I think eating with hands is acceptable for some kind of food. For example, everyone eat chips and french fries with hands. But indians eat everything with hands. 1. As an Indian myself I have never seen a "belly dance" it's rare to see one (at least for me.) 2. Yes, we eat from hands it's part of our culture. 3. We don't go and shove on our Plates..its obvious and basic for a person to clean his/her hands thoroughly before consuming anything. 4. I hate to agree but it's true that some parts of India are not hygiene at all. BUT there's more beautiful and highly well maintained places. 5. Everyone gets it so wrong about Caste System.....its not something that's encouraged here...And its not in the Law. There are its remnants in the society, that too backward and mostly uneducated ones. It only remains in the form of prejudice in some people's minds. You can compare it to racism in western countries. People seem to think that it is such a big problem.... it's not really that big anymore. For all the "castes" and people who were done wrong with over the last many years, India is doing a lot to empower them by providing scholarships and reservation in jobs and education. It has come to the point that the "General of superior" castes are suffering in competitive exams due to the very high threshold for them compared to other people who benefit from the reservation.

Eating rice using hands? That is heavily practiced in Southeast Asia where rice is a staple too. We are proud of it here in the Philippines and it's even encouraged in certain fast food restaurants to get that "authentic/ethnic" countryside feel. It isn't automatically unhygienic if you use your bare hands to eat. Of course you should always wash your hands before every meal though. I am confident enough to say that even our Indonesian brothers do it too (I have worked with few of them) and perhaps other neighboring countries as well (try 90%).

I know! I used to wonder how come they eat rice with chopstick. It turns out the rice is different. It is too drippy to eat with chopstick. 😅 So we use either hands or spoon.

Think about this. Are you confident on the cleanliness of some random cutlery or your own hands? It also acts as a gatekeeper to ensure food safety before putting your mouth. If your hands don’t feel good, will you put in your mouth? I have more surety whether my hands are clean or not. Needless to say that, you won’t eat with the dirty hands.
