Quick sidenote: Age of Empires 2 no tech/upgrades has been super annoying so far (I got stuck for 5 hours on the final tutorial mission). I still wanna do an Age of Empires run of some kind but any suggestions would be nice.

Unfortunately, economy upgrades are super important for your macro; without it you can't amass trash units. If you go for no upgrade, I'd go for eco /age advancement only-no military (still a pain), or try barracks/stables/archery range units only. Or, trash unit spam, i.e. those units which cost no gold to make.

Indeed, you could limit yourself in an area of upgrades but not all of them since the game is very complex and there are way too many things in the tech tree. No military upgrade, No economy upgrade or only using feudal age techs. Otherwise check the civilization of the campaign and try winning with a composition of their weakest units instead of the typical strongest units

I see people mentioning Red alert 2 already, which is one of my favorite games of all time. But its worth mentioning Mental Omega, a mod for RA2 that just feels right, i don't care if anyone will hate me for this but i think that mod raised a bar on RTS in general because that thing since 2013 (when its 3.0 version released) literally saved my interest in games, nothing else ever clicked for me so much. And a quick resume to what it does is: Complete redesign both in visual and gameplay, single player missions and a full story going along with it. The amount of content can be overwhelming but i asure you, it is WELL DONE, not perfect, but excelent. It FEELS professional, even more considering how much of a pain in the ass is modding that game.

Would be rather simple. Supreme Commander: B Tier. A strong campaign that focuses on various factions persuit of their respective goal leading to the same structure: Black Sun. The amount of weaponary is staggering and the experimental units are amazing, but, the basegame is rather simple and can be incredibly slow and unballanced. Supreme Commander Forged Alliance: S Tier. A new faction and overhaul of the interface. Much has been done on the ballancing side and the Campaign is a nice end to the Infinite War Saga. There is a reason why the Fan Community kept it alife with Forged Alliance Forever. If one takes Community Content into account then This (in addition to WC3) goes to S+ Tier: Phantom Mode, Coop Campaigns, Build Overhaul, Ballance patches, New Units, Fun-Modes, New Factions all made by an incredible community. Supreme Commander 2: C Tier. Would be F if possible. The Game that killed the franchise. The scale has been ruined and the campaign is literal classroom drama. The Research tree ruins multi-faction strategies and the game has been dumbed down a ton because it was meant to be released on consoles. At least it looks pretty.

I started my love of RTS with Supreme Commander and only recently played Forged Alliance. Both are absolutely astounding. The macro and economy is amazing, but the micro (while optional) is extremely rewarding as well.

A bit of a shame you didn't have Red Alert 2 in the lineup, that game was pretty much the peak of the Red Alert series IMO. Another cult classic RTS title to at least check out is Warzone 2100, which has an Open Source remake capable of running on modern computers. Meanwhile, Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are among the RTS games that I enjoyed the least, back in the days I still played RTS. Outside of the totally botched games like Dawn of War 3 and C&C 4, of course. Starcraft and sequels are not a bad game by any means and obviously popular beyond all others in the genre, but something about them never clicked for me.

I would like to make some suggestions on some RTS games. 1. Company of Heroes 1 & 2 - CoH and CoH 2 are made by the same company that made DoW and were made pretty much at the same time. 2. RUSE - don’t know if you’ll be able to get this one as steam pulled it from their library a while ago (those who still bought it back then like me are still able to play it) but it’s a Ubisoft game in WW2. It had a DLC (added Japan) sort of similar to Command and Conquer Generals where your income comes from 1 source but the gameplay revolves more around fog of war aspect and using “Ruse” to deceive your opponent. “Non-traditional” RTS - These games are unlike starcraft/dune/age of empires in the apsect that you don’t manage bases and an economy but still fits into the RTS genre as you’re still commanding units in real time. 1. World in Conflict - First off GREAT story! Made me cry in the middle of the campaign. This game is a “what if WW3 happened” and you play both the American side and Soviet side of the conflict. It also had some really good trailers and cutscenes from the 2000s. 2. Wargame - the base game I believe has a story but it’s expansions campaigns are just set ups for the scenario (what if north korea invaded south korea again, what if the soviets invade sweeden, what if UK didn’t give back Hong Kong to the Chinese in the 90s, etc…) those ones did have alternate endings depending on how well you won or lost.

RTS is definitely fun and enjoyable at times, and I'm glad for your dedication to this lesser appreciated genre of games. C&C:Generals is one of my most beloved games of all time. You weren't boxed in with unit caps, you didn't have finite resources or a mechanism where resources slow down at the mid- to later stages of the game, you didn't drown in micro-commands for every single unit. It was a huge slugfest and so much fun! Starcraft is quite the opposite to that. Never really could get that into it as a result, it felt limiting, slow and finicky. But that's just my experience with it.

As a franchise, C&C is my favorite. I'm even fond of the black sheep that is Renegade, which was actually my first C&C game, funnily enough. C&C is also the longest running RTS franchise with the highest number of titles released, unless you consider Total War as true RTS (for me it's not exactly true RTS because only the battles play in real time). But when it comes to individual games, still nothing beats Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 2 for me either.

My favorite Night elf mission in Warcraft 3 reign of Chaos(which now may only exist pirated) is the last one(for being only moment in the history of warcraft where Orcs, Humans, and Night elves working together) Frozen throne's Human campaign is more of Blood elf campaign cuz in that campaign, dwarves and actual humans are only playable in the 1st mission Before I goes into Warhammer 40k, I'm used to be big fan of Command and Conquer series(before EA ruined this)

Answering the question: yes, I do it all the time. Starcraft just isn't my thing. I like first one because of marine's gun sound and "gogogo" voice line, but outside of that it's not my shtick. Now Warcraft 3 is entirely different thing. It's my childhood game and I stills enjoy it, although sadly I got no friends with good enough skills to be a challenge for me.

I grew up playing Command and Conquer (3 and Kane's Wrath), Red Alert 2, Red Alert 3 and Uprising, and was one of the few people who enjoyed playing Command and Conquer 4. When I tried StarCraft II Wings of Liberty shortly afterwards, I thought it was the best RTS I had ever played. When I tried playing Brood War, the sequel still felt a lot better to play, which would be something the Remaster of Brood War would fix years later. I tried a couple other RTS's afterwards, like Ancient Wars: Sparta and Halo Wars 1, but I still considered StarCraft II the best. However, as years passed and playing StarCraft became harder, tryhardier, and sweatier, it took away from the enjoyment of the game. I have already played the story dozens of times by that point, and there was just nothing new about the game to explore anymore, so I stopped playing it. From then on until now, I still haven't played StarCraft II, I played Brood War which now seems a lot more fun with its slower pacing, went back to Halo Wars 1 (Definitive Edition, a lot more fun than the console version), and look forward to playing Ancient Wars: Sparta again on Steam after all these years. In conclusion, StarCraft II is a damn good RTS game, but it's not the quintessential and definitive RTS game. There are many RTS games out there that are different from StarCraft II and could fit your playstyle better. Some of the examples I provided here make good substitutes to StarCraft and are definitely worth checking out.

Imo a "modern" RTS game can not succeed without a mix of DOW/CoH/W3. Ironically one of starcraft's biggest sin is... how do you propose an alternative? It's so good at what it is doing you're basically reinventing the wheel. Whereas especially DOW (and also CoH) have very interesting mechanics (Kill synchs, Unit attrition beyond just hp, Unit leveling up...) that could get a bigger crowd of players I think, and very strong identity to boot.

You forgot one. The big one. The grandaddy of RTS. Red Alert 2 Yuris Revenge. It's silly but also incredible well made. Perfectly balanced for both multiplayer and singleplayer. Much more unit flexibility than most RTS while really easy to get into. But most importantly, much more fun than a mortal should have. If Star Craft is the big stern hero of the RTS gener then Red Alert 2 is his silly sidekick. While less famous he can easily stand by his side. Qns is way more funny while doing so.

I think the nightelf campagne is made worse by WoW. The final map is literally called Eternities End preseeded by Furion saying - If weve grown so arrogant as to [something something], perhaps we have lived long enough - then using the same power that keeps the nightelves immortal to destroy Archomond is very nice and means everyone can now start over as rought equals in a devestated world. Meanwhile the Lich King sits in his Throzen Throne with a massive undead army to prevent the Burning Legion from returning as much as hes able to defend Azaroth despite everyone hating him.

Y'ever hear of Dark Reign? That game's plot is a bit convoluted (You time travel to witness the war between 2 factions and witness how their final battle will destroy the universe so you're trained in both factions so you can intervene their final battle and save the universe) but the game itself is super fun, weirdly cheesy, and each unit is fantastic and unique, and the best selling point about it is how it's one of the first games (I think it's THE pioneer) to let you queue units and set waypoints. Another fantastic selling point was its ability to customize each unit's AI to make giving them orders less manual, by setting how soon they head to repair and what they should and shouldn't attack, and how far they pursue enemies.

Sure, cause marines don't look like space marines and zerg don't look like tyranids. To be fair the zerg look a lot less stupid than tyranid models, like why do so many have hands wielding bio weapons with ammo hoses running from their own bodies. They lack the cleaner simplicity of creatures like the hydra that is designed to shoot spines using it's entire body.

My first RTS before StarCraft was Age of Empires and Command and Conquer. When I was a kid, I used to love playing a Lego flash game named Crystalien Conflict. It was a game revolving around the Lego Mars Mission line. Recently, when I discovered C&C videos (and your channel), I realized that a lot of its gameplay and mechanics were ripped straight from C&C1. Ever consider doing a challenge run of Crystalien Conflict? Last I checked, it was converted to Ruffle and is still available on the Crystalien Redux site.

If you mod Dawn of War, then oh boy you will be in different world. Mods are made even "today". Also modded AI is pretty good. For a simple start just download "mod manager" and choose what you want.

Glad to see you covered Winter Assault for Dawn of War as the expansion, that cemented my love for the rts genre with WH40K overall, most especially the Guardsmen. Also as a note, I've never played StarCraft or its sequel and still don't see the appeal of it to this day. Not that I think it's trash or bad, I'm just not that curious about it even after seeing footage. The marines look pretty cool though

I'm sad. Very sad. Because of two things - first is that Command & Conquer Generals and it's expansion gets heavily overshadowed by it's brothers, Tiberium saga and Red Alert; Second thing is that ,because of the first thing, Generals and it's expansion aren't rated here. Command & Conquer Generals is one of the first 3D RTS and one of the most beloved RTS's by me with one of the best factions out there, in my opinion (that was ALOT of "one of"s for this sentence). For the GLA!!! And I'm not agreeing with author of this video about Age of Mythology! (+ why theres no Age of Empires at all?! Like, seriosly, it's the one of the importent series of RTS. Unless there will be part 2... then it wold be fine.)

For the China Infrantry General: I like infrantry, I like full-auto infrantry, I like when infrantry can shoot air, MORE STATIC DEFENCE TO THE GOD OF STATIC DEFENCE (upgraded bunkers and gatlings are nice!)!!!, infrantry inside moving БТР go brrrrrrt!!! For Doctor Thrax: 'Noises of chemical/biological warcrimes ,coupled with noises of HIGH AS THRAX toxin rebel intensifies', I sure love purple anthrax!, neat powers with neat SCUD storm! For Prince Cassad: He just allows me to STEAL EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE!!!!!! (I love capturing buildings and vehicles, with the help from Jarmen Kell of cource!)

I have played all the games on the list (except for stonghold i have yet to play it, though for mandaloregaming i love the characterization of the voices), aside from that i would also add halo wars and halo wars 2, because even if the first is fairly simple mechanicly, it has certain charm to it, i dont know what it is, i always go back to play some more and after adding mods is even better, maybe it is that everything looks and feels just like the fps entrances of the fanchise or the fact that it was the last work of ensemble studios. Aside from the fact that is practicly the only classic rts that actually plays good on consoles

I am also a single player gamer too lol. I do love the stronghold series. It's not flawless, yea, but I love it. Granted, haven't played all of em like Crusader Extreme. I played Stronghold 1, Stronghold 2, and Stronghold Crusader. Warcraft 1->3 are great, especially for their times. Hell, War 3 still holds up. Ignoring reforge. I LOVE C&C still. I've played all of them from C&C 1 -> C&C 3 (and C&C Generals). Amusingly, my favorite is actually C&C: Renegade lol. Which is not an RTS, but the online was so unique and great and we've had nothing like it since. Age of Empires 1 and 2 were fun when I played em as a kid. I don't think they are great/hold up, but they are still good. You should check out "Majesty" and "Majesty 2" They are very interesting takes on RTS, of sorts.

A game for you to check out: Battlemore. It’s a really campy RTS I solo made in college that I recently made free on steam. I grew up on StarCraft so there are tons of references and the main campaign is comparable to wings of liberty in terms of gameplay and mechanics. I didn’t really have the resources for AAA cutscenes and polished art and voice acting. But it’s still fun and worth checking out.

Fair enough. The pathfinding's pretty wonky in Dawn of War and C&C. Even Stronghold Crusader gets awkward when you're digging a moat!

Since Blizzard is gone there will never again be a Starcraft. Yes, technically the Activision Blizzard corporation remains and they own the rights to the franchise, but we all know that they're creatively bankrupt. That's why I HOPE that they'll never make another Starcraft. I don't have too much time for writing comments though, because I need to return to a very different RTS - Anno 1800. ;-)

Technically Warcraft could be the father of starcraft rather than sister. Also your missing a few other great series like Supreme commander, DoW 2, Dune, just tossing in a few more games for those who may be curious for more RTS games.

Over the years I've had to ask myself: Do I *really* like RTS games, or do I just like Warcraft and Starcraft? I've played a lot of other RTSes... Halo Wars, Homeworld, Supreme Commander, Command and Conquer Red Alert 3, Grey Goo, Iron Harvest... none of them really *clicked* for me like the crafts, it's weird.

Agreed. It's been difficult for me to get used to RTS games outside of Starcraft and Stronghold Crusader, but at least a few series like Dawn of War managed to keep my interest

I understand why you wanted to do this, but after playing StarCraft II I can tell you that all the coming RTS should really just take on the example of SCII. It's just too good to me. Of course, you might disagree, and I'm still excited for the Age of Mythology Retold. :-3

Was that even a question, about fun without StarCraft? 😮 If we speak solely about fun, then StarCraft isn't high on the list: WarCraft 3, Red Alert and Warhammer 40K have specifically comedic elements. Anyway, if someone asked me to recommend RTS games, I'd probably mention StarCraft as number 5 at best. (WarCraft 3, Stronghold and Warhammer 40K are way more interesting, in my opinion, and the Red Alert series has way too funny campaigns). StarCraft is overhyped, ladies and gentlemen. But at least it keeps the genre afloat.

@@PieisDaBest1 Good, because Earth 2150 kinda plays like warzone 2100 if you ever played that. Also has 3 factions. The original game is pretty good, the stand alone add-on moon project not that good but still interesting and lost souls stand alone add-on is kinda very hard. Haven't beaten lost souls myself as i stopped playing there. Spellforce is kinda long i think and also stopped playing a little at the start of the game but it is a game with a huge potential which i plan to return to someday, also is a hybrid between RTS and rpg. I did play Starcraft 1 with broodwar back in the day, but never got to Starcraft 2 yet. How did you buy it? Anyway i just checked can buy it with paysafecards and what is the difference between digital deluxe and standart on blizzard site.

Stronghold an RTS? I find it funny; I put stronghold 2 in S BECAUSE of the minutia you hated and hated crusader for its lack. But then... I don't see it as a RTS

It has its differences, but you still make a castle (base), gather stone/wood/gold/food (resources), and make an army.

I tried to play it recently and the interface was so frustrating and the unit ai was so obnoxious to deal with. Plus half my city kept burning down despite having manned wells everywhere. I quite and went back to stronghold 1 which is a much cleaner experience.

SC2's quality of life and amount of PvE content makes it hard to enjoy other games. I rarely plah Dawn of War anymore because of how bad the pathfinding is. I barely play Age of Mythology because it lacks a PvE mode like SC2. I love Halo Wars, but there's not even a Covenant campaign...

I can't, no other RTS has the storytelling of SC2 (not talking about quality of the story itself), the variety in missions, or even pathing and the gameplay in general..I like the brutality and style of W40k DoW, but the pathing drives me mad + the gameplay is basically always same, and very repeated, also almost no story. DoW2 is better in the story department (than DoW), but it's very slow and lacks some RTS elements. Really enjoyed Rise of Legends, but it had many flaws as well. Didn't like Supreme Commander much, also not into medieval titles either..Command and Conquer series was most mostly good. Warcraft 3 was great, obviously, but can't play W3 and SC1/2 forever xd So dunno..

It's been hard trying to look for other games outside SC1/SC2. But I found trying out other series to be a nice change of pace. Not sure if any of the new releases like Stormgate or Zerospace are gonna be anywhere close to Starcraft, but I'll still give them a shot when the time comes.
