차 성 나리 비라사 well, I'd only heard of the term "weeaboo", which is basically a westerner obsesses with Japanese culture. So I think a Koreaboo is the same, but with Korean culture. Maybe it doesn't even have to be a westerner, not too sure actually 💁
@rvyna48279 жыл бұрын
차 성 나리 비라사 a koreaboo is a non-Korean who fetishizes Korean culture and the people. and to get one thing clear, being interested in kpop or kdramas does not make them a koreaboo its when you start fetishizing the people and the culture Typically, they are the people who want to move to Korea with the main reason being bc of kpop and kdramas -- and my favorite part 😑- to find a "Handsome Korean husband" who looks like their Oppar. They like to go "I'm totally Korean on the inside even tho I'm [insert other race here]." They love to write their name in Hangul on their SNS or give themselves a "Korean name". They are also the people who commit yellow face which is some how "doing your make-up like a Korean" which ends up looking similar to an ulzang. And Let's not forget my favorite! Koreaboos just love to use random Korean words they pick up off Korean dramas and kpop to their koreaboo friends or any Korean person in their life, feeling like some know-it-all. The list can go on. If you have any more questions you can just google it. I also know of this one site called thisisnotkorea.tumblr.com/FAQ
@rvyna48279 жыл бұрын
No problem:) but also keep in mind that even though you are Asian you can still be a koreaboo. Frankly, the only person that can't be a Koreaboo is someone who has Korean in their blood. Korean people have so many different looks and skin tones and eye shapes that you can't just say there is this universal Korean look or that you can look it from afar. Just remember that being Korean is not an identity you can just assume through makeup or clothing or anything like that. Its not a product that you can buy off a shelf. And the same goes for any other ethnicity. An ethnicity is more than a look. Its complete with their culture too and that's not something you learn. When you think about it, its kind of insulting for someone to say they can assume the "look" of your ethnicity but will never understand or get the culture and history, or the struggles that comes with it.

It's not a romantic term unless it's in a romantic situation but most of the time it's just a normal term! If it was always meant to be romantic, I better be worried! Because so many girls calling my husband oppa! haha. I'd sure have some competition. Many times we walk on the street girls come up to him, "Oppaaa!" Man I'd be stressing a lot if 'oppa' was the used the way some K-drama fans think it's always used. I'd be concerned about his younger sister calling him oppa too!.... that's be awkward.

I have a friend at University who is from South Korea but she is a little bit older, maybe early 30s she won't tell me haha, and I actually did the opposite of what you were talking about. I hid the fact that I liked kdramas and kpop and knew a couple of words/phrases. I guess I was afraid of her thinking I was weird or like I was one of those people you were talking about. Anywho long story short she was excited when she found out, my other friend told her lol she didn't know I was hiding it but it worked out for the best. She's taken me under her wing and she was the first one to bring up me calling her eonni. At first I was shy but I warmed up to it. She started helping me learn Korean and told me she was going to buy me a Korean Bible I'm like seriously touched by her generosity I feel dumb for hiding it before.

Because what kpop and kdrama does is opens a door to get to know their country and culture, after that you may realize if do really like them or is just because of kdramas o kpop.

@intheraeyne8 жыл бұрын
To be fair, anime and dramas do a pretty bad job of introducing you to cultures, lol. Every little thing is made into such a big deal and it creates so many misconceptions. In the case of senpai and oppa, anime and dramas respectively kind of make the main love interest allow the other character to use it in an endearing way and make it into a big deal, so I can see why people could get confused or "deceived." So I guess people should just be advised in the fact that media from a country =/= accurate portrayal of culture. Like, sure, you can pick some things up... but otherwise, not that reliable. Seems like it would be common sense, but it isn't xP. Though seeing as English doesn't really have honorifics like those, people might also go crazy for it because it's something unique... yeah.

For kpop idols it is a little different though .. because it would be so awkward for fans to always call their idol as their full name .. Korean fans will never call the kpop idol by their first name (since it's rude since they aren't friends) so they will say their full name. But always saying the full name makes the fans feel far from the idols. So the idols welcome the fans to use oppa as a means to make them feel closer .. example 승윤오빠 vs 강승윤. . . For fans it's okay to call them oppa but that is pretty much the only circumstance you can call someone oppa or unni without actually knowing them. It is still kind of weird to post something in English using oppa tho ...

The total opposite happened to me when I was living in China. I was having dinner with a Chinese girl friend and a Korean girl friend of hers that had just met. We were talking in Chinese and then out of nowhere the Korean girl calls me "gege" (哥哥), which means older brother, and me face just turned red and I didn't know what to say. haha Then my friend had to tell her that in Chinese you just call a guy friend "gege" if you're really close and it's considered to be cute, otherwise you have other words to call older guys that you're not close to. I was blushing hard xD
@BlahBlahYap9 жыл бұрын
Education is definitely the key here. Most people don't understand what these terms means so they use them wrong. Calling a guy younger than you "oppa" is like calling him "mister" or "uncle". It's great that people are interested in other cultures, but it's better to learn from a source more reliable than the entertainment industry.
@XxXLindzayXxX9 жыл бұрын
It always makes me so uncomfortable whenever people throw around the word 오빠, especially when watching shows like ASC (international fans talking to idols basically) and they'll be all "thank you oppa!" i don't know if it's just me but i never use the word oppa if i can avoid it. There was a Korean boy that transferred to my school after moving here from Korea and my school is over 92% white so he basically grouped himself with his 2 siblings and the one other Korean girl in the school. I ended up befriending him because we coincidentally shared the same seat in the chemistry class, but had different hours, and he had written something in Korean on the desk and from there I responded and we wrote back and forth for a week before we exchanged KKT ID's and became friends since. I had thought he was the same age as me for some reason so when I wrote to him it was always informal and even when I accidentally used formal language once he corrected me and told me not to use formal language. Maybe it's the fact that I'm the only foreigner he's ever met who speaks Korean, but he's not entitled at all to being older despite the 2 year age difference. I've never even thought about referring to him as Oppa and we've always just called each other by our first names bc it's simpler that way. I guess what I'm saying is, if you're a foreigner making friends with older Korean guys, I wouldn't jump straight to calling them Oppa. And I don't think they'd hold you to it either unless they're very entitled. Also, ChoNunMigookSaram , is there some sort of difference when it comes to referring to Idols as "Oppa"? Same as before, I've always felt uncomfortable seeing people use the term with idols but it seems like the situation is different, though I'm not Korean or have been to Korea so I wouldn't know. I always use -ssi when referring to older idols though I'm not sure if that's appropriate.
@illliwiliwf9 жыл бұрын
I think it's widely accepted to call idols oppa. Calling them -ssi sounds too formal. It'd be like saying Mr. Justin Bieber

And well I did have a choice but because of being nervous I followed the scrips and said exactly what the scrips told me to say, but now you know the reason why international fans on asc say oppa to boy groups :'> although, in different situations, not asc related, I totally get the feeling of being uncomfortable with calling idols oppa :/ when I just came into kpop I too threw the word oppa and eonni around, but now.... I totally agree that people shouldn't slip the word 오빠 into conversations when you're speaking english. Another thing I've noticed, I speak Korean and I've made Korean friends, both guys and girls, and they usually let you know what they want you to call them. Sometimes it also changes depending what langauge you are speaking in, if we are speaking in English they want me to call them by their english name, if we're speaking in Korean they usually just want me to call them 언니 or 오빠 because it's more comfortable when speaking in Korean. I'm really glad you posted this video, because it does frustrate me when I see people misusing Korean words because they think it's cute or entertaining.

OMG MEGAN thank you so much for making this video! Most of my korean male friends (here in Seoul) have been in a similar situation where people who visit korea randomly come up to them in bars and start calling them Oppa even though they don't know them and they don't speak English. I'm so glad that you talked about it so openly! I think it's a pretty important message to get out there :) Korea is not like one of the dramas and the guys here are also just normal guys :) They all appreciate others being interested in their culture and their language but but there need to be some lines of respect too :)

definitely agree with this full heartedly. It is just like when my friends get excited going to some japanese convention of sorts or a japanese restaurant and they'll just shout out random japanese phrases. I don't mind their enthusiasm, but they don't even know the language so it just indexes a bit of an awkward feeling. Same thing when I see girls in my university go up to Korean boys and be like 오빠, without knowing anything about the language or basic knowledge of the culture. Again the enthusiasm is great, but they should take a deeper look into it. Thanks for the video.

Eh, I don't entirely agree with this statement. It depends on the person. My school receives many Korean exchange students and most of them seemed to enjoy foreigners calling them "oppa" or using kpop/k drama references. They took it as a compliment to how welcoming and interested we were in their culture. There was this cute Korean guy in our class in fact, that loved all the attention he was getting from the girls and reveled in his "oppa" status. He even dated my friend that was 2 years older than him and she called him "oppa" all the time.

+wertbin if korean man let u call him oppa, he has kind of good feeling for u or maybe a player( if every girl around him call him oppa..uh..uh..). and yes sometimes older girl friend calls to her bf oppa in this case it means "hoeny.. baby.. or darling.."

+wertbin but...but kpop/k drama are not actually... culture. Maybe it shows a little part of it, but is a small part. Kpop are just pop songs in korean, and kdramas are just tv shows. (I don't say they are bad or somenthing, I also love them xD) but culture is more than that, language, clothing, food, uhm... ways to behave (I dont remember the word in english, sorry) and everything else Megan explains in her videos is/are culture. - Sorry for bad english. c:

[not Korean] I've actually had two encounters where the whole oppa/noona/unnie situation came up. The first time, I brought it up to this Korean man (about twice my age) who I often saw due to his business (me being a customer). I asked him one day if I should call him oppa or ahjussi and he just laughed, looking a bit embarrassed, and said "I'm married, I have kids and I'm much older than you so I would be your ahjussi". I never called him ahjussi (mainly because I felt awkward just suddenly throwing the word around). The other time was at my university. There was this female Korean student who struggled with English and I wanted to help her out. So after class I introduced myself, she introduced herself, and that's how I found out that she was Korean. I let her know that I knew a bit about South Korea, due to K-pop and Korean dramas. She immediately smiled at me and asked me how old I was. I told her my age and she excitedly said 'oooh, I'm your unnie!' so from then on I called her my unnie. It was odd for me (because I worried about my pronunciation) but since it made her happy I used it. It's not about NOT using Korean words if you don't speak Korean but knowing when to use it. It depends on the person.

I love how you are so honest about the different topics you tackle on your channel! And people shouldn't take Korean culture from kpop videos and kdramas. they are definitely not accurate representations of Korea. That's like trying to get an accurate representation of America through sitcoms. lol

I love that you have explained this!!! People that watch K-dramas have the terminology all wrong. LOL My sons call their older sister Noona. My husband is called Oppa by his little sister. I get called Unnie by the younger friends. If they are going to use it then make sure you know how to use the word and the context it is used. Its all about the generation that person is in relation to you. :)

Protip: If you're super interested in learning Korean and you are just DYING for someone to call Oppa, join a language exchange website/program. There are tons of people looking to learn more about your culture/language and they're probably living very close to you too! You can always make a friend that is struggling to learn your language (english for example) just like you may be struggling to learn Korean! In my personal experience, it's a good way to meet people who have been to Korea on equal footing (even if they're older than you haha). I do suggest that you try to talk about things that aren't only K-pop/K-drama related. Honestly, if you think about how popular the popstars in your country are to you, it might be a safe bet to assume that Korean idols carry the same amount of weight to a stranger from Korea until proven otherwise. :) Happy Learning all! and TY Megan for another amazing video! :D

THANK YOU for posting this video! I literally had this same conversation with a few of my friends a few days ago. Generally the only time I use "오빠" is with someone who I've known for a while and speak to primarily in Korean... and usually at some point I ask how they prefer to be addressed anyway, in the same way I eventually ask if they prefer I continue to speak in 존댓말 or 반말 just to stay on the safe side (one of my older guy friends actually used to laugh at me for speaking so formally with him). But girls who start calling guys 오빠 when either they aren't close to him or mainly speak in English is a bit weird.

Would you just call an older guy in a work setting sunbae? Is that a unisex word? I never know. Also, when someone is older than you, but you've been working at that place a lot longer, who is the sunbae in that situation? Also also, fun fact, "opa", in German, means Grandpa.
@eushun9 жыл бұрын
unFayemous sunbae means the person that has more experiences than you at some workplace, school, college, etc. so basically it does not mean that order person actually.. so Senior can be similar word with sunbae, and sunbae is unisex word
@unFayemous9 жыл бұрын
구본효 ah, OK, thanks! So if you're sort of starting at the same time, with a person who us older than you (so, they're not your senior at work and you're on the same level, e.g. both work in accounting), is there a specific term for that or do you just use formal language without a term? Sorry, the system sometimes confuses me, we have a polite form but it's much more tied to age than anything else 😅
@eushun9 жыл бұрын
unFayemous if the his or her age is less than 40 year old on the same level, than you can comfortantly use the term oppa or unee but it is in case of closed person, if they are not close to you, than you can use ~~ssi at the end of their name, for example, Minkyung ssi, ssi means polite form to call someone's name
@JourneyWithAjah9 жыл бұрын
To my understanding, sunbae just means they have been there longer than you, so they aren't necessarily older than you. In a work setting you usually use 씨 which sounds kind of like "she". It means like Mr. or Miss.

Wish I saw this video literally 5 minutes ago when I asked a friend from Korea how should I call him because I didn't want to sound rude by calling him by his name (because he's much older than me) and I'm trying to learn Korean.. but so far we comunicate mainly in english.. We been talking for a while so a felt a lil more comfortable asking him that and he said he preferred I call him 오빠... Now I feel so stupid and rude.. I dont even call idols or guys I general "oppa" just because of some fantasy girls have with Korean guys.. Ugh.. all want is to learn the language and be able to comunicate with native speakers in the most respectable way :( (English is not my native language so sorry for the mistakes)

It is also racist when they say it to a person for the sole fact that they are Korean. It is like really? Thank you Megan for talking about this subject. All of my friends who are obsessed kpop fans always use this term for every single Korean they see. LIKE STOPPP IT'S JUST A WORD!! The furthest I ever gone with the word oppa is my older brother , that's it. I don't even use that word to my older male friends who are Korean too, because they would probably think why am I suddenly using the word oppa 😅😐 So to all the Korean die-hard fans stop obsessing over every little things. And remember it's just a word!! Don't overuse the term oppa 😬

k-dramas and k-pop are only one small section of the culture. Not everyone LOVES these things. Regular Koreans see it as what we see our U.S. pop-culture. This week in South Africa I was called "Katy Perry" JUST because I was born in the California.... lets just say I'm not a big fan of hers :p
@eunicer41079 жыл бұрын
Omg that was total real talk girl! I agree with you 100%. Some people go a little crazy with Asians and think that it's ok to call them oppa/unnie just because or start talking about how much they love kpop. They don't understand that they are stereotyping and perhaps the person doesn't want to be called oppa/unnie by a stranger and maybe they don't like kpop. Buzzfeed has done videos on like "what if Asians said what White people say" along with other cultures and they are real eye openers. Your video also sheds light on this subject and I hope that others heed your warning. I'm not Korean but have a friend from Korea who calls me "Nuna". It was he who started calling me that since I am older so I'm ok with it.
