What if the Wall is made in such a way that it is comprised of really thin planks length thin layers in between them free space to give like a place for particles to stay. And tunnel human body atom by atom. What would be the probablity in that case. This idea is far fetched but hey its Science.

Some Guy mr weasley explains that muggles go out of their way to choose not to see magic, even if it’s right in front of them. For example, if you say someone run onto Platform 9 & 3/4 as a muggle observer, you wouldn’t immediately conclude someone ran THROUGH the wall, would you? You’d probably convince yourself you were imagining things or your eyes played tricks on you

It is mentioned in the books that magic exists specifically to prevent muggles from going near magical sites such as Hogwarts (upon approach, muggles will suddenly recall some urgent thing they must be doing somewhere else, and should they be able to resist that then they'd only see dilapidated ruins on the verge of collapse), so it stands to reason that some other, similar magic is at play on Platform 9 3/4; perhaps a mild muggle repellent charm to keep them from going to that specific section of the wall and leaning on it, only to tumble into 9 3/4, coupled with a perception altering charm so that they don't notice the multitudes of people vanishing by a single portion of the wall (which would likely amplify the natural tendency of muggles to ignore the magical occurrences that happen around them, chalking it up to tricks of the light or hallucination).

Sorry, but you couldn't. The wall is laden with muggle repelling charms, so if a muggle would even walk near it, they would suddenly change direction without even noticing. Even if you were staring right at it and thinking "i'm gonna run right through it", you would just experience second thougjts about it, like "i'd just hurt myself" "i'd look ridicolus doing it" and finally deciding against it. It's the same with the Leaky Cauldron and the entances to the Ministry and St.Mungos. The charms would just make you think that it's not worth the time and effort. Sorry.

THAT'S HOW THE FLASH IS SUPPOSED TO FAZE THROUGH WALLS! In the book "The Physics of Super Heroes" the author says that a way The Flash could faze through walls in real life is by vibrating his atoms in such a way that they impact the wall enough times per second that the probability of them tunneling through the wall increases to about 100% and he fazes through. Keep in mind that in the comic book cannon the Flash can indeed move well over the speed of light. Yes that's not possible in real life but COMICS!

That's terrifying. It's bad enough for some characters who have that sort of power but this wouldnt be by choice. What if you hit the ultimate multiversal string of luck and fell continuously? That's a nightmare. It's not like falling through the sky. It's not even like falling through space. Not even subatomic particles will understand what you're going through. What would you call that? You still exist but how would you physically prove it at that time? What restrictions are there on falling speed? Could you fall out of the god damn universe? This is one of those situations when the quickest death would be the most merciful.

Think about it this way. If you could quantum tunnel through a brick wall, you could quantum tunnel through empty space/air. The atmosphere is a similar barrier in the eyes of the quantum world. Though unlike the wall, you can physically displace the air molecules/atoms because they aren't as tightly packed and linked together like a solid like that brick wall. But I don't think that would matter. You could still quantum tunnel through that space without disturbing what's in between. So if the odds of quantum tunneling was higher at a realistic rate, you'd not only have people quantum tunnelling through walls, but also tunneling through empty space and seemingly teleporting short distances at random. I would think this would be kind of impractical in day to day life. About to take a dump on the toilet? Nope. Your **t just quantum tunneled into your lap and now you got s**t all over your jeans. :P About to sit down on your computer desk? Nope you just quantum tunneled a couple feet to the left and missed the chair and thus fell on your ass. And of coarse this is ignoring the fact that your individual atoms would quantum tunnel away from each other and thus make it impossible for solid matter to exist because molecules would fall part and not hold together for very long due to atoms escaping those bonds via quantum tunneling. Solid matter wouldn't exist if quantum tunneling was as easy as Harry Potter would depict it without magic. While it would be cool to quantum tunnel through things, be thankful it's not as easy as it would be in Harry Potter if it was done through science, else you'd have a hard time sitting on your chair, simply crossing a street without having to worry about teleporting into a nearby car, or even being able to exist in the first place :P Oh and you forgot to mention what the odds would be for a "normal" object like a human. You factored that as a single giant atom. but think of it this way, humans are made of an uncountable amount of those atoms. They would all have to quantum tunnel through the wall SIMULTANEOUSLY. If the odds for a giant atom doing that was already that low, imagine that countless amount of atoms of a normal human doing it at the same time. In fact you'd more likely to lose an arm or leg from quantum tunneling then your whole body making it through. So instead you'd be seeing random body parts teleporting through the wall while you have the now bleeding to death person left behind. It would not be a pretty sight... :P

Landon Block considering Dobby closes the "gate" in HPatCoS, it is more than a simple illusion. I always imagined it more as a portal to another location, placed on the molecular surface of the wall (which would give the appearance of phasing through the wall), with various muggle repellent and perception altering magics placed upon and around it. It made more sense to me as a child than the whole "there's another platform at King's Cross that fits inside the wall between platforms 9 & 10, when the train and the tracks it rides are clearly in the same physical space" thing; surely SOMEONE would have noticed the extra tracks not on the station's plans, or the bright scarlet train riding on tracks that seemingly dead end into a wall. Although, if the actual Hogwarts Express station is not in King's Cross (as my portal theory would suggest) then having to go to KC, run at a specific section of wall, and be teleported elsewhere rather than just, y'know, go to the actual location of the train, makes less sense. #Magicmakesnodamnsense!

Fascinating episode! You do, however, assume that the wall is an actual wall. I'm not sure that's true. Given that Dobby is able to temporarily seal the entrance in the second book, I've always imagined it consisting of 2 parts: an actual portal of some kind and an illusion to make it look like a brick wall. The portal could then be pretty much everything that would work and be activated or deactivated depending on who is trying to pass through - a protective field (such as those conjured up to protect Hogwarts in book 7 or in fantastic beasts 1 to keep muggles away from the battle), a mechanism of moving elements (like the entrance to Diagon Alley or the doors of a regular muggle elevator) or even a simple, boring old door manned by a stressed employee of whoever runs the Hogwarts express who has to open it to wizards but not to muggles.

So rarely does one find a nerd who nerds as well as you, who is also really good at presentation and comedy. And you ain't too hard on the eyes, either. You should make a serious run at Hollywood. hey Kyle . The temperature of the sun's core is 15 million kelvin ( u were precise there) but the heat produced by the sun is majorly by nuclear fusion of the hydrogen molecules (hydrogen atoms fuse at 13 million kelvin) . The reaction:- four hydrogen nuclei fuse to form helium nucleus with a release of 26.7 mega-electron volts of energy. However the helium nuclei fuse at 100 million kelvin....soo there the phasing might apply

When you think about it, two people probably HAVE shuffled cards into the same order because it's not quite possible to shuffle into just any order from a riffle shuffle if the deck is already in order. For example, with the ace of spades on bottom, one riffle obviously can't get it anywhere near the top unless you let the other half of the deck mostly fall to the table without shuffling it, and no one shuffles like that. If you only take into consideration the range of slightly different ways people do the same type of shuffle while the deck is in standard order, you'd probably get a pretty high chance of people shuffling into the same order. You only have to consider things like pressure on the cards, the time between each hand starting to let go of the cards, the varying friction of people's skin on the cards, and the brand of cards.

Hey Kyle nice video, I came up with a few other explanations of how they (wizards (not us mogles) ) can phase trough the wall: 1) there is no wall, only a hologram. 2) I know that I don’t know what I am talking about but If we can’t phase trough the wall can’t the wall phase trough us? 3) it’s not phasing but teleportation because if you look carefully there is no place for an extra platform in the wall, unless you phase trough the floor. 4) using magic (because they can) they could change the property of the wall, for example they could make it out of solid liquid, so it feels like your walking trough dry and opaque water that does not flow, BECAUSE MAGIC ........

This also leaves out that, while quantum tunneling, instead of going to the opposite side of the column the wizards and witches are tunneling to an alternate "pocket" universe where Platform 9 3/4 exists and has tracks leading to Hogwarts where, again, cloaking fields shield the school from electronic and flyover observation (another pocket universe?)

Newt Scamander did say in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" that wizards and muggles have subtly different physiologies. he doesn't say how they are different, but seeing as wizards can use magic and apperate in an instant from one place to another, it's easy to see how they can quantum tunnel through a wall on a twice annual basis.

Probability manipulation means you could literally do anything. For example, there is a nonzero chance that your couch will suddenly turn into solid gold, just extremely unlikely. It's also possible that you could suddenly appear lightyears away, just equally unlikely. Or, it's possible that particles can just happen to randomly move in a way for the rest of your life that whenever you act like you're using the force, it actually works. Probability manipulation really equals god mode.

Hey Kyle, What if the «portal» is not a portal at all? What if it’s like the Tardis in dr. Who? As you stated back in that ask Kyle episode: it works if you think of it like a 2D square, which you then cut out a circle from and substitute with a sphere.. you would then end up with a bigger internal volume then the pillar in it self would have in surface area? Hopefully I remember this correctly.. Btw BIG FAN and stay amazing, Kyle! 😁

Jenna Broadway well, not if it opens to a wizard/witch.. this is magic we’re talking ‘bout here 😅 and since there is no one that notices that Ron goes through the portal maybe every muggle close to that area is being bombarded with some sort of magic that doesn’t let them see or hear any magic people near that pillar.. and maybe the same magic prevents anybody from leaning towards it? Idk.. just a thought I had since I recently rewatched every episode back2back 😅

I think it would be more of portal magic because the columns have to be a certain width in order to hold up the mass of whatever is above it. Which means that this structure is very unstable. But you could use two high end holographic displays to show an image on both sides with a textured barrier, akin to brick . Once a wizard gets close to the column, the barrier moves out of the way silently so people can pass through the "wall". There must also be a hatch that immediately transports the stuff and people down to the platform as the columns dimensions aren't big enough to acommadate a person and a cart inside of it

"accomplishable with real-world science" I feel I must amend this with 'currently', as flight, space travel, microscopic imaging, and nanoscopic teleportation were all impossible until recently. Thank you Kyle for readdressing quantum mechanics. It finally helped me begin to actually wrap my head around the concept, especially with your flash drive segment. I may not understand it 100%, but far more than before with The Vision episode. However, it gave rise to two new questions. 1. If quantum mechanics was possible for a human sized object, how would it appear to our eyes? Would it look like they are “phasing” through the wall like we’re made to believe like with Vision or Kitty Pride, or would it appear like they pop on the other side almost like “teleporting”. 2. If there was some way for a human sized object to make all their molecules or protons and electrons almost behave individually so they are much smaller and have a better chance at quantum tunneling, would that be more scientifically accurate to explain how a “super hero” could pass through objects? And with that, if your hand touched a wall would it sever from your arm and appear on the other side, or wait for the rest of you to catch up and appear as a whole?

Hi Kyle, I really love your videos! I think the question of whether a muggle can enter platform 9 3/4 has already been answered in the Harry Potter books? In the Deathly Hallows during Snape's memories, we see Lily's parents (who are muggles) standing on platform 9 3/4 "enjoying the magic atmosphere" (I think that's the quote). Therefore if they're standing on the platform to see Lily off, then they have already passed through the barrier. But thanks for applying physics to it!

Anyone could pass through as there wasn't really a wall there but the spell or device told your brain to ignore it like it does so much other sensory input and your brain is so happy to not have to process what lies beyond the wall. If not then you would simply phase to the other side of the wall you just went through at King's Cross.

I'd kinda say that, as the endpoint - where the train is, is probably not on the other side of the wall. So the wall is some sort of portal. Which, if I understand thing correctly, does not involve tunneling, more matter transportation, which involves quite different math (star trek transporters)
