So what happens when your knife is so hard to open, it is never practical enough to even carry and use it? Can you "BREAK IN" a knife without use?
I asked this question 2 years ago, and have the answer for you today.

Very knice, GEC. Great video as well. Found your video from a search result. I was trying to find an answer to how people rate pulls on slipjoints. You know when someone says, " oh thats about a 4 or a 5 on the pull." I was hoping you had an answer.

I don't really know how people rate the pull. It seems subjective based on the user. I would call this GEC a 10, due to the difficulty.

I have A wright and son barlow that even now i cant open with the nail neck. The good news about carbon steel blade is that it grip beter with the patina, also in my head i think that the patina can grind on the back spring wich make the spring strech less. I think thats what happand because on my most used case knife the spring is resting below the covers

Spend two years locating and purchasing a GEC. Spend another year at half stop. Spend another year at open position. 4 years later, I have a knife that is a 9/10 opening action 😂

@@CoyoteEDC which is absolutely worth it. I’d do all that if it was easier to locate a gosh darn GEC I want!

supposedly, springs don't get weaker by sitting in any position whether that is relaxed, or compressed. Supposedly... it's only movement iterations, or overextension that cause changes in spring stiffness. Much like a linerlock with too stiff or too weak lockbar tension, you need to overextend the bar in one direction or the other. How you do this on a backspring is by partially opening the blade and putting spacers/shims between the backspring and the blade tang and move the blade. It's a precarious thing, but it should be possible to reduce backspring tension this way.

Could you elaborate a bit more? Have you tried this yourself? Did it work?

Trust me but none of this works. The knife doesn't adapt to your efforts but rather you adapt to the stiffness.
