Wondering if adding a little cornflour to the putty would mean it becomes a bit firmer/drier and doesn't just squash so easily when you use it?

Had a zafira with overspray everywhere 10 years ago. T-cut and cutting paste didn't touch it. In desperation I googled it and clay bar was the answer. I bought Built Hammer and the results were amazing. Have used on every car since. You can't polish dirt is my motto.

I always use bilt hamber clay. Always have. I've got loads of Plumbers Mate and that's good for fitting drain roses to sinks and baths. Never really used it for anything else. You know what the next question will be.... Can you use automotive clay for seating a bath rose?

I have used plumber's putty. A trick my uncle who was a car painter taught me to use it only in case I didn't have a clay bar and I have used it. It can help a bit on that emergency situation you need it but never like clay bar and it is a nightmare to work with it since requires more liquid.
@imyourhuckleberry33693 жыл бұрын
Great video! I’ve heard the best use of the plumber’s putty would be spot use on a ceramic coating with stubborn areas. Every other use, use the clay mitt or clay bar. 👍

I will say I have used Plumbers Mait for Plumbing and you are normally cleaning it off your hands 2 days later the sample you were using was quite dry to normal, I would never even try it with a new tub as the oil just makes it impossible to get it dry enough then again you could mix it with plumbers hemp.

Obviously not meant for automotive use, but if you are desperate, you could use it for a small patch. I wonder if you left the lid off to allow it to dry a little, would it solve the stickiness issue.
@billtaglia28653 жыл бұрын
I used automotive clay and tried the plumbers putty. It was as John described. Like chewing gum that sticks to your fingers and paint. I found it to take some simple contaminants off the paint. I’ll probably stick with the automotive clay.

Interesting video! Do you think you can Claybar a ceramic coated car? If so what would you use? Thank you for the video!
@ForensicDetailing3 жыл бұрын
you can but the general rule is if you need to clay, then it means you have contamination that you are going to drag off the car,, this process means you need to polishing away the marring you inflict afterwards which you cant do with a coating really. if your wanting to clay a recently coated car then you are someone that likes pampering your can which means coating is prolly not the best protection choice.
@jasoncraig70963 жыл бұрын
My coated car is exposed to a lot of industrial contamination. The coating has been on there for just over a year but holding up pretty good considering the environment. When it gets to the point that the grit on the coating is noticeable would an extra fine clay remove the coating you think? I am not to worried about marring since it is silver. I guess there is only one way to find out for sure!!
@GazLan3 жыл бұрын
@@jasoncraig7096 you could try using BH Korrosol first to see how much contamination you can remove before attempting claying
@RipJawsX953 жыл бұрын
You can always use a clayless method. Just use Ironx and that should hopefully remove all the industrial contamination you have on your coated car.

I didn't think it would work when I saw the title I not sure as it is a long, long time since I worked with the stuff (I was a plumber many years ago) but is there not Linseed oil in it I can't remember now. it's an excellent sealant used along side "Boss White" but definitely wouldn't recommend using either on your pride and joy.

Tbh I think for overspray you’d need a proper clay etc. But for light contamination on a car I think plumbers mait is fine. Don’t get me wrong, I use proper clay most of the time. But once I did drop my clay bar and didn’t have any left so had to use plumbers mait. Light contam on the car and it got 99% of it off. It was rough to start with and the paint was smooth as afterwards. Minor issue was the flakiness of the plumbers mait. But I was happy to keep re moulding

Might combine hacks ... Toothpaste with Plumber's Mait ;) Some details products do seem a bit dear (I think mostly around brushes Bog Brush = Wheel Arch, bottle brush = Exhaust, Potato/veg brush = Tyre brush, Make up blusher brush = interior soft brush) but then I think there is a reason these products evolved, and the substitutes probably just don't have the resistance to chemicals or the right levels of abrasiveness. I'm happy to pay a few extra quid every few years on a something that is worth many thousand's of pounds.

can you do a comparison of clay bar vs clay mitt. (if not done already)
@MarkSegree3 жыл бұрын
You have hard medium and soft clay. Each has a different level of how aggressive it is. Think of a clay mitt as more soft. Its scratches the car less but takes longer to remove contamination. Every thing has its use, a claymitt is just a different tool to help you achieve your desired results.

So I would like to offer you a solid and heartfelt apology for the comments. I did publically reply and apologise, but felt it the right thing to do to remove the comment, then write to you personally. I hope the message finds you through the many hundreds you probably receive and again I'm sorry for the tone of the comment I posted in the early hours of Monday morning. Wishing you well.
