@@Tree Well generally "The Americas" are either counted as 1 big continent, of 2 continents, north and south. Central america, although by some seen as a region, isn't generally considered as a continent, thus the carribean islands, as well as countries like panama, costa rica, guatemala, etc, are then counted as North American countries. “Outside of America” seems to be pretty universally interpreted by the people in this video as “outside of the USA” whether that was meant to be a stumbling block or not. I would have used the phrase “outside of the Americas” with an S to indicate North, Central, and South. Still fun to watch people take the challenge!

A couple months ago I learned the world map that way. Now I've got most of the land countries almost permanently memorized. Basically, every couple weeks, I do the quiz twice for each continent and usually I get an okayish score on the first attempt, and near perfect on the second. Hi there Lingualizer, I love the concept, but I have a suggestion. The best way to phrase your question is, “Can you name three countries outside of ‘the Americas’”. For the average American, the term America is extremely vague in that a lot of people will just assume it means the United States. The other term is much clearer for everyone. - from an American who has traveled extensively
@CaptainAmerica0012 жыл бұрын
*U.S. Citizens! Question is worded correctly! What does 'América mean & represent in the official name, the 'United States of América'? América is not a country or a nation. Therefore, 'American' isn't a nationality or a citizenship. Furthermore, an American is from the Continent of América! - From a U.S. Citizen/U.S. National who has travelled extensively!👍
@sadiemaxfield75662 жыл бұрын
Yes, however, colloquially, saying “American” often means U.S Citizen to the average person. Saying “The Americas” would make it more clear to many people.
@CaptainAmerica0012 жыл бұрын
@@sadiemaxfield7566 Still, the question is worded correctly & doesn't need accommodating for the dummies. Why would people confuse the Continent of América for a country? Or the U.S.A. for a continent?

I blame Europeans and the host asking the questions here. That's how Europeans refer to the US usually (America). For example, my German friend said Did you hear what happened in America today? The term Americans doesn't help either. He should have phrased his question better to not cause confusion and say outside of the America's or North and South America. It's easier in most European nations to just say America rather than put stress into saying US, USA, United States, or United States of America. It flows off the tongue better saying America. When I was on a business trip in the Netherlands 4 years ago, most answered are you from America; I had maybe 3 say US or USA.
@clemente39662 жыл бұрын
@@mr__music5719 And as an European, I blame 'Muricans, or at least their ancestors, for having named their countries after the continent, which in turn made it difficult for non 'Murican people to invent a non derogatory English term to point at 'Murican folks. As for the America vs North and South America argument, I blame U. S. geographers who, approximately 50 years ago iirc a video i' ve seen, decided for no apparent nor legitimate reason to separate the American continent mainly in 2 (can't forget Central America after all, wouldn't be very cash money). As said in the video I've already mentionned, "I don't need sleep, I need to restore the geographical order"
