen. In 2000 I was asked by the English Service of China Radio International to create a Transcription Service. Something that CRI never had. I agreed to one year and Radio Netherlands who I was with in Hilversum continued my employment so when my contract at CRI ended I would just go back to them. The 1 year turned into 8 years, which after the 8 years I went right back to Radio Netherlands. After my first year at CRI I asked to stay one more year. After I completed my second year and was in the process of moving back to the Netherlands CRI offered to get me permanent residence if I agreed to stay for a few more years, which they did after I said yes. At the beginning of 2008 I left as Radio Netherlands wanted me to relocate to Taiwan where I have been since then. So yes in certain circumstances you can become a citizen and permanent resident.

I'm Chinese born in China. This video is misleading: most of the Chinese cities have pretty good public welfare, the author doesn't have proper welfare protection (probably he don't have PR) doesn't mean ordinary Chinese citizen don't have, I had been working in Beijing for about a decade, my welfare include free medicare (the maximum amount for self-payment of medicare is RMB 1800 per year, you just need to pay 10% of the amount that above RMB 1800, most companies have another complement commercial medicare (free for you), the remaining 10% and RMB 1800 self-payment will all be covered, so that you don't need to pay anything for medicare, like me), all of your medicare insurance fees that you paid will go to an account that specifically set up for you, you can withdraw it whenever you want; Another welfare is called "housing public accumulation fund", the intention is that if you pay 12% of your salary, the company you served should pay the same amount to the account that set up to you, you can use this money to buy a house and enjoy a discount interest rate when you have mortgage, if you want to quit that company, you can withdraw that amount of money, usually in Beijing, people don't permit to withdraw unless you quit current jobs, so that, in many times, the account for "housing public accumulation fund" will have huge amount of money after you pay that many years; Another welfare is retirement fund, same as western pension system, the difference is that you just need to pay the retirement insurance fee for about 15 years in China, then you can stop pay for that, and you get pensions from government after your age surpassing 60 for man and 55 for woman (retirement age will change to 65 for man and 60 for woman before 2020). All in all, the welfare system is different from city to city in China, the welfare in cities is better than in rural areas in general. The author is just for catching peopel's eyes when he states that "there is no welfare in China", actually, Chinese health care system is better than US - the Obamacare.

For those of you who want to learn even more, this week's edition of The Economist published an article regarding Chinese identity (“Who is Chinese? Setting a high and strict level of green card can imply unwillingness of the government to boost population from foreigners to a certain extent. It may look less valuable to be Chinese from a perspective of foreigners, and you do enjoy more benefits than Chinese citizens regarding the same job position. However, please keep in mind that arbitrage of foreigner's benefits has been restricted through these years. You also disclosed this change of work visa that will implement class A, B and C on foreigners very soon. In short, many foreigners in China do not show they are better than Chinese except English language, and oversea Chinese students can be more competitive than foreigners to get job opportunities after improving English.

The only thing I disagree with is about being paid less for being a Chinese citizen. They pay more because you're a foreigner, and that's not a question of your passport - it's what you look like and what you sound like. You think if a born and raised American applies for a job with the added bonus that he doesn't have any visa issues, they're going to offer him a lower salary? If anything they'll offer more because they'll see him as stable and easy to pick up. Plus if he violates terms of the contracts, they can actually do something about it - whereas if he's a foreigner he can just go back home and tell them to fuck off. This happens in Hong Kong a lot where permanent residency is very easy to obtain, and companies see hiring those with it as a major bonus.

no, health care? are you kidding me? Everyone just needs to pay about USD30-50 per year, the insurance will cover about 60-80% of the total medical fee here in Guangdong no matter you have a job or not. For people whose company buy the insurance for them, the insurance will cover even more. Other places in China should have the similar policy. My father doesn't have a job and broke his arm two months ago. Because he has paid the health insurance (like 30 USD per year), out of the 5000rmb hospital fee, we just paid 2000rmb. We went to the best hospital in our city, if we go to other hospitals, the insurance will cover up to 80%. The migrant workers might not have health insurance while they are in other provinces.

One can only renounce his/her home citizenship to his/her home country; what he/she tells the Chinese government is irrelevant. In other words, it only matters if the Chinese government requires proof of renunciation of previous citizenships, and not merely a statement to them of such renunciation (which has no legal weight to the previous country, in most cases).

WOw C-milk. I'm surprised how after so many years of living in China you still have so many misunderstandings about some of its basic facts and stuff. Won't really blame you as China really is changing fast, so much so that you need to actively keep updated with what's happening all the time. From my personal perspective, one of my relative did a heart surgery that would supposedly cost us around 100,000 RMB but in the end it just boiled down to around 15 to 20 percents of that. The government and the med system actually accounted for the other 80-85 percents. I don't think in US they have something that close. I have heard of too many friends here in US whose families have to resort to "GoFundMe" to get their medical bills covered

You have to give up your own nationality if you get Chinese citizenship, so don’t do that. Work visa or visitor visa is enough. If you hold a American passport or Canadian passport with Chinese 10-year visitor visa, you can stay in China for six months. After that, you can just go to Hong Kong for a while, then you can come back to China with another six months staying time.

Hi laowhy86, I have watched a lot of your videos, and really enjoy them, and enjoy seeing your life in China. But I noticed that in your recent videos (from 2016's), your mood changed and you might start to feel a little disappointed about your living in China. Can I ask about your future plans? Continue to live in China or come back to the US? Anyway, keep on and enjoy your life!

@laowhy86 It's way easier to naturalise into a Chinese nationality in Hong Kong (thousands of successful applications per year) but without the Mainland hukou citizenship, so you cannot enjoy full social rights and benefits in China. But still you'll be given a Chinese HKSAR passport (158 visa-free countries up till now) and a permit to enter in and out of China way more easily, as you'll be counted as a Chinese national at the border. Moreover, for naturalisation in the Mainland generally, competent knowledge of Chinese is the foremost prerequisite, while in HK, passable Chinese is enough I've heard.

I read an article on the WSJ that said only 941 people naturalized in the year 2000. (In comparison, close to 15,000 people naturalized in Japan that year. Do you know where official stats for PRC naturalization are published? (where the author got that 941 in Y2K figure)

Thanks, but I'm perfectly capable of looking at Wikipedia myself. I was hoping for a more authorative source. Re your rant on Japan, a lot of debt is never good, but what a lot of overseas sources forget is that Japan's debt is unique in that it's almost entirely internal domestic debt. That's very different from other countries, and you can deal with domestic debt very differently from debt owed to other countries. As for PRC's true financial status... Nobody knows. Most sources believe that the majority of PRC's claims re it's balance and debt are completely fabricated and bogus. Thanks for the other info though!

From what I read over here in Asia, seems like Japanese business are affected whenever this kind of 'problems' crop up. Have not heard of Japanese living in China having issues with locals. Perhaps someone from PRC can comment? Kinda like Vietnamese locals doing the same thing to Chinese businesses located in Vietnam when 'issues' with islands, fishing etc crop up as reported in local papers.

I'm with you on this. Why would I want to become a citizen with an inferior passport, having to shell out tons of money for visas and etc. What's the point of being a citizen of country where it's citizens will NEVER recognize you as one of their own. It's the same for Japan, and most Asian countries. Maybe it's a different case for citizens for countries other than America, but I'd rather keep my American citizenship and ALL of its benefits. When I was rather obsessed with Japan, I was disheartened when I found out that even if you become "Japanese", you'll never be Japanese anyways. In Asia, or in countries that are rather homogeneous, there's no point. If you're a different color other than what the population is, you'll be what I call the forever-foreigner. I've made my peace with it at this point, and I'm tired of being sad about it. I'd rather just relish in my so-called white privilege and foreigner privilege. I by no means think I superior to any other race or ethnicity, but if you want put me or other white foreigners on a pedestal, and you're not willing to recognize me as one you, why bother putting effort into changing that mindset. After all, as Matthew said, it's not only a national identity, but a ethnic or racial identity as well. However, being a citizen in Taiwan or Japan is far superior to China, where apparently you get nothing for being a citizen. I would say at least you get the right to vote, but this China, so that means nothing as well. Rant over. Another great video Matthew! Vivi did well filming as well. When is she going to put more videos out on her channel?

But he got green card actually not because he married with a local , because he speak mandarin very fluently and have a successful career. If you focus on some Chinese tv ,you will find A LOT OF foreigner got green card because they speak very fluently mandarin. Like DaShan(from Canada),runei (亚美尼亚)John (from USA )work in xinhangdao English school. The reason is they really love china , they would like respect this country instead of complaining how different china with other countries. Of course different situation and different history (westerners invaded china in the last 200 hundreds years) and 1.4 population in china even had population control programs in the last 40 years. China have no enough resources for 3000 years even right now still bought a lot resources from Africa. If you really love a country, respect the difference, and work hard for your goal . You will get the green card finally.

But still...IDK how to go about doing this. Most of the foreigners in China work illegally for English teaching, they only have travel visa! It's hard for foreigners to find software engineer jobs in China since few IT companies want to take risks to hire people who don't have stable and legal working status, Chinese language skill is also important but not to be required by English teaching, the process to hire foreigners is very complicated!

Bob King is wrong about your prospects as a software engineer in China, at least in Shenzhen. Truth is: it depends how good you are and how well you can make your other skills compliment it. Now there will be a lot of companies that won't take the risk of hiring a foreigner but you have a few things going in your favour: 1: Many tech companies in China want to collaborate with foreign partners, so getting an employee who has a technical skill and can combine that with fluency in both Chinese and English is like a dream come true for them. 2: If you look at the pages for employers on Chinese recruitment websites it will look like there's a surplus of software engineers in China, but only 0.1% of them can write a "Hello World" program in any language. There are companies in Shenzhen where they employ 20 or more people just to search for more software engineers who have a clue what they'd be doing because they can never find enough.

The problem with too strict requirements for work visas is often there's a difference between what a given country's skill shortages are on paper and what employers can't find enough of. What I was doing in China was something that on paper they have enough of their own people for, but in practice I was teaching a lot of people who were supposed to already know it (which the HR girl had to explain to the immigration officer every time I renewed my visa)
