I tore mine 2/3 of the way 4 years ago I had an mri but my doctor failed to tell me it was torn he said I had pulled it bad and that I would be fine in a few weeks so I continued to play on it always hurt and swelled 4 years later I went in again and had my new doctor look at my 2014 mri and he noticed right away that it was torn 2/3 of the way and by how loose it is now that it is completely gone. I play lacrosse on it with a custom donjoy knee brace with little to no issue.

Near-complete tear of left ACL in November 2009, I was 45 at that time and a serious skier and cyclist. My knee never buckled. With doc's advice, we tried PT and based on that success, I went on to my first season as member of the National Ski Patrol that winter, without surgery. I wear a brace when I ski, play soccer with my sons and shovel snow. I have gone on to become a ski instructor, certified in both alpine and telemark skiing. A few years ago I began training and competing in powerlifting. I believe the keys to my success being active without surgery are partly luck in having a stable knee, but also and more importantly, doing the work. Strength training has been key and too many people stop doing the work when the PT visits stop.

I tore my acl at the end of Oct 2018, I was a college athlete in my senior year and my season started in late February. I was allowed to play without surgery and just did a ton of knee strengthening/stabilization exercises and ate a good diet and water. Long story short I tore my acl and had about 80 days before my season started and i made it happen. If you put in the correct work and have confidence in yourself you should be able to pull it off if your looking to play without acl and with a brace ofcourse!

Hi, I am a sport climbing athlete come from Hong Kong China. My ACL was torn back in 2014 but I didn't recognize the seriousness of my knee injury at that time. But later I realized my knee had become unstable and always give way easily. Since then I hardly climb in bouldering gym as my knee hurts every time I jump down from the climbing wall. Not only does I suffer physically, but psychologically I felt weak and fearful as well. After having scanned by MRI, it was found that my ACL and meniscus was completely torn. Luckily, I underwent the ACL reconstruction surgery 2 weeks ago and I hope I can get back to sports very soon.

Hey, can I ask how your knee is now? Have you managed to get back to any climbing? I also knew something was wrong with my knee but I tried to just get stronger naturally but even if it gets stronger the instability is still there so I think its time to just get MRI and go from there.

There’s a great little book on natural healing written by an older man who cured himself of a number of maladies without medical intervention, called My Physician, Myself. I read it a couple of years ago but lost my copy. I’m going to Amazon right now to order one and be more careful with it. It’s more than worth the read. You might look into the work of Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman who lived to be 102.

36 now and completely tore my ACL at 30. I have been playing pick up soccer ever since. Since I played at a decent level I get by with one touch passing and not dribbling and changing direction. Feints are done on my solid leg. There are times when playing, always with a brace, that my knee buckles and I reinjure my knee. I take 2 weeks off and ice for first 2 days then I get to play for a few more months. Ideally, if you can afford it, have someone to help you and depending on which you tore, drive you around to PT, get the surgery. I did my left at 26yo and made a full recovery at a high level without thinking of reinjury at 11 months. I wqs physically good to go at 8 months but the mental hurdle is tough. Hope this helps.

A year ago I partially tore my ACL in my left knee while playing lacrosse, but continued to play the rest of the season with some pain but it was manageable. When I tore it, it swelled up and I could not walk properly nor could I extend or bend it all the way. Long story short, I had more pain in this knee than my actual torn ACL in my right knee. I couldn't sit criss-cross applesauce. This year, about three weeks ago is when I tore my ACL in my right knee. I heard a loud pop and went down crying. Had minimal swelling and a limp for about four to five days. My athletic trainers had me meet with a doctor who ordered an MRI to be done and confirmed that I have torn my ACL. It's about 95 percent torn... so I technically it's a grade three partial tear. I do need surgery but I asked if i could play my last year in college lacrosse and the answer was up to me, I just needed to be fitted with an ACL brace. During this time it had felt as if I didn't injure my knee at all which made me think I could go into practice as if nothing even happened. Yesterday was my first day back and I felt great through the first 1.5 hours so when we scrimmaged each other I decided to crease roll out of habit and I went down crying again with very severe pains. I'm not entirely sure what happened, rather I tore the little left of ACL fibers I had or if I strained my calf/hamstring muscles from compensating. I have a little swelling behind my knee more toward the tops of my calf, and a little bit of a ball like form there as well, and some bruising. I practiced again today and I'm very sore and can't go 100 percent, though I did make it through the entire practice. I'm interested to see how I feel after a competitive game and players who won't be "taking it easy" on me. I am very nervous to play especially after my first day back and already having that pain.

Tore my ACL from being tackled hard in a soccer match 2 years ago. Didn't really realise I tore it at the moment because I could get back up and continue. Sure there was some pain, but I thought it was normal from being tackled. Finished the whole 90mins game, and once I took out my socks, my knee was so swollen I couldn't even see my knee cap. Went for an MRI a week later and found out I tore my ACL, MCL and Meniscus. Couldn't get the necessary surgery done due to some financial difficulties (even until now), so I end up hanging up my cleats for good. Those young athletes out there, do take care of yourself in your sport. Nothing is more depressing than having to give up playing the sport you love. Not a day goes by where I wish I could play again :,)

As a basketball player. I torn my ACL over the summer but I didn't know till it was confirmed on September. So over the 3 months I still played basketball although it was was really difficult I wasn't reaching my full potential. Since basketball has alot of pivoting, shifting, etc. Every time my knee would keep twisting and poping out the pain was not pretty. I went to go check out with an orthopedic around September and it was fully torn ACL. My surgeon said I was lucky enough that I didn't torn my meniscus. And now I'm here recovering from ACL surgery, 2 months post operation.

I injured my acl in the military. Twice. And went without surgery. I finished my tour just barely escaping an early medical separation. I then went about 6 more years of being a civilian mechanic, then construction contractor with it continuing to deteriorate until the last final shred of it gave way completely one day while walking around a corner inside a house I was building. I was unable to work for about 6 months, then tried working again, which lasted almost a year before the pain and instability was too much to bear. The VA decided instead of replacing my knee now, when I'm young, then having to do it again and and again as I work through my useful years, it would be better to just declare me "totally and permanently disabled" - at age 33. For anyone who is able - get the surgery and take care of yourself. You'll thank yourself sooner than you think. If my doctors in the military would have done their job correctly, I would have gotten the surgery when it was most crucial, healed properly, and have a normal life. However their focus was to just slap a bandaid on it, give me all the motrin I could eat, and get me back to work asap. don't ever do that to yourself.

I swear I'm not joking when I tell you this but I have a teammate who completely tore the ACL in his left knee (proven with MRI and other tests) and he came back after only three weeks. He wore a knee strap right below his patella which he claims kept his shin from popping out of place. He somehow managed to play an entire season of very competitive soccer and now, almost a year later he's going to get surgery to get it reconstructed. I'm not saying he made a good choice because playing any competitive sport with an ACL deficient knee is still very risky. FYI: it was his senior year of high school and he didn't want to miss it.

Well it is doable. When your ACL breaks other ligaments have a bigger load on them. Also your leg muscles are really important, when strong can take the load off your ligaments. It is very much up to every persons anatomy, although more usually its for the worst. For example my personal anatomy, as I found out, made my fibula bone slightly bent - that in turn meant some of my ligaments where extra strong and some overstretched as the knee was slightly off perfect balance. That in turn caused events to come together and I broke my ACL completely. Still you are missing an important part if you have a broken ACL, then the next layer off your structure will take the brunt force. Probably other ligaments and more so meniscus plates. Also always the hidden risk off the next injury being a lot more worse as the ACL is not there to stop the force this time. I myself had a 4 month period between the injury and surgery. In that time I played a little paintball even and as adrenaline took over I was rushing full speed in the arena without even feeling my ACL. Although I had already learned that my knee buckled in a certain angle and I guess I had it in my muscle memory to avoid that position. Of course soccer is a lot more dynamic and random in terms of leg movement and forces so that is a lot more dangerous but he might of lucked out. Still not recommended, the next injury will be a lot worse and you are already then grinding away your meniscus.

Hello Doctor David! Thanks for your video. I'm a 42 year old male. I tore the ACL on my right knee last July playing Soccer (non contact). My orthopedic doctor recommended Physical Therapy first. While doing PT, I made good progress and since I was not having any major knee stability issues like buckling or shifting and I had good strength in my knee, my Orthopedic doctor recommended perturbation training for 10 sessions. I was able to complete the training without any issues. Since then I haven't had any major issues and I'm able to do daily activities without any pain. I played Basketball after 4 months wearing the ACL brace and I recently played again and I didn't have any issues at all and I was able to play normal thankfully. I would like to get back into playing Soccer (Goal Keeping), Basketball, Tennis, Golf, etc. I'm a bit nervous, but having the support of the brace is really giving me the confidence to be active. I don't think I can make hard cuts/pivots without the support of the brace. Given my age and I would like to be some what active in playing sports, would you still recommend ACL reconstructive surgery or continue being active and playing sports with the ACL brace?

I tore my acl in my right knee and tore some of the miniscus. I am 16 and awaiting surgery for a reconstruction. About a month after the accident I tried to get back into football, however this was just training with my team and we didn’t know the severity of the damage caused at this point. My shin bone shifted, as said in the video and I wasn’t able to walk for a further three days. I was offered an acl brace which can vary from about £200-£500 and attempted to play sport again. My knee felt week and unstable so I simply use it to stay in shape as all I can do now is go to the gym and do upper body workouts but no legs. The brace only helps me when jogging and is not worth it if you are aiming to get back into sport soon so I don’t recommend buying unless you can afford it or really need it to stay fit. The recovery for my injury has been an estimated 11-14 months. I suggest just try and stay away from competitive sports until the recovery is over after surgery

I have a partial torn ACL recently and I have not yet done a MRI. Anyway, my knee is just swelling and still I can sprint. Then I meet a physical professor and he says that it is not actually a tear in ACL, it is a tendonitis and you just have to rest and use an elastic band to stabilize your knee in order to give it more time to heal.

I have no ACL, tore it in the ocean when a rip tide came and wiped me off my feet, my knee went 90° sideways and thought I broke it. Then, as I was "healing", I was getting into my car (the step into the car with one leg method), and went 90° again, this time with my full weight over it, and completely severed the ligament. I will likely need surgery at some point, but the docs say due to my age (too young), weight (obese) and profession (not physical, office work), they want to put it off and just have me try to do physical therapy exercises to strengthen the muscles around it to help support it. But this weekend, my knee went backwards too far, and I've been in agony every day since. It's hard!

Hi, I play soccer in a lower league (semipro) 3-4 times a week (2-3 practices, 1 game + gym 2-3 times a week + 60-90min of yoga) and (apparently) I torn my acl in Feb. I had my knee checked 3 weeks after the injury (after the pain and swelling receded) and the lachmann test was actually negative (the orthopedic doc wrote that all ligaments were firm) so I returned to soccer after about 5 weeks. I played in every game since April 1, (90mins) = for 2 months without ever having any instability issues. While I didn't feel 100% at first, now, after 3 months since the injury, the only reminder I have is a somewhat limited range of flexion (stretching my quads, I can bend the knee to about 90-95%). Now that the season is over I had an mri and the results show a discontinuation in the ACL and the radiologist concluded it was a complete tear of ACL with laxity. Based on this, should I consider a nonsurgical treatment or would you just really recommend an acl reconstruction if I want to keep playing? Thank you

So i took my two weeks off and got right back at it. This latest september i was also playing hockey when i was knocked to the ice when somebody kicked the outside of my knee which i felt the shin bone slip and a pop. I went to the same doctor and he told me that i could play in one weeks time. so i went back a week later. There were no further problems with my knee until last friday when i was recommeded to go see the glen sather clinic in the U of A hostipal. There ortho doctor told me that i tore my acl, so i was mis-dignosed and now i need surgery. P.S- Thank you glen sather clinic for your amazing hospitallity.

No, you can't play a sport like Basketball/Soccer at a high level* without an ACL. You absolutely CAN ski, play golf, and maybe even Tennis (at a recreational level) when you're not reacting to the unpredictability of an opponent. I've torn both ACL's, the one in my Right knee I re-ruptured while skiing and didn't know it until my knee gave way over a year later while doing a diagonal skater hop completing a plyometric. My point being; I skied hard 4 more days that trip, and all the next year at a high level, played golf at a high level, and even played tennis without my knee giving way. The medial portion of the knee bugging me from time to time was a sign that the meniscus was shouldering some load without the ACL. When it did give way, however, I tore a piece of my medial meniscus and needed to get that snipped along with a revision. Now I'm 8 weeks into an ACL revision rehab with al allograft and doing really well!

When I tore my acl I didn’t know I did it, I heard it pop and I thought i just landed wrong because I could walk on it, I iced it and rested for a day and 2 days later I went to a basketball workout and took 3 back dribbles and tried to go forward really quickly and my knee gave out and snapped again, it was very painful and to mention before it did the same thing when I was playing with my dog. I convinced my mom to take me to the doctor to do a X-ray but X-rays are for broken bones so they told me I didn’t break anything. It kept bothering me and was very uncomfortable so I got a referral to get a mri I got the results back and I tore my acl and meniscus. This happened almost 2 months ago and my surgery is in a week I am nervous but very excited. I really disagree on trying to play on a torn acl it will give out and you will maybe tear more parts in your knee.

But ended up dislocating his lower knee nd breaking up 4 of his ligament just after 6 months of his comeback. So, playing without an acl for while might just be okay but. In a longer run. I am currently 35. Tore my right acl Jr year in high school. I didnt go to hospital and coaches forced me to get an mri a month later and was complete tear. During that month i was at least able to squat with 300-400 lbs with no issues i just had no stability in running, cutting, or jumping. Had surgery and untill today knee is better than original. At age 33 again in football tore my other acl. My wife was about to have our 3rd child so i decided not to operate. I was depressed as i could no longer play football, basketball, or soccer as those are sports i love to compete in competively. So i began to go to gym and for cardio would walk. Started swimming for the pain/inflamation. Then i began to use the mountain bike as that did not bother me either since the knee always maintains somewhat bent. To make a long story short i did an ironman 70.3 with 7 weeks of training. Just a few months after i tore my acl. It took many set backs in inflation and loosing weight but finally did a marathon 4:30 hrs with this torn acl. I have done 11 hr bike ride. So now i found a love for doing triathlons. I can now jump 100% just have to be careful on landing. I used to dunk and i am 5 7.5 inches. I still can not do cuts or kick a ball with torn acl but other than that its pretty solid. Maybe this helps someone.

Torn my acl 3years ago 2nd time and this time i didnt have suegery. My sport was basketball and its definietly possible to play, but you cant do pivots or crossovers at 100% speed. I would recommend knee compressor although it does not provide the stability needed, it does a great job of improving your prorpioception, because after tearing acl a lot of people lose the sense of where their knee is in the Space - which may cause them to injure again

Several years later after surgery I have skied a second time which I can say I experienced some worrisome buckling and a sore knee. My question is should I snowboard instead having never done it before and only having skied twice in my life, in order to reduce the risk of another knee injury. I think I would enjoy the sport that keeps me safer in regards to my knee. Thank you.

I tore my ACL after playing football in March '19, by going for a shot at the same time as the other person blocked it, presumably he had a stronger leg than me and so the impact went directly through my knee and I heard two loud cracks. I didn't know I had done this at the time as I could walk properly a few days later, and after checking up at A&E they said I didnt have any knee problems after doing the ligament movements, and went skiing 5 days later (holiday had already been booked and did not want to miss this), but hadn't played football, only running, tennis and skiing until 3 years later I then re-inured my ACL again playing football in September 2021, I had played about 4 weeks worth of matches until I got to a match where I was doing side steps and felt a slight buckle, but played on.. I then went in to block a shot and as my leg landed, the exact same two pops occurred and the same injury happened. It healed up again to the point I can run and play basic football, but sometimes moves out of place when I do certain movements. I had surgery on this a week ago where they grafted from my hamstring I'm hoping I can get back to at least 80% of what it was, but i know it will take a long time. Let me know if you have had anything similar

I have torn my acl in both knees. My right one was when I was 15 after that I stopped playing competitively until I was 20. My left one was when I was 22. I had surgery a year after on my left one but I have never had surgery on my right one. My right almost never ever gives in but when it does I’m in excruciating pain. My left one didn’t give in at all until a year later when I was jumping on a trampoline. Now it almost always gives in once a week when I play football. The pain is bearable I can carry on to finish the game. And I have a little swelling and feel slightly uncomfortable for a couple days following it. I use kt tape and a knee sleeve, I love playing sports too much to give it up. Last year I would go to the gym everyday for the whole year and managed to build my leg muscles up quite well. This reduced the amount my knee would give in and I felt a lot stronger, durable and confident playing sports.

Dave m when I was 15 the procedure was to put 2 steel rods through the bone which would have gone through the growth plate and stunted the leg growth in my right leg so the doctor told me to wait until I was 21. When I tore my other at 22 the doctor told me to do the most recent one first. After doing that one I feel like my right leg has better healed itself rather than surgery.

I have torn both ACLs. My left ACL was torn kickboxing and I had it repaired (using my patella tendon along with meniscus excised). I was able to fight 9 months late. I did have another procedure to break up some scar tissue as I could hardly bend it, Years later I had my right ACL torn (a gradual tear eventually becoming a complete tear). I am able to still compete (in Judo these days). I assume that scare tissue allows me to do so. My right knee works better than my left knee. It has better range of motion. I can do most things except heavy lifting (like a dead lift or anything thing that puts a lot of pressure against my right leg). Would be interested to know your thoughts on this Doc.

I’m 12 year old and just completely tore my ACL, proven by MRI, I was play basketball and jumped to block a shot, I look back to see if the shit goes in, and then I land without looking how I land, then all the sudden my knee goes out and I fall, this was at recess, so I missed my basketball game that night, then I was walking a few days without pain and thought I was fine, so the next week, I play in my game, and 45 seconds before halftime, I fall to the ground again, and the pain was bad, I was rolling and the ground and pounding the floor, I knew something was wrong, I was crying cause I knew something was wrong, not because of the pain, yet the pain was bad enough to cry about, and went to the doctor, and yup, completely tore my ACL, so for me, I could not play after I tore it because when I got up and started walking in the basketball game the week after, it felt like I was walking in nothing every time my left leg landed, I have to get surgery in 7 days, 2 days after Christmas, I’m too young for this too happen:(

And I recommend not trying to play with a torn ACL without surgery because it will give out and again and it will be painful, very, and it can run down and tear other muscles, bones, and ligaments.

Hi, I originally tore my cruciate over a year ago but due to lockdown, had no idea.. i saw a number of physios who presumed meniscus damage, i rehabed for 4 months and then came back before injuring it again 1 week after full training. Ive now rehabed again when i finally got an MRI, i then began to play games as i felt great, got my results before being told i had no Cruciate ligament and small meniscus damage, but that my legs ate strong and thats why ive been able to play. Im currently still going while waiting for surgery, but i get no pain or swelling. Its a little confusing

My acl is torn. I’m about a year post injury..I’m not as active as I was because I don’t want to hurt it again. I was treated non surgically and still have trouble with full extension..it feels like my hamstring is tight. I am wondering if there’s a way I can tell the degree of instability or disability. I want to get back to wheelies on my dirtbike but don’t dare. Note: ortho did pull test manually and my tibea just moved forward about an inch it seemed. However m.r.I. Showed no acl damage. Ortho assured me it was gone.. thoughts??

So I have possibly torn my ACL in my left leg (I’ve torn my ACL and meniscus in the right leg previously) and I’m waiting for an mri appointment... I’ve played basketball at a pretty intense level but not at 100% and the weird thing is my knee has not buckled yet my knee would swell up and go stiff after I got done playing but I haven’t felt any real pain like I did when I completely tore my other ACL

I tore my ACL playing soccer 3 months ago. I can run almost normally but the knee is not stable, or so it feels. My question is: is it ok to have an operation to reconstruct the ACL at 55 years of age? I'd want to go back to tennis, but no more soccer I guess!

sorry to hear, i have a similar situation, for me the doctors keep saying if i were older they would consider other options, but i think that had to do with using a cadaver all or a piece of my own tendon

I torn my acl playing in a soccer scrimmage I used ice for a week and got better, after that I continued running 15 to 18 miles a week and no problem, the problem was just even juggling the soccer ball or even stretching was painful, until at work in a simple pivoting to my left I torn my meniscus and that was the end my meniscus turned out to be a buckle tear which prevented to extend my leg. End of my story don't play or pivot if you know your acl is torn!

I completely tore my anterior cruciate ligament 2 months ago and my MRI report said that I also have mucoid degeneration seen on both the medial and lateral meniscus... but I dint have any swelling in my knee.. no buckling of knee not even a sensation of my knee giving way .. I got my MRI done twice to see the improvement of my knee my meniscus improved a bit .. My doctor has suggested me for brisk walking and he said me to increase the speed day by day up to a month and he said he will let me play after one month.. so Dr can u plz suggest me something would it be possible for me to play without an ACL ... will I be able to play basketball without an ACL??? Is it cumpolsary to get the arthroscopy done.?? If not done will I have any impact on my knee ?? I'm just 20 years old.. does any protein rich foods .. foods rich in vitamin c which consists of collagen forming ingredients help me out??? I would be glad if u help me doctor since I have delayed my surgery .. should I undergo surgery or not??? Thank you 😊

So I’ve torn my acl 3 times , first time I blew it grade 3 when I was 22 , I am an extreme snowboarder always hitting 50-80 ft jumps , i snowboarded for 7 years in a cti brace with minimal problems then finally got it replace at 29 , did quad tendon graft and blew it out again at 32 (grade 3 again ) snowboarder for 2 more years then got it fixed , now just did a partial tear grade 2 on the replaced acl , wondering if it’s even worth it getting it fixed again at this point since the replacement graphs don’t seem like they last long unless you don’t play hard

I had partial acl tear in my left knee the mri wasnt so effective because it can barely differentiate that how many a fibres of ny acl were lost. This was 5 years since the i went through a rehab now quad and calves are in good shape. Can i play football now.? And yeah how time does it require to fully heal the partial acl tear. I guess 5 years are more than enough can i play football i feel some instability in my knee when i play too much or when i become aggressive during the game. I guess playing it light and for fun purpose would be quite good

I was diagnosed witha complete acl tear, meniscus tear, degenerative cartilage, and mcl sprain 2 weeks ago. But since injury I've been able to fully walk and the knee is only tight and I've been back to training in the gym and have been able to squat to parallel. Has anyone had an experience like this?
