Absolutely you can! Even without a humbucker. Set the switch to position four, turn the tone down, and use a darker amp w/ the treble turned down. You get a bright but still mid-present sound that works really really good at slightly lower gain, it gets you the good parts of hi-gain without the shrill hi-treble or buzzy tones that come with driving guitars too hard.
@then00brathalos2 жыл бұрын
another method is using the neck pickup, tone it to mid or mid low (5-3) depending on the occasion, the tone is really thick

@Gelatinous I got a Hot Rails in the bridge position of my '91 American Strat Plus and it's GRUESOME! I put new 500k Pots in it, keep the toggle all the way down to just the bridge pick-up, tone-knob at about 50%, it's set up for and stays in C#-Standard, and plays out a cheap-ass, solid-state Marshall MG100-HCFX... I play it on the Clean channel and get my distortion with a TC Electronics Dark Matter (Gain knob dimed, level: 12:00, Bass: 4:00, Treble: 1:00, Voice: Up) paired with a Tube Screamer Mini (Tone: 9:00, Level: 10:00, Gain: 3:00). ISP Decimator is an absolute necessity ethics set up tho.. My band plays a mix of Grind, Hardcore, Black Metal, Power-Violence, and Punk so when I'm setting up at a show, people look at me like "Wtf? Is this dude for real?" But... NO JOKE, after EVERY show, multiple people approach me with praises on how crushing my rig sounds and questions about wtf is going on with "that" Strat lol!! I don't mean to sound like a pretentious douchebag, it's just something I'm super proud of! Ive owned LTD and Ibanez 6/7-strings and Jacksons with active EMGs but my Strat STILL beats them tone-wise! The playability of Strats is just unmatched (for me anyway)! It's a different playability than the LTDs or Jacksons and, when set up for metal, that Strat playability lends itself to a WHOLE lot of unique sounds not often heard in such "extreme" music! * Sorry for writing a book haha but I can gush about tone all day!

I have a 1987 American Standard (pictured to the left) and I play metal all the time with the original single coils. I also use the AmpliTube app now to get a more aggressive sound. I used to use Boss pedals through a Marshall 5205 (12W solid state w/ spring reverb) and could still get a very heavy sound. I love bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, and Testament and can get their sounds with this set up. My strings are also 11-49s, so that probably adds to the heaviness.🤘🏻

Of course it's about the pickups! I have a custom made guitar, strat style body, but two SD humbuckers! It sounds amazing, and even with not only high, but excessive gain (already hot pickup, distortion pedal and amp gain knob on max). I have plugged once a friend's "real" triple single coil strat into this setup and couldn't get anything out but loud, heavily distorted humming. And that's the difference: I personally like the strat cut way better than a les Paul, but for most metal you pretty much need humbuckers. That's the difference, and since your classical Strat does not have humbuckers, this controversy sparked up. It's not about the guitar, but mostly about the PUs

+Fire Marshall Bill Actually they cut way better after dialing them in right. I mean how many people use tone controls on HB equipped guitars? Many just remove them. Strats have that extra brightness and are more dynamic. Modern metal guitarists are begging for extra brightness and dynamics but are bending over backwards to get it when the answer has been in front of them the whole time. Most metal dudes use some kind of overdrive or boost with a noisegate anyway, wiping any concerns about the strat's low output or hum away immediately.
@primeDecomposition8 жыл бұрын
I'm a strat/tele guy through and through, but truthfully I can't imagine how one could, say, chug away on like some Periphery riffs on the typical strat bridge pup (even with a tone pot wired to it); but I've only sparingly experimented trying to get a metal sort of tone on a strat just for shits and giggles. Even with 'beefed up' single coils I haven't gotten very far, but admittedly I've only high-gain pedals and BF style amps at my disposal to play with. Like a Mesa Mark V would be much more desirable lol. Have you 'run any experiments' yourself? What works for you?

The cheap guitar sounded like a strat. The others not so much, because of the pickups. Strats with typical pickups are decent at best if you want a traditional "metal" sound, but they have a sound with a lot of personality. I love that sound personally, and it's very popular in Japan.

@insystem78 жыл бұрын
SomeDudeOnline He is saying the guy is just playing the bass to fill up the frequencies, he isn't doing any licks or anything interesting with it, he is just using it to fill up the mix. He basically just hit the lowest notes to supplement the guitar. Again the focus was on the guitar, so there was really no need for any good bass playing, just filling up those low frequencies is enough. And yes, before anyone says it, these riffs were perfect for some nice bass riffage. but that's not what the video is about so lets focus on how the guitar sounds.

Because of its shape, a Stratocaster sounds like a Stratocaster even with humbuckers. By putting them in maybe you must sacrifice some tipical Strat brightness and if you leave some single coil it may sound incongruous with the humbucker. But on Telecaster, a bridge humbucker sounds very well and matches the rest, always beacuse of it shapes and weight and of course depending on the wood quality. I use to play metal on my Squier, with the right gain, dialing the bass control up to 7.

no. fat strats are not strats. they are bastardized versions. i could stuff a chevy engine in a ford, and this is routinely done on custom rods, but that dont make it a ford. and no tas, they are not only custom, they make standard versions that they put humbuckers in. that still dosent make it right

All about what you want to accomplish really. And even a single coil strat can be made to sound chunkier with the right preamp/amp combination. Plus in recording, you tend to actually want less distortion anyway. So people can get away with more than they're usually led to believe.
@MagnustheJust8 жыл бұрын
The strings factor in also... Gauge size would depend on the type of music being played.
@fadia74468 жыл бұрын
Try humbucker pickups personaly i loved thoose on flying V models
@sir_john_hammond8 жыл бұрын
Yes, ideally you want humbuckers and heavier gauge strings to tune lower. But you can still get away with single coils on a strat - most any guitar player knows that strat knockoffs are usually the low end these days with wimpy pickup configs, and yet I've heard many play metal on them and done the same myself more than once. It's obvious to anyone who has played around for even a few minutes that it works.
@ryshenton8 жыл бұрын
I always ignored statocasters because I figured they were over used or over rated but I've come to actually see them as some of my favorite guitars now. I don't think the tone is cheesy or anything at all, in fact I kind of love of smooth it is; probably at least more then the Les Paul Gibson, even though I like the Junior probably as much.
@erickleefeld48835 жыл бұрын
If you take a regular, fairly modern Strat that has the reverse-polarity pickup in the middle position, then all you really need to do is go to the bridge-middle combination to get the hum canceled out, and make sure to boost your mids on the amp. This will make up for the scooped out sound from the parallel wired combo, and give you back some punch. Then you’ll get a great sound that goes well with heavy distortion, while keeping the individual string articulation for which Strats are so well known.
@Breaker1973 жыл бұрын
Precisely what i do with mine. Helps if you start with an already high gain amp and then juice it a little with some overdrive/eq. Then you just noisegate the crap out of it and you're basically good. Sure it's not the super 'full', 'thick' or 'big' sound that everyone seems to have an idiotic obsession with, but who needs that crap? You need your guitar to cut through the mix and have full mids, which the strat does wonderfully. Let the bass and drums have the damn room they need!

Can you play metal on a Strat? Three words: Iron Fucking Maiden. Thats enough to answer the question, isn't it?
@curtislitchfield13785 жыл бұрын
I built a Strat using Warmoth parts, Grover hardware, and Duncan pickups. It's got a JB jr. in the Neck, Quarter Pounder in the middle, and a 6-string Pegasus in the bridge. I picked the pegasus because of a Demo by Keith Merrow on the Seymour Duncan website. both humbuckers are coil split using a push/push volume pot. It's a killer metal guitar, and it's what got me back into playing. I'm not a huge strat fanboy by any means, but I use this guitar to learn how to play Intervals tunes. Whether or not you consider that Djent or not, doesn't matter. It's still metal, and my strat sounds great.

@PANICBLADE8 жыл бұрын
Getting something to sound fuller, deeper, louder and with more sustain is relatively easy. The hardest thing to add is that dynamic and articulation, something that the strat is in no short supply of. With the amount of noisefree single coil options and noise gates available, strats are more applicable now than ever. Plus I find myself switching between pickups and using the tone and volume controls on my strat rather than my humbucker guitars, which usually are left with the knobs all the way up on the bridge position.

@crimsun71868 жыл бұрын
***** One thing you can do is make the environment around the magnetic field of the single coil less likely to pick up noise using better shielding. If you have a single single coil active, it doesn't matter how it's wired. You only get the out of phase sound by using one pickup with another pickup wired backwards. They cancel each other out and you only get the difference between them.
