My aunt was one of the first beautians in Rochester New York. The reason the nape is called a kitchen is because it use to be that the kitchen is in the back of the house. The kitchen is in the back of the head. That's where that comes from 🙂.

I was in a toxic relationship and had a fight with my ex and he took snatched braids out my nape area and I’ve been growing it back. So thanks for the healthful tips !

I’m so sorry and I’m glad to hear that you’re no longer dealing with that. When I was in a toxic relationship three years ago I was so stressed my hair shed so bad I had a quarter sized bald spot in my crown

It's called a kitchen because back in the days of using the hot combs to touch up the press and curl before hair relaxere, the hot pressing combs required a small, cylindrical stoves used to heat them. In place of that, the combs were heated in the household kitchen on a wood burning or gas stove and thus the term "kitchen". Madame C. N. Walker learned her craft from Annie Turnboe Malone. Tney were the same skin shade, don't believe the movie as sinister folk always have some agenda to divide and conquer. Nice video!

I have never heard of the term “kitchen” used to describe this part of the hair before, but when you said it my mind immediately went to hot combs being heated on the stove. I remember the nape of my neck being burnt the most by it or at least being the most sensitive to accidental touches by it. Maybe it has something to do with this? Anyways, I love the channel. Keep up the great work. ❤

They call it the kitchen because for people with coily hair the nape area resembles peas so instead of saying get those peas straight the call it kitchen. It sounds better than peas

In research I could find no definitive answer or reason as to exactly why our nape hair is referred to as the "kitchen". The only commonality across the board is reference to the hearth of the home were the hair was always done. One other I found is it being one area of a women's errogenous zone that gets most woman "hot and cooking" referring to the "kitchen." Lol
