Have you tried brass plating? You'd copper plate them as normal, but then dip the copper coated item into Sodium Hydroxide with metallic zinc pellets. Allow the item to contact the metallic zinc to zinc plate them. Then heat up the item to allow the copper and zinc to merge and turn a beautiful gold colour.

Sorry to leave a reply like this my iPad wasn’t letting me leave my own comment. I wonder if placing the panels on the silicone mat and using UV resin just a tiny amount to leave a thin layer and flash cure it. Maybe it would help if there’s any leaking or spilling out, it’s clear and you can’t see it and this would avoid any color leaking into any other area and you wouldn’t fight the tape situation if it works! Another way using the same idea, is using a paint brush paint the inside walls while holding it then sitting it down and letting it sit for a moment to let the us resin flow and fill the cracks, reinforcing where needed, this will help you use the least amount possible. I’ve there is any leaking you can simply brush on more resin and coat the whole piece. This would also protecting it from turning green if that’s something you want!

Hey Peter, maybe already been suggested before, but consider laying a thin clear layer of resin and letting it set before any color. That will let you effectively seal all the compartments and then you can confidently move on to the color. Also lets you not have to worry about sealing to the back side of the frame if trimming any flashing is acceptable. Benefit there is you can use surfaces you know resin won't adhere to and will leave an excellent finish on the clear layer.

Genius idea, like down to the exact details too. Kudos, man. I hope he tries this!! I bet it would turn out absolutely perfect, plus that way you could see the colors without the background material messing with the view. You could just put something white under it after that clear layer cures and have a perfect blank canvas!

Makes me think of home. In Colonial New England rich people wanting to let other rich people know they could stop at your farm/ mansion for the night would put a guilded pineapple over the front door. If you weren’t rich you couldn’t afford it. So you would paint your front door bright red. A sign of welcome. I grew up in a dark chocolate brown house with semi gloss Irish green trim and shutters. With a fire engine gloss red front door. The door she repainted every 2 years herself. So that door on your planter says a traditional WELCOME! 😁

I used electrical tape for resin once it worked really well. It kept it from leaking and came off super easy. The only downside I remember is the resin had that frosted glass look where it was touching the glue from the tape. They make really wide rolls of electrical tape these days but I used one of normal rolls.

Looks fantastic Peter! Couple of suggestions for the next time if you’re interested. I would add a thin base layer of clear resin first. That way it will seal up all the panels and you won’t have to worry about color leakage when you add the color layer. Second and this is purely cosmetic, traditional stained glass uses more transparent colors than opaque color. So instead of mica powder you might try some resin dye instead. Definitely stick with the mica though if you love that look the most. Excellent work!!

This is absolutely stunning! The copper plating process looks so straightforward too! I don't know if I have anything to plate... but I might just have to find something... I don't know that it works great as a lamp sadly, I think it would be good to do a few panels of pigment tests to see how well they transmit light and keep their color. Might be a fun way to revisit the Dye Trying winners too!

Blue painters tape is a heckuva lot easier to remove if you remove it before the resin is 100% fully cured, but it will leave a sticky residue behind (I personally just cover the residue with UV resin and call it done) I find for a resin that says 48 hour total cure, removing the tape at 24 hours works; when it basically feels hard but still has a touch of give

I gotta go through your old videos to consider types of tape for resin. Have some of those black wire frame style lampshades and I was going to put resin in the gaps via tape and doing one side at a time. I might do a thin initial coat of UV resin before pouring any epoxy, which could be good for some effects.

Well done!! 2 thumbs up!!! Here is a suggestion. pour a thin layer of clear resin into a small tray and then lay the panels in. You then don't have to worry about leaks and it preserves the copper on the inside. You would only have to trim up the edges as far as post processing. A crazy notion is to drill a vertical hole on the corner and insert a 14GA solid copper wire as a hinge pin and then you have a swinging door that you can access the interior of the lantern and glue the top on. (On 3 sides)

Mr Brown, thank you for this video. I also would like to bring your attention to colored acrylic and textured acrylic sheets both of which can be laser cut and laser etched. We used to laser etch and then use black paint to fill in the small score lines on the acrylic sheets to give us very intricate detail lines on flat materials. You can make the same effect as the lantern without all the cure time and time to copper plate. Good luck in future projects, may you have fewer critical failures along your way. You could use a resin printer and white resin to print the lettering for the Tardis, and embed it into the frame before you pour the blue. As someone already mentioned, a thin layer of clear first would ensure the lettering stays in place while you pour the surrounding resin. Maybe include a jig in the print that holds the letters in place but can be cut off once fixed in place, so it self aligns.

For getting the tape off, I've had good results in the past by warming the tape a bit with a hair dryer so it softens/loosens the glue enough to get it off. Not a heat gun, that gets too hot. You want to warm the glue, not scorch the tape/resin.
