I am not caught up in "texturism" because I don't subscribe to the rise of "isms." I'm not falling into an "ism" if I simply want to change my hair style. I like natural hair styles that simplify my styling routine because I'm not fighting against my natural hair. But, it's a hairstyle choice, not a religion. So, I'm open to any healthy, easy, stylish, good looking hairdo. My choice of hairdo may change for no other reason than I want something different. Sorry. There's no snobbish "texturism* (not a real thing) going on over here. IMHO: Ladies, just be your healthy, beautiful, best self and keep it moving. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ~Peace & blessings to all~

Good way of thinking about it. Your hair your choice. Now if only most people thought like that...

As a 4A, I used to hate my hair, thinking Category 3 hair was the ideal hair for black women - because you know, media. Category 3 (usually bi-racial girls,) not only grew their hair long because it's less fragile / dry, but everyone praised their beauty so much for it that I felt my hair made me ugly and inferior as a Category 4. Black musicians put our hair down, black women called it "bad hair," anything that wasn't Category 3 was "nappy slave hair." I DESTROYED my hair trying to texlax it to 3C. I protective styled for a year, my ugly 4A coils started to show again. It was a white classmate at my college who was walking from our class all late, he asked me what chapter we were on, since he just missed. After I answered he suddenly said: "Black girls have the prettiest hair. I've never seen a curly afro - usually they are puffy." I thanked him but was really confused because I thought all afros were puffy, and only bi-racial girls had the pretty curly hair. I started to grow my hair out and take better care of it after college, and years later I finally understand what he meant. 4A is the "cherub-fro" a thick dense afro of these small coily little angelic curls. They are different from the pretty fluffiness of 4C and what traditionally the world sees as afros, but thicker than the curls of Category 3. My 4A hair is this cloud of these insane, intensely defined curls that I can't believe I was ever ashamed of. 4A hair is the 2nd rarest of all hair types and its unreal that I tried to destroy it. That I prayed God would make me like a bi-racial girl so I could be beautiful too...when he already blessed me with this ethereal texture. Some years later, my hair is down my back when straight and stunning in cherub-fro form. Everyone wants to touch it, every black woman asks what technique I use to define my curls. Water. 4A is a dreamy texture that just stays perfectly coily - curly without any product at all

I love and accept my natural hair the way it is. I don't care if no one else does. I don't get caught up in texturism. Tfs💜

Exactly!! But I also think that it's a bit disheartening seeing the type 4c creators never going on to be as popular as the ones in the 3 category. Maybe a lot of it is internalized.

I hope my hair changes for 3a at least because I have 3c hair and no I wasn’t born with 3c hair my hair was 4a when I was younger and then the texture just changed by it self probably because of hormones and the oils on my head but yeah if you’re still growing there is a possible way your hair texture might change

But some of us also have multiple curl patterns on our head. I have mostly 3c/4a, then a little 4c and 3b. It took me a while to realize this after I went natural.

Do you think that a big chop would give me a looser curl?

Your curls tend to look looser the longer your hair is because of gravity. Hence, a big chop will make your curl pattern seem tighter.
