At 62 years of age, I can honestly say I've dealt with a total of (2) car salesman I found to be reputable. Both had commonality in that a)they weren't the least bit concerned about their commission and b)they were more mature men who had been raised properly and just didn't have it in them to be dishonest. They knew all the "tricks of the trade" and simply chose not to participate. That's a good mantra for life right there, younger folks. Good examples of human beings, really. - Ed on the Ridge

I've known some car dealers who I trusted. They worked for the manufacturer-owned dealership in the home city of the manufacturer's headquarters. Their organization and their rewards were structured so that they worked to maintain the value of the brand and to avoid any funny business or dishonesty. If they would've tried anything funny they would've been punished by the manufacturer who owns the dealership even if their ploy would've potentially made them money. You could tell from all aspects that they did everything by the book.

@@pistonburner6448 European car dealers operate a lot differently than the US. Some states ban direct manufacturer sales, meaning dealers are privately owned. There is no such thing as a manufacturer-owned dealership in the US the way you're describing. The closest we have to that is Tesla, but their dealers are designed like an Apple store, not a traditional car delerships, and they won't have any models available for test drives. The dealership model in the US is a big talking point right now with all the massive markups we're seeing.

@@Glitchunlocked You're wrong. Many European nations also have purely non-manufacturer-owned dealerships. I never said anything about what exists in the US...and you then proceeded to contradict yourself and admitted that there are manufacturer-owned dealerships in the US so I have no idea what your point is.
@Glitchunlocked
@Glitchunlocked Ай бұрын
@@pistonburner6448 I'm not wrong about anything... I'm just making a comparison to your German example. You're arguing a strawman, I never said Europe doesn't have the same types of dealerships we do, I just said they tend to operate differently than ours in the US, as evident by your own example. "that there are manufacturer-owned dealerships in the US so I have no idea what your point is." As I've said, these are not traditional dealerships. They are stores in shopping malls. But regardless, Tesla has been sued countless times for this practice, with varying degrees of loss. No need to get so bent out of shape, yeesh. Have a good one.

I’ve had one, count them one, straightforward, honest and simple car purchase. In that case, I walked in, picked out a car, was given a good price, and went through the purchase with no bullshit about price, service plans, finance options, etc. The whole transaction took about thirty minutes. The secret? I knew the sales manager and was good friends with his girlfriend. Not his wife, I didn’t know her. But I’d known his girlfriend for years. Best buying experience I ever had.

I started my own small car lot while I was in the military over seas, I didn't make the most off it. A few grand here and there, as I was doing it part time. I loved doing that, and dealing with the headaches of logistics and local processes people didn't want to bother with. So when I got out of the military, I worked at a big name used car dealer for 3 weeks. That's all I could take, seeing person after person get screwed over. You CANNOT trust 99.9% of used car dealers!

I think the dynamic of the transaction is important. If they're selling your car on consignment they probably want to maximize their commission. If they're trying to sell you a car, forget about it. There's no trust in that situation. At the end of the day, are they working for you or are they trying to get your money?

Lots of video showing live auction bidding ,auctioneer is taking 30K-31K-32K bids in the crowd when the reserve is 34K.When the bidding stops ,there was no real money at any of those figures. Highest bid was 23K. Imagine trying to win an auction by bidding 34K only to find out there wasn't any actual bids.

In Carl’s defense, there’s youtube guys who are in the industry who take cars to auction, and sometimes do very poorly and lose money. If the right bidder isn’t in the room, if two or more people aren’t interested in the car, it might sell cheap. If the estimate was $180k and the risk free, no fees offer was $150k, then it’s not bad peace of mind to take the cash. Might be leaving money on the table, but zero stress. At BJ, you got the transport and auction fees, plus the consignment fee which I presume includes prep, pictures, etc. Very possible the seller was going to pay 30%+ right off the top, so if the cars brought in $200k, the seller only sees $140k. I’ve sold collector items online, and by the time I pay shipping fees, auction fees, paypal fees - I’m kicking myself for not just keeping the thing. And that’s before factoring in damage in transit, or an unhappy customer who either wants to return it on my dime or wants money back bc of phantom “issues”…

He had made a profit after the first 3 sold for a bit over 150k. If we guess the others sold for a total of 150k, he has 300k. How much would auction fees for 6 cars run? Along with giving this guy a commission of10-20%? Would the seller come out with more than the 150k he prior to the auction?

I had just got off work so I had on t-shirt and jeans and boots. I had the money still have it. I was told I can't afford that car or any car on his lot. Then he told me he had a buyer for it that us trying to get the money for it and if he can't then there is another guy that is trying to get the money to buy it. I had / have the money to but it and he refused to sell it to me until he saw what I was driving. Then he was chasing me to sell to me but u had no interest in his junk.

That said, one guy said he’d buy me any car I wanted at auction - just tell him what I was looking for, and he’d charge me $1k over his costs. Seemed very fair, though there was no real incentive for the guy to find a well priced car. But a real nice offer nonetheless.

Never met a honest car salesman. Met a lot of honest people in service. Hopefully my luck will change on the next deal. Most car salespeople (especially at multiple brand used car lots) don’t know much about the esoteric model that you are trying to transact on. It’s a paycheck to them. Be kind and decide if it’s clean enough to problem shoot mechanicals. The last two nice used cars had shot brakes and bad tires, made my chess move and got a deal. There are good people out there, most are not, be surprised sometimes and get on with life.
