Save it for winter. It really can heat up the hens and not be good for them. A cold weather treat for them. Stick to the garden treats for them (for now). Thanks for stopping by Kathleen!

We have 14 hens, one rooster. We get 7 - 10 eggs a day during peak season. It is way too many for us. We preserve a lot of them, give some away and cook some up and feed them back to the chickens and pigs. Have often wondered if selling them would be worth it. Good video/information! Thanks!

Just find one person who wants eggs, who is easy to get to (or you see weekly). If they buy one dozen eggs each week (for $5) that is $260 each year. That buys a lot of the chickens food. If you've got two people you can sell to, that amount doubles. You need to make sure that they are coming to you, or it's someone you see. If you keep the labor down, and have sellable eggs without washing, it is easy money.

I have 11 hens. Average 6 eggs per day. Never sold any eggs in my life. I give them to people. For that I have gotten free stuff at the hardware store, free inspection sticker, free medical care, free disking for my garden. No way for me to know if its profitable but I have all the eggs I want. Similarly I rarely sell things from my garden and get lots of barter/trade in return. I also put up enough food for me for a year and make a lot of people in my community happy. Thats a pretty good profit to me.

We've used eggs as a trade as well. It's great when you can build a community and share with others. We've done some of that but sell most of our eggs. Keep doing what you're doing. It's making a positive impact in your community!! Cheers!

Infrastructure for us is par for the course. We planned to have chickens for our own eggs but then sold. They still pay for themselves thankfully. Wonderful detailed information Rich! I don’t think time is included in many things. Yet you’re right time is valuable. The cost of the girls alone is expensive. And the time waiting for them to start laying

I’m pretty sure it’s written in some farmer code somewhere that our time is just included in our farm work. 😂 The way I see it is we don’t need a gym pass which would cost a lot more. Our older girls are starting their moulting now.

Hi Rich, another old Swede here. You did not mention “loving” your chickens. Do you enjoy them? I got four chickens, the max allowed in my suburb and fell in love with them. They are my pets, like my dog. Very unfortunately a predator I was ignorant of in my area killed them all-- a mink. Any of you with chickens beware. The DNR says mink are in every MN lake including every lake in the Twin Cities. The mink got the chickens two weeks after my dog passed away so it may be that emboldened the mink(no dog). Anyhow I will get more in the spring and hopefully my heartache will have lessened. And my coop has even more protection. A mink can get in the space a mouse can.
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
We've got 1/2" hardware cloth around all our coops and try to plug all the holes for the barn. So far, a mink (and other predators) haven't gotten into the coop or barn. We love our hens, but they are not pets. Everything on the Farm has a purpose. The hens are around to lay eggs and enjoy the property. Do we get attached to them? You bet. we just don't name them and treat them like our pets. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for stopping by to watch and comment. Sorry for your loss. Reinforce and be ready next spring for more hens.

Great video. Thank you! We're just getting started with our chickens but we only have seven with a max space load of probably double that. We'll get through one full season of laying and see where we're at with production, but our hope is that we'll be able to sell some to at least cover our costs of raising them. This past summer I spent a few thousand building the coop/run, free range area and other startup items so maybe someday we'll be able to recoup that. No matter what happens though I'm just content with the grocery store in our backyard. :)

A great goal! Make sure they will get enough protein and calcium to continue laying. Some mix their own food and then find the hens stop laying. We have kept with the store-bought food.
