One tip to make a spinning reel cast better is to fill the spool up to the rim. Good braided line will do this where as monofilament has a bad habit of jumping off of the spool. If need be pre fill the spool with heavy monofilament before you add the braid. For example I fill the lower part of the spool with 40 pound monofilament so that a spool of 30 pound braid fills the spool up to the rim. You may have to use trial and error until you get it right but once it is done you will never have to do it again. Once the braid is old just replace the spool of braid. Use an Albright knot to join the two lines. This full reel plus the slick coating on the braided line makes it cast so much better.

Out here in the pacific northwest on the columbia river we use kayaks to run our gear out. I have a cheap inflatable kayak specifically for running a tripple rig out whatever distance I choose. Might not be a bad idea to get on holes you have trouble casting to.

I use the Okuma Avenger # 80. 20 pound braid such as Power Pro will cast the farthest. However 30 pound Power Pro is almost as good yet it is stronger. According to the information on the box 30 pound test braid has the diameter of 17 pound test monofilament. I have tried 50 pound test but it doesn't cast as far. If you watch the surf casters they often use 10 to 15 pound test line with a shock leader. Even the eater sized catfish we take will out pull the fish they catch. I haven't taken any fish over 30 pounds but the 30 pound test Power Pro has handled them all.

The bank casters I know who are casting 100 + yards are using rods that are 11 to 14 feet long. One of the better ones I have ever seen started out as a 12 foot Fenwick blank before it was customized. Next a pool cue stick was glued into the butt. Eyes, reel seat and hand grips were added to make a 14 foot casting rod. They used an Ambassador reel (7000 I think?). The guys who were real good were casting a 5 oz sinker and bait 100 to 125 yards. This was in the days before braided line.

+Terry Dees Nice! I am giving a 12 foot Rippin Lips a try. It was on sale at Cabela's. I am pairing with an Okuma Avenger once one of my local shops gets one in (they ordered 5 to have a stock of them). I need to research what line to use. I will cast past that green bouy!!!!

Is this line counter reel suitable for topwater catfishing? For casting heavier topwater lures: whopper plopper, wake baits etc... I mean for european catfish...?
@TNRVG3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use a linecounter for that unless the bait was being trolled being your boat.

Ive got the low profile 354d. It has casted around 191-200 ft for me. I only use thay reel for catfishing bc i dont do much trolling. The low profile coldwaters cast alot better than the regular cold waters.
@TNRVG5 ай бұрын
I've had them in the past for bumping. Really good reels! It's the line capacity that always worries me. I don't like using braid either because I take clients out on the water on guided trips. Edit: I forgot this was a low profile with braid hah! They do cast better with braid.

Your bank casting rig I use.(Santee rig) But I'll make the sinker line longer then the hook line. It keeps the bait just off the ground in case your bait floats in between a rock . Keeps you out of the snags 🤔

+Badass Sportsman Spinning reels are great for casting small baits to the moon. My 12 foot Longitude with Okuma Avenger can cast 100 yards easy. For big baits you cant beat a big baitcaster.

Here is a different method. Set up some solid rod holders leave the reels on free spool then use your kayak to take the bait and sinker out to the choice spots.

I do that when I plunk for salmon, except I use a rock from the bank with 6lb mono tied to the rock, that way when a big fish bites and you set the hook, you break the 6lb mono and don’t have any weight to worry about. Just you the fish on the other end 👌🏻

Would it be possible to use a spinning reel on downrigging rod?
@TNRVG4 жыл бұрын
I don't know much about using a downrigger. I usually say a spinning is for finesse fishing and baitcasters are for heavier setups. So if you are using it with a lightweight lure it may work?
@davidransom44763 жыл бұрын
A downrigging rod might have the wrong line guides for a spinning reel. On a spinning rod the first few guides near the reel are larger and set out from the rod further.

There is a little knob on side of reel, most bait casters have. If you back that knob off more, BUT....NOT TO MUCH, or parts will fall out , if Knob falls off, Then it should cast better. Its great that at least it can be done, because most of the Time you dont have to cast that far out into most Rivers for Catfish.
