I work a job my salary is easily accessible. I have no problem with that. In fact it’s strange to me that people would want to keep it secret.

Because for so many people, their salary is a proxy for their 'worth', in their own eyes or possibly, in others. Been repeatedly shown in experiments that (especially among executive level workers.) a majority would rather get a smaller salary, or bonus, as long as it was more than their colleagues, than a greater, but comparatively smaller cheque.

These conversations are incredibly important at the junior and mid-level roles, but get particularly muddy the deeper you go in your career path, when it gets harder to compare skill sets and “output” on an apples-to-apples basis. For example, employee A has spoken at a huge annual tech conference (bringing much positive attention and client interest to their employer), employee B is a “core team”maintainer for XYZ Javascript framework (bolstering their employer’s reputation for expertise in that technology), and employee C is “merely” doing great work inside their official scope of duties (resulting in happy clients and further business with them). Again, that doesn’t mean the conversations aren’t worth having, but it does get harder to define “equal pay for equal work” the higher you go in a given field.

All jobs funded by the ministry of education where I live are required to have a publicly accessible listing of the pay grid. My company did not even give us access to this. I had to pull teeth to get them to tell me what I could expect from my next increase to plan ahead. Someone called HR at our governing body for something else and it opened the door for all of us to speak up. I forced their hand to make the grid available to everyone on our team. They’re still fighting it going public but at least we have it. Our supervisor and Manager are included on the grid but the CEO is missing from the list. Our wages are also affected by teacher contracts which were recently settled and I’ve made sure to loudly and publicly remind them that we are required to have access to the updated salary grid as a result.

We really need to normalize salary talk and joint negotiation of salary. Shout-out to the University of California that discloses every professor's salaries

The main issue raised in this video is having to negotiate your salary... at all! That is what your Union Rep. is for. Whether you are 'liberal', 'progressive', or 'conservative', you do not want the world, the billionaires have in mind for their non-unionised serfs. Every right you have was wrested from the hands of the owners and bosses; literally fought and bled for. Somehow, people imagine the bosses, became more enlightened. Nah-ah! Join a Union.

Who the heck is disliking this video?? Employers and bosses?? Yeah, pay range should be in the job listing, for starters.

It's crazy people don't share how much they make. It's just money.

I would not do that. If I can’t get a raise I would just leave.

And an ideal way to negotiate is to have all relevant information available.

Here is the wild part. Their is a large wage disparity in Gender, race, etc. Yet at the same time discussing what a person makes is so taboo. Like why? You complain about not getting paid enough, gossip to find others salaries, but to ask outright and see why your are not matching for doing the same work is wild. Bring on the A.I.
