Scoliosis patients can take part in activities like swimming, running, Pilates, or yoga. However, these activities should not be used as the only form of treatment.
Care must be taken to insure that these activities do not inhibit treatment or exacerbate the existing curvature. For example, when treating an S-Curve patient, exercises may improve one curve. Unintentionally, however, the other curve may worsen.
That is why it is important to discuss all forms of exercise and stretching with a scoliosis specialist. Scoliosis exercises must be tailored to each patient.
This is because every patient has a different spinal curvature, balance, and range of motion. Furthermore, because of changes that can occur with age, there are different exercises that are appropriate for children versus adults.
Exercise and fitness are essential for achieving the best outcome of an exercise-based scoliosis program. Scientific studies have proven this fact.
