Why can you almost never see couples holding hands or kissing each other on the streets of China? What if you were dating a Chinese woman or a Chinese man, would you be able to show public affection in China? Although it isn't against the law, it is seriously frowned upon in China, especially if you're a mixed couple! I'll tell you all about it in this video!

Watching your videos often give some insight into my wife's seemingly odd behaviors. Thanks for that. My wife was like this when we're in China. I was so offended when she would act like we weren't together, but I married her anyway. When you talk about the ins and outs of interracial marriage, it resonates with me so much. I can attest that what you said is generally true.

When we travelled through China with my Chinese fiancée (who now has been my wife for 15 years), a few Chinese people that she had never seen told her she was a whore. She was really upset and sad. At that time I couldn't understand either what they said or their mindset, but all you mention in this video is right (although I would have thought the situation had changed). In Beijing subway she wouldn't let me hold her hand or kiss her. And when she told her family, they strongly disagreed our marriage. As always, your videos are 200% true and accurate, and after 15 years of common life with a Chinese person I still learn from them. Thank you for such an awesome job !

You nailed it again. It’s culture traditional mind set. Affection, loving, kissing, hugging is behind close door. It’s already gradually changed, relaxing a bit according all the Cdramas are showing. I am even shocked, really? The scenes in dramas showing in public just like western world.

Another quick tip: When you are in a relationship with a Chinese girl and things are getting serious to where you are contemplating marriage, after the engagement is not the time to be introduced to the parents. You should go to meet the entire family during Chinese New Year, stay in their town for the holiday (bring gifts for the parents and others) and show the parents you are respectful and have good intentions. You must win them over! If you can't, move on and try again.

I also feel like showing affection in public is wrong just because of how I grew up, but at least here in Beijing you see younger people, maybe below 25, while kissing and holding hands in public more and more. Maybe not the same as in the west, in Germany I felt like seeing it everywhere. Don't underestimate the speed of change in China.

As I watch your videos more I realize how close China is to Japan, I'm a brazilian of belgian descent and I'm currently living in Japan and a lot of what you said in your video could be applied to here as well, I guess it's the influence of those confucian values that were imported to Japan from China a long time ago, but relationships (especially marriages) between foreigners and japanese are also frowned upon here, the whole left-over women is also something in Japan (they call these women christmas cake here), although because of the more relaxed economic situation due to being a first world country and being more heavily influenced by western culture (especially american) Japan seems to be in a more relaxed situation where these social dogmas, despite still existing, are not so big anymore as they were in the past. Because of that I don't think it's fair to blame this entire situation on the lost generation. Japan and China have a lot of common cultural concepts regarding love and relationship, however China seems to be living in the Japan of the 1970s/1980s when it comes to those issues.

A value system not too far removed from what you might find in 18th century England. It was a woman's primary task when younger to marry and marry well. Lest she become a spinster (left over woman) and a "burden" to her family. Oh ya. I have read Jane Austen. I admit it.

Great video Winston :) I agree with you about kissing and holding hands but I must say (as I'm a foreigner living in China too) we can't say that it is everywhere like that in this country. Each province, even city is a little bit different from another if not more. I've been to many cities around China and in some of those cities I've met very unfriendly people where even my wife has felt very uncomfortable and she is Chinese. We couldn't even hold our hands because people gave us nasty look. However there are cities where Chinese & Foreigner couples are something normal to see. They kiss in public and hold their hands like Chinese couples ( I do it often with my wife) and people around don't really care or at least don't want to. I live in Nanjing and people here are not that traditional as in other cities. Don't get me wrong, they still are but seeing a Chinese woman with a foreigner boyfriend/husband it is something normal here. You should visit Nanjing someday :) All the best and stay awesome :)

I love people who are like you. Just authentic, no holds barred honesty and authenticity, which is probably why you feel at home in china. Too many people think in extremes. CHINA IS GOOD vs CHINA IS BAD. I love that what you do shows that china is first of all a place like everywhere else, including a lot of awesome stuff and a lot of terrible shit. I also love that you can both see negative aspects of cultural behaviour and some strenghts others have without drifting into racism or worship. I often have the impression that for people who already are from two cultures its easier to see these things neutrally, even intelligent friends of mine will often have opinions clearly clouded by some form of patriotism or chauvinism that they have simply because they have only experienced one point of view. Kind of off topic here, sorry for that, but after watching something like 8 hours of your videos within a short timeframe i had to express how impressed i am. Keep inspiring people to be less scared and more open to the world, i firmly believe we need this kind of thing now more than ever.

Everything you said is right on - I've also been in China for about 7 years now, and got married here. Though I have to say, personally I'm also not really a 'public display of affection' type of guy, so it suits me just fine. However : Yes, my wife also had this thing about not wanting to make it obvious out in the city that we're together, which at times kinda pissed me off a little, but I found ways to deal with that by anticipating it beforehand and act accordingly by myself. That has diminished by this time, now she doesn't really care much. Guess it's tough on them as you said, and they also need to work it out for themselves and get used to it.

This video is very true. My wife, when were dating, was the exception. She told me the reasons why we were getting so many looks, it was 2005. I was also lucky that my parents in law saw that I was a good man and would always be looking out for their daughter so they were really accepting. At the same time, many male friends were in love with their Chinese girlfriends and the girlfriends were basically forced to end the relationships because of their parents.

As for meeting the parents, Chinese has a POV on this. Children do not a bring a boyfriend or girlfriend home unless you are serious about the relationship (possible marriage). Thus that is why during Chinese New Year, a lot of pressure was given to children to bring someone home in China. Another reason is that if your family liked your current boyfriend or girlfriend however you decided to break up, the process becomes infinitely more difficult because it's possible that your own family will take their side.

Seems that my experience is different. I had a couple of long term relationships in Guangzhou & Hong Kong with Chinese women. Never had a problem with holding hands and never saw any negative responses from people around us. That said, kissing in public, except for the occasional light kiss on the cheek, just didn't happen. However, I don't remember seeing Chinese couples, except for young college kids, holding hands at all. I guess the women I dated were more independent and were approaching middle age. However, never had anything but positive interactions with their friends. Never experienced anything negative over general, not extended, displays of basic affection.

I'm a Chinese Hongkonger in my 50's but I always hold my wife's hand when we walk down the streets, sometimes with my 18-year-old daughter. There won't be any problem in Hong Kong if a couple kiss or hold hands in public no matter the couple is foreigners or not. But I do agree it's comparatively rarer with older Chinese couples holding hands in the public. Traditionally, old Chinese couples tend not to behave intimately in the public or before their children.

That's mostly true! I was born and grew up in Guangzhou and i'm a college student. Couples holding hands are very normal, but kissing, it depends, light kiss, yes, becaues a light kiss or holding hands doesn't show much affection. But generally, Asian, young and old, stay distant from each other which is very different from what I see here in France. I heard that in Northen Europe the public display of affection is not a thing neither.. don't know if it's true.

Being a "left-over" is not necessarily a stigma. That depends on your circle and social connection. Some of my female coworkers are still single at 30ties, they are capable and workaholic. That's the reason they have not got married. Financial independence is more important for the younger females. Depending on men, that's stigma.

Luckily, not only was my wife was divorced and in her late 30's when we were married, she also worked in Vladivostok when she was younger. There she was impressed by the fact that Russians had no problem showing their affections in public, so unlike her Chinese husband who she likened to being like a dead fish. So when we were married, she had already been westernized and was completely comfortable with openly showing our love for each other.

I met my Chinese wife via online dating website October 2014. She is of the older generation you speak of in video. I can verify that what you have said is true, at least through my personal experiences. I traveled to Anshan 3 different times to visit with her as my fiancé before she moved to America where we were married. While in China I made the decision to show respect for the culture and not make waves. The Chinese people were very friendly and at times very gracious. Meeting my wife's parents, siblings and other family members was a pleasure with no downside. Truth be told, because of my approach to working with the culture and using it to my advantage, I was treated like a Rock Star. I look forward to my next trip to China. I can't believe that, It's like you're talking about Egypt. we have the same exact things you mentioned about china : when a woman reaches the age of around 30 they start to be called leftover women , same rude remarks and dirty looks and even worse in Egypt is that you can't even date a woman, you should go straight to her home asking her parents to marry her without knowing her at all and that's the reason why I'm still single at the age of 22, but to be honest most men in Egypt are kind of playboys and that's why women are usually afraid to be with men I think I'm going to learn other language than Chinese because It's hard for me to leave my country to live in another similar country thank you Winston verrrrrrry much for enlightening me, you're one of my best youtubers

Wow! Marry a guy who can provide for his wife? How radical! Strange that now here in the United States that almost no longer applies. Finding a rich guy is usually for the ultimate plan of divorcing him for the alimony and child support. .. example.. I told a young woman that I noticed unaccompanied old ladies at the Cadillac dealership getting their cars serviced. The girl said they probably went alone to get a better price from the mechanic. I said "No.." I asked her how an old woman could afford a Cadillac. She said "Alimony?" I said.. "No.. they're alone because their husbands have died and in a Cadillac because their husbands were successful and left them with income from wise investments".

My experience is different. I am 52, my girlfriend is 51. She is from Jiangxi and we have been together for 5 years now. We have held hands from the start when we walk on the street, and even in her little home town that is filled with old people holding hands or giving a quick kiss in public has never been a problem. So certainly there are people that dont do it, but pending on your relationship, it is possible to do. Of course heavy making out or such in public is frowned upon.

Guys I tell you, dating a chinese girl is way different than dating a western girl. I'm still not used to it and I don't know if it is the right thing for me. She is very demanding and her parents push her to get kids... We had so many fights about financial stuff, stuff you would never argue with a western girl. I guess it is much better to get an american asian girl friend who grew up in the western world.

Manuel, me & my Chinese girlfriend were hesitant because both countries do get scammed. One of the first barriers we broke through was neither one of us asked for money or gifts. Next we told of our entire past ( good & bad ). We were both married 2 times & had children. However, I have never experienced love more grand than with this amazing lady. Mutual respect, support, love, ... We met I 48 she 46 & will get married 49/47 2021 once our K1 K2 VISA are approved. We have visited each other’s countries & families. Being open minded & 100% open about both concerns are the key to a solid foundation for a strong future. Best of luck to you & yours.

I wonder if it is the difference between Southern China and Northern China? In Liaoning Province there was never an issue for my wife “ to be“ and I to walk in public holding hands. Or her holding onto my arm. Or stealing a kiss in public. Or making out down by the river. I never encountered a problem with the local men. There is a family photo of my wife, her parents and I taken the day of our engagement where she is sitting in my lap. Her parents didn’t mind at all. This is the moment her father thanked me for loving his daughter and gave us his blessing. We had a great time in China! Her friends treated me great. In one of the restaurants for one of our dinner engagement parties many of her sister friends held the dinner. I was the only guy in the packed private room. They wanted us to kiss. It became a chant. After we kissed, she was all embarrassed and her sister friends cheered. In another restaurant, we were about to depart, we were in the fancy entrance, her friends wanted a photo of us, her sitting in my lap. They cheered. On the flip side, the sister friend that introduced us, was married to a British guy of small stature. Much smaller than me. She was short too. They had married in China after a 6 month fling. When the four of us had dinner together in Shenyang he spoke about the problems of Chinese men threatening him. He was getting bumped into. Things were being said. He complained about it. Then while our ladies were talking in high speed Mandarin, he starts in on how how he hates China, he hates the food, the dirty cities and on and on he went. He didn’t have a kind word to say about China. I remember thinking, “Why did you marry a Chinese woman?” He tried to change her appearance, her clothing style and how she wore her hair. Though they resided in England their marriage failed. My wife and I took 2 years to get to know each other. We asked a lot of questions of each other. When we did get married we knew each other well. One of the things Winston doesn’t talk about, but that I discovered, is all women in China are considered “girls” or “young girls” until they marry. A woman is someone who is married or has been married. So, if you are dating a young single woman you can insult her by calling her a beautiful young woman. They take that seriously. Try a beautiful young girl instead. High praise is when you call her a lovely young girl. Calling her lovely is taken literally and will score you big points. BUT, beware, you call her that and you have started a serious relationship. Once you marry her she is a woman. You can still score big points with your wife if you tell her that she is still your beautiful young girl or lovely young girl. Give her praise. You can still flirt with her after you marry her. Tell her she is your hot sexy, beautiful girl. She will love you more for it. The pressure to marry didn’t exist from her family, but it did with her friends who knew me. They put the pressure on me. It was a constant barrage, “She has met a guy from Australia, you had better hurry up!” Or, “another guy is paying her a lot of attention!” The was no guy, but they were pushing. She did have a few friends who were against us marrying. Yet, it has worked out. It is almost ten years since we married. Everything is great! I still flirt with her. I think because of equality in the U.S. women value the quality of the marriage. Chinese women value the marriage. Getting divorced in the U.S. is very common. In China, though divorce happens, getting divorced can be the cause of her family “losing face.” That is one of Winston’s videos.

This culture is exactly similar to any Asian culture really. Yes the thing you don't want to be is a divorcee with kids whether it be male or female. Of course there is always a hypocrisy with women and worst because older Asians are very sexist, they see women not as helpless but as the main child care taker, cook, house cleaner, and even often times a provider too. There is no stay at home moms or not many because if you are a stay at home mom, you are being lazy that is how my mom saw it. So Asian women have a lot of more responsibilities than the men and often abuse by a lot of them. The older ones and single usually are more independent and already lived with the bad stigma that they usually look for foreign men who will help them and not be a burden on them. Many think these women who are looking for foreigners are poor helpless girls, they are wrong, these are the women who said the hell with it, they want an opportunity beyond what they will get with an Asian man in the old Asian culture.

Winston and Laowhy86 however always emphasize that it is the man that needs to provide an appartement, great job and car, not the woman. Men who do not have that do not qualify for marriage in China. This is a great burden on the side of the man. A woman that doesn‘t have an appartement, great job and car is however perfectly fine. It‘s not that the woman have all the responsibilities and men have all the privileges in China. It‘s simply that they have different sets of responsibilities and privileges.

I think I got the gist of it. I already knew that you shouldn’t openly show signs of public affection at least in a Chinese person’s perspective as opposed to a Western one as I’ve seen with my friend, who doesn’t seem to get that anything’s wrong with doing that when he’s with his Chinese girlfriend. I always tend to look away in those situations and pretend like it doesn’t exist because it’s uncomfortable to look at such public displays of affection. The thoughts that ran through my head were that I should show him this video to get him to better understand how it is, and I hope he’ll understanding and will willingly accept the fact that it’s not as normal in the Chinese culture to do so. Thank you for the video, Winston. You really did your research and brought up insightful information about the topic.

True. IT IS A HUGE STIGMA, hence, many do not marry for love, they just marry the first best person appearing in front of them, at least when they start to get close to 30, and especially so for women who are not wealthy. Wealthy women with careers might even wait until they get 35+.

If there are so many similarities between those two Asian countries ( like no PDA- my Filipino gf would not kiss me when we met at the the airport and ya I was confused and angry until I learned why) it makes me wonder what other similarities there are among all other Asian countries, perhaps excluding Japan for some of the issues caused by poverty.

When my Chinese wife was very young, she got married to a man (in Mudanjiang). They had a child, but unfortunately it was a girl. So her parents-in-law forced her to divorce her husband, even though they loved each other very much. The child went to the ex-husband, as did the house and all the possessions. So unfair. Anyway, much later when I met her in the UK and subsequently married her, she didn't tell ANY of her family. Only the day before we arrived in China (1 year later) did she tell her mother that she was married to me. But it had a good end, her mother liked me and I liked her. This is the same kind of thing that you received from your wife and in-laws, I think.
