Omg Emmy, in Mexico they have something similar but it’s called “hot rocks soup”. They basically put hot rocks inside a bowl with veggies, herbs (sometimes with meat), and water to make a broth. Point is, the rocks are meant to cook whatever you decide to put in the bowl. It’s interesting... **correction, stone soup*

As someone who has regularly cooked with rocks when camping, I hope she chose the right type of rocks. The wrong type of rock, even if fully dried out, can explode when they get hot. Instead of using all that aluminum foil, try putting hot rocks in the bottom of a cast iron pot, then the chicken, then more rocks, then a cast iron lid. When the cast iron gets hot it can cook the food faster. I'd like to see Emmy cooking fish over a greased flat hot rock. Or making a soup using hot rocks.

Well...... If you finish the videos The rocks didn't explode when she was heating it up. And foil is a good heat conductor. She might have wanted to show the viewers a different method of cooking. People might have no cast iron pot at their disposal.

People also might not have a fireplace 😢 or the right kind of fireplace. Those fake ones with the gas heater won't work 😪 What are the wrong kind of tocks/how do you tell the difference. Maybe the mess was too big to clean up inside the pan. Also, maybe Emmy was following a receipe as it was written? She often does that in video, although she changes them sometimes.
@meacadwell
@meacadwell 4 жыл бұрын
@@catherinejustcatherine1778 You need to use harder rocks that won't absorb water. Any water in small interior cavities in the rocks will heat up causing those rocks to explode. Exaples of good rocks to use are granite, slate, basalt, ore lava rocks.

WARNING: Make sure you don't use River Rocks directly from outside or near a water source. If there's moisture trapped in the rocks you could have a serious EXPLOSION. To avoid this season your rocks first by putting them in a very low oven for a couple of hours and a couple of days in advance of making this recipe. This allows the moisture trapped inside the rocks to slowly escape.

Emmy, that bird looks so moist and delicious. When I was in Scouting, we would use this technique, but we would brine the bird (trial and error). I wouldn't put it in my backpack either. We used to use a canvas newspaper delivery bag filled with leaves or newspaper for insulation. Everybody would take a turn carrying the bag during a hike. Beats PBJ at end of hike...

Thanks for sharing Emmy! Looked absolutely amazing and how fun to cook with rocks! I know they have archeological sites in Ireland that they found large caldron sizes holes in caves and in cliffs near farmland that had smaller rocks inside. They hypothesized that hunter-gatherers used these “holes” to cook their meals by heating up rocks and putting it inside the chipped out rock with the food to cook it so they could leave it unattended while they hunted, gathered and farmed the land:)! Thanks again for sharing and much love and hugs from Montana! ✨💖✨

We used to do this at guide camp!☘ I haven't thought about it in ages! So easy and fun. For anyone trying to do it in more inclement weather... if outside in colder weather or with bigger bird so it cooks before rocks cool, setting a metal bucket on the fire before and/or using a warmed metal garbage can helps a lot ( bird and rocks in foil in the bucket, large hot rock in garbage can, bucket in can, newspaper all around and above the bucket, lid on. If quite cold out wool blanket overtop of outside of can for some extra insulation) and then we could go off and have chicken ready when we got back from activities! It was a fav, and especially good to come back to hot food after snowshoeing all afternoon at winter camp! (Beef is also excellent done with hot rocks but takes a bit of strategy to get it cooked perfect, but some choice slits in a roast and you are golden!)

Hi Emmy i have a great idear for hardtimes meal! And this has insprired me tonight as im eating this myself!! Its called a crisps butty! In other words in USA It would most likely be called potato chip sandwich! And my personal best crisp/potato chip to use one the sandwich is cheese and onion or smokey bacon! I usally have walkers crisps here in the UK But im sure you have crisps called Lay's Which are just as nice! So my recipe for this is 2 slices of white bread spread with butter or margarine! ( GOTTA HAVE BUTTER OR MARG OTHERWISE TOO DRY) Then choose your flavour crisp e.g. Roast Chicken then smush the bag to make the crisps smaller, Then put on your slice of bread then add the other piece if bread then slice in half then enjoy! Please try this if you can its delicous! And doesnt cost much to make in a budget!! Also of course EAT THE DUCKY MOSS ☺

I had to laugh....my son was in the army a few years back, stationed in Louisiana. When he finally came home, he brought back a new love of creole cooking...along with a container of that very same seasoning. Just a couple of weeks ago, I was re-organizing my spices in the cabinet, and the creole seasoning fell on the floor, opening it just a bit...I inhaled just a small amount and literally coughed for 20 minutes straight!! I thought that because I tend to have chronic bronchitis, this was the reason I reacted so violently to inhaling the seasoning....but after watching you have an almost identical reaction, I realize it's just that the seasoning itself is DANGEROUS!!! Lol. Love LOVE your videos Emmy, you always have something different, interesting and/or off the wall to watch. My husband will always be thankful to you for introducing me to the Hokkaido milk bread. Keep up the wonderful videos. (although I really wish you would think twice about allowing Hello Fresh to sponsor your videos. I have friends who have had HORRIBLE experiences with this company sending expired and/or bad and dangerous food. Another friend in Texas used to work there and she quit because she couldn't believe how carelessly HF regularly handled food. They do not seem to care about simple sanitation, and one of these days, someone is going to sue them after getting very, very sick. I just don't want to see you involved in any way with a company as shady as this.There is a reason they offer such a large discount. Also...realize that YT influencers NEVER get bad or expired food...only people that actually pay for it. God bless and have a great day.

The cayenne pepper in the seasoning is so light that it becomes airborne when you shake the bottle vigorously . The best way to use Tony's is to pour some into a small bowl and sprinkle it on with your hands or a spoon. That will keep it from becoming the powered equivalent of pepper spray.

In the Peruvian Andes there's a really famous food called "pachamanca". It is seasoned chicken, beef and pork with seasoned vegetables, and different kind of potatoes, cooked in the ground with hot rocks, in a hole that has been previously dug. The food is protected with leafs so the heat won't leave and the food stays juicy and flavourful. Because it is a lot of hard work, usually is made in large quantities.

If you put some rosemary stems under the chicken skin, the whole bird is flavored. Emmy, have you ever cooked potatoes and/or corn in your fireplace? My parents used to do this. You are supposed to have a decent amount of coals, then pierce your potatoes and wrap in foil and snug them in among the coals (you don't want fire directly over them as they will burn. Leave about 4-5 hours. The corn you slather with seasoning and some butter, and also wrap in foil (you can remove silk and leave the husk if you want, or just remove it. If you don't leave the husk on, wrap in about 3 layers of foil. The corn takes less time to cook, I think it's more like 20-30 minutes. You could really go to town by foil wrapping some precooked sausages, that just need to be heated through and leaving them for about 30 minutes, and have a whole meal. Of course, don't forget the s'mores!

You make such cool videos Emmy! I was thinking why not use your cast iron Dutch oven instead of all that tin foil? It retains heat better and would likely cook faster? When I saw your fire place insert I thought of an idea for another video; power outage fireplace cooking! You could use your Cast iron Dutch oven and pie irons. Although, I really recommend the longer $10 cast iron pie irons they sell at Menards; sometimes you can even get them for free after rebate. Do you have Menards on the East coast? You can make coffee too in an enamel coffee pot on a grate. 2nd video idea: You could make a caveman steak where you cook a steak on the coals or on a turned over log with coals on one side! 🔥🔥🔥

Here in New Zealand, my people (the indigenous people of New Zealand, called Maori) have something slightly similar to this, they would dig a hole in the ground and heat up rocks on the bottom of the pit. They’d wrap meat and vegetable in leaves then put more hot rocks on the top and bury it and leave it for hours til cooked. It’s called a hāngi and is a traditional way of cooking still used today, but mainly for special events. :) It’s very delicious.

This is super intriguing. I am wondering how people in past times would’ve been able to move the rocks around to position them around and inside the bird. I’m sure they had tools but I could see it being a little dangerous. I’m glad it worked out well for you!

Hearing her be surprised the chicken wasn’t so spicy with the amount of seasoning she applied really made me stop and think about the culinary differences between cultures and how different ethnic groups approach spices and seasoning in general. It’s really interesting to think about how some people could grow up with a culinary comfort zone consisting only of salt and pepper, while others have no limits as to how much flavor they experience. I grew up in a house where the chicken she made is still just barely under seasoned, although we did try not to overdo the salt. Coming from that, I think as a kid I had a lot more knowledge than most about flavor profiles, lol, but also it helped me learn the line between flavorful and excessive, and I think most people get too scared to overdo it before they can learn that.

Many of the Indigenous Peoples of California used hot rocks to cook inside their baskets. They would put their acorn mash, or other things in the basket, then add hot rocks, and it would cook the food. I find it amazing that one could cook in a basket-how tightly was that basket woven?! I also wondered why you didn’t use the dutch oven to cook the chicken with the rocks?

I think adding still hot potatoes (the starch-rich ones) and some vegetables (onions, garlic, small cutted carottes etc.) would give such a delicious sauce and aroma.

Pacific Islanders have been doing this for years! We wrap the meat and other dishes in leaves (some now may use aluminium foil) and place it underground with rocks underneath and on top to create an oven effect ! ☺️

Jean Auel wrote a books series called, "Clan of the Cave Bear" or "Earth's Children Series". The main character is a primitive woman and in the book, lots of cooking methods were mentioned. (Such as boiling water in the stomach or bladder of an animal?) Would you mind doing more videos about primitive ways of cooking things? If, say, the zombie apocalypse were to ever happen - how would one boil water if they have no pot? How does one make food that lasts longer than a day or so, for traveling or winter? Please and thank you!

In Samoa we actually do have a process of cooking food called using hot sea rocks. It’s called the umu. It’s a a primitive and traditional way of cooking and I always miss it. Great video as usual Emmy. Hope all is well and Happy Valentine’s Day.

When I visited Ecuador, this was a common practice among rural farming families. The kids would dig a hole and light a fire in it, place a chicken and potatoes above the fire, then pile rocks over top. Once it got to a certain point, they collapsed the rocks on top of the fire and then let it smolder and go out. Then they would dog out the chicken and potatoes and have a meal. This way they can cook while still being out tending to their crops and flocks.

I did a course in primitive survival some years ago. We did something similar for roasting meets and cooking soups. We filled a birch bark bucket with water and tossed in rocks from the edge of the fire (some did break), added fish and some spices from the woods. quite tasty. We also kept it going for a while by adding new rocks. Had to be careful not to rupture the bucket.

The last time I heard of using hot rocks to cook, they were used to heat the water to cook a stew. I believe some "native" and ancient peoples would use a (clean) hole in rock or stone, with a stone bottom, or a ceramic cooking pot, something you can't beat directly over a fire. I think it's still used in survival courses. (Obviously, you can fish out the stonesstones to re heat them, if needed). The late sci-fi auther Anne McCaffrey used that version in one of her novels. Freedoms Landing, if memory serves. But was it also demonstrated on an episode of the (uk) Channel 4 archeology series Time Team. Very interesting to see a different method. It's surprising how useful heated stones can be.

Hikers and Campers know this as "Backpack Chicken". In the morning. You take the rocks out of the breakfast campfire wrap the chicken up in foil and plenty of layers of newspapers. Place in in a backpack. Carry your chicken with you on day of exploring/hiking. Eat it for a late lunch.

That's a traditional way to cook in Mongolia. They cook directly on them, stuff a stomach with meat and hot stones, and other ways of cooking when you have rocks and a fire but no pot. The channel Artger has a bunch of videos of this method.
