CAN YOU OWN COATIMUNDI AS PETS? What It’s Like to Own One

I often get asked a lot what it’s like to own a pet coatimundi. Hopefully this video gives you a better idea! They are probably my favorite species of animal, but despite how interesting they are, barely anybody even knows they exist.
I will make more detailed videos soon showing you all how I care for Vega and how to read a coatis body language so you can handle them better if you’re curious about that ^^
For those who want something more detailed and technical I will also be making a video like that in the future.

Thank you! I wanted people to understand their quirks, as well as the fact that despite being cute, they have some enormous canine teeth. I think a lot of people don't realize that a bite from one of these guys if you treated the animal poorly or mishandled it could send you to the ER pretty quickly. Nevertheless, I adore coatis too!

I took my students to the Museum of Science in Boston, MANY years ago. We had a lesson on animals with the staff. We were told to sit in a circle with our feet facing inward as they brought out a coatimundi. It started to wander around our human food circle, then, it leapt up onto my lap and preceded up to the top of my head, and sat there watching the kids. Luckily, it chose me, and not one of the kids, and I am NOT afraid of animals. The kids loved it, and I thought it was really funny, too. The staff asked if I was okay, and I told them I was fine with it. It sat on my head as they told the kids about them, then took it from my head and back to its cage. A fun experience that I will never forget, nor will the kids, I imagine!

My only experience with Coati was in the Iguazú national park. Some tourists sat down on a bench along a pathway to have lunch. As they started taking out their food and eating the Coati came marching out of the jungle, one and two at a time. In a heartbeat there were at least a dozen or more of them. They began insisting on food…very persistently 😂. They were obviously habituated to people and used to receiving food. Well, they displaced the picnicking couple right off of the bench and began ransacking their food. It was pretty funny to watch them take over the picnic and eat all the little snacks and disassemble their sandwiches. They weren’t “aggressive” per se, but they were persistent and more than happy to dominate the space around the food.

We own a female meerkat who is very bonded to us, and I agree with what you say especially about respect and boundaries as not reading your animal correctly and not respecting their boundaries especially around food can cause you to get bitten, and although she would not make a good pet for the majority of the public she certainly fits in well with my home all day life style and although she weighs less than 1KG she is definitely the boss of our dog even though he weighs 40kg. Love to see more about Vega.

I don’t belive there not good pets . They are good Pets . Dumb people think chipmunk laugh are not good pets but they are and easy . I have a chipmunk . It’s stupid sence back in the days people put animals like lions and all I’m the pet store even for haunting and people don’t treat the animals right . Then they want to tell people right now they don’t make good pets .

Sorry for the late reply, but that depends entirely on your state's laws on exotic pets. You will have to do a bit of digging around online and contact your Wildlife Resource Commission (or the equivalent of it in your state) to make sure. I can say that here in North Carolina, it's illegal to own raccoons but legal to own coatis.

Im currently staying in Louisiana for now but unfortunately Louisiana IS infamously known for their Ban & laws against owning pretty much any kind “exotic” pet. I heard plenty of talk on how raccoons are illegal to own here and tbh I wouldn’t be suprise to find out that Coatimundis arent much of an exception.

Encouraging other people to having also encourage illegal traffic, signifying death and removals from the wild of a lot of them. Thanks for the comments! I have never found fleas on Vega, but I do use flea and tick medication on him regardless. Coatimundi use cat flea and tick meds, I have read that dog medication is dangerous for them. Also, for the bizarre criticism (I get this sort of comment often, lol) They are not dogs, they have entirely different needs, and I don't encourage people to treat them like dogs. I made this video to try to help people to understand this. It's my first video though, so I probably didn't convey that like I wanted to. Vega was captive bred by a USDA licensed breeder. Other coatis in the United States are also all captive bred animals born from extensive captive breeding over generations. His parents, grandparents, and great-great grandparents have never been in the wild. He was not stolen from the wild, and neither were any others. They are easy to legally purchase from a USDA licensed breeder and I have never seen a wild-caught one for sale. Buying one has no impact on their wild populations and does not encourage illegal trafficking... That's like saying buying a pet snake or parrot encourages illegal trade.
