Glen Campbell is one on the kings of guitar improvisation. People have broken down this improvisation solo to include major, minor scales, and other scales as identified by college trained musicians. He openly stated he can not read music. However, he does k know bar chords. What a gift.

Mike Kanowski: to know better, please listen to the "Carol Kaye: Session Legend Interview (full)" here on You Tube, (or others Wrecking Crew interviews here around) in which Carol states that 'The Crew' (as it then not was called yet), at first saw him plainly as a superb gifted guitarist that could play all without reading notes. Only a little later to find out that he could sing same like an angel.

Very well done! I get a kick out of people saying Glen's playing wasn't recognized or was under appreciated. Just who is it that didn't know about Glen Campbell? He spent over 40 years performing around the world and everybody I know would place him at or near the top. Even the rockers and punkers would stop to watch Glen (or Roy or Jerry Reed) play on TV, at least as far back as the 70's.

I had a backstage pass at one of his shows, when he was in his prime, and spent about 10-15 minutes talking with him. He was just as cordial as could be....like you were talking to your next door neighbor. We talked about his tv show, the cool solos he did with Johnny Hartford, We talked about John Wayne and the set of True Grit. Then his daughter took a photo of us together. It was am amazing moment. Yes, I'm a guitarist. And his show was just fantastic.

Glen was one of the greats for sure and a member of the The Wrecking Crew. That group of studio musicians were famous for their ability to create this kind of musical magic on the fly leaving everyone with a look of awe like in the video.

The man was incredible! I grew up a straight-ahead rocker, so I didn't really pay much attention to "country" artists for a long time. I grew up in a house where my mom listened to country music, so naturally, I rebelled. But that all changed when I started jamming with others and had my horizons widened by some of my jam mates. Then I started paying closer attention to players of every style I could find; one of the best things I've ever done. A lot of the younger players think that a guitar has to be this screaming, wailing, hard driving wall of sound that simply pulverizes you into awe. Not so; I found so many other ways to shred on the guitar. Chet Atkins, Andre Segovia, Jerry Reed and a whole lot more showed me that it could be so much BETTER when you're not hiding behind a wall of distortion or other effects. Trying to pull off those wonderful, clean lines made me work HARD at trying to duplicate what I was hearing and made me a MUCH better player in general. Not only did it open my eyes to how a guitar could be used, it also opened my eyes to a lot of great music that I'd previously been ignoring.

That's a wonderful story and reminds me of myself. I grew up listening to my mom play Hank Williams and I embraced hard rock as a result. But I never stopped loving country inside. I just didn't talk about it. Now that I'm 57, I know for sure that some of the most bad ass guitarists were country players. Glenn, Jerry, and Chet Atkins. And let's not forget the great Les Paul! He's the missing link between the genres. Also - who in their right mind wouldn't want Glenn playing on their record?? A solo artist who was also the best-of-the-best studio musician.

I had the great good fortune of seeing Glen Campbell open for a country music show in Phoenix AZ in the mid-'60's. He was the best!

Thanks for showcasing Glen. In the audience are Chet Atkins and Ray Clark (among many others) and they just sit back and bask in this. He was a member of the Wrecking Crew even though he couldn't read music. He probably played on thousands of hit records. Glen became good friends with Alice Cooper and they were golfing buddies. Eddie Van Halen asked Alice to ask Glen for a guitar lesson. EVH knew class when he heard it. In fact, Alice's video talking about their lives after Glen died was a very moving tribute.

I've seen that interview. A couple years age I stayed at a very middle of the road golf resort in AZ. because we were golfing in the area, and while looking the place up before staying there, I ran across a video of Cooper being interviewed on the practice range. When we went for breakfast the first day our stay, I asked our server, a kindly elderly woman if she had ever met Alice Cooper there, to which she promptly pulled out her cell phone and showed me pictures of him with his arms around her. Keep in mind this was no where near a fancy place, it was just a local muni in golf terms, but AC would show up and just be one of the locals working on his game. I would have killed to meet him, I always considered him to have the best voice in rock, and Campbell one of the most talented guitarists in country/pop, and know all about the 'Wrecking Crew'.

Glen was not only one of the greatest guitar players of all time, he was the greatest celebrity golfer of all time. According to Alice who golfed with many professional golfers, from 150 yards in, Glen was the best short game golfer he ever played with, celebrity or out and out pro.

He used to record at a friend of mines studio in branson,she said the band would record then he came in and played his guitar parts and sang at the same time once and went home, never had to Play it twice. That's talent!!

A little late in viewing this video, Glen Campbell was amazing on guitar. Early on he was a studio musician and didn’t even sing. I started playing guitar after hearing is 12 string guitar instrumental album in the mid 60’s. I can truly say he’s the one that hooked me on playing acoustic guitar. It’s been a love affair ever since then It’s been a guitar love affair ever since then.

Growing up in the 70's I always enjoyed listening to the older rock n roll from the 50's and 60's. Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys were a couple of my favorites because they had this incredible guitar sound that few other bands could compete with. As I got older and started playing myself, I found out the goofy cowboy in the John Wayne movie True Grit was this incredible player who not only wrote the theme song for the movie but also played all of those incredible guitar licks from the 60's that I loved! I have been a Glen Campbell fan ever since. He was truly an amazing player, and he definitely is in a class all by himself. People who don't play have no idea how good this man was. Really enjoyed learning this solo. I actually sped up the video to 125 once I memorized the runs to see if I could keep up with Campbell's speed haha. I won't share that little secret. Great video!

When I first saw this clip years ago, I couldn't believe how good Glenn was. After watching " The Wrecking Crew," Glenn must have had his guitar on his lap for more time than fifty musicians did in a lifetime. He and the crew were responsible for almost every hit song in the 50's, 60's, 70' and 80's. If you haven't seen the documentary, it is fantastic. The day he pasted away hurt., still does.

Fantastic video on one of the true greats of music. When legends like Roy Clark and Chet Atkins are watching and smiling from ear to ear, you're doing it right. Most people don't know and might not have caught the record label showing the songwriter credit of another legend, Mr. John Hartford. The song was originally released on Hartford's second album and wasn't much of a success for him, but it did catch Glen Campbell's attention. 2 of the 4 Grammys awarded to the song in 1968 went to Hartford and he often claimed that the royalties from the song gave him the freedom to live the life and record the music he wanted.

I first saw this video of Glen playing this song a few years ago and would always be delighted to hear him jam on this song! I would just be there, jaw dropping and wide eyed, truly amazed at Glen's beautiful solo. Thanks Guitar Pilgrim for emulating and teaching us how it's done.

You're a hundred percent right about keeping everything relaxed. At a famous Music Conservatory whose name I shall not mention, as a young man, I remember digging deep into the archives in their library on some books explaining the physiology involved, that which must be called upon by concert pianists to perform some of their incredible god-like nearly impossible things to play, and the most important thing to remember is the relaxation of the limbs involved.

Thank you for walking us through this impressive solo. Now that I've played through it with you, I notice that, except for a few chromatic passing tones and maybe a secondary dominant chromatic tone, all the notes in the solo are in the D major scale, played fluidly in many positions. We get so wrapped up in pentatonics and various jazz scales that we forget that wonderful solos can be played in a major scale when guided by a gifted melodic sense and unerring ear. I believe that one would find that Campbell played all of his solos with basic major or minor scales -- rarely with a pentatonic scale. He also stuck to the shapes within basic keys of E - A -D - C - G, and changed to other keys by using a capo. I believe that his style was highly influenced by bluegrass guitar and western swing, along with rockabilly and pointers that he picked up from fellow session musicians like Tommy Tedesco and Howard Roberts. Part of the effect that blows away guitarists that followed was the rare use of the major scales in later rock and country music.

Chet and Roy looking over your shoulder....no pressure. Glenn had a regular feature in Guitar player magazine in the 70's and was held in very high esteem by all. Time moves on and people today think of him as a vocalist.

Very respectable take wow. Love it. Glenn Campbell is one the most underrated guitar players of all time. He created the beach boys sound to classic country and has contributed to rock n roll in ways many folks miss. Great tribute sir
