The reason to leave mutineers bound on an island is to leave them to die slowly. Therefore, if you believe they will be dead soon, then you will have macabre warning signs to ward off others before long, making your buried treasure even safer.

@KillerTruffle4 жыл бұрын
@X-Ray Crystallography My problem was less the pirates being shown tied to trees (although that threw me slightly at first), but more the fact that even when a tree is directly behind another tree, you can still see parts of that other tree at minimum - leaves, branches, etc. Also, assuming these are palm trees, not only would the leaves be incredibly easier to see sticking out from behind the trunk of the closer tree, but each tree has a curvature, which would cause the trees themselves to be visible from behind for at least some of the pirates. For this riddle to work correctly, it needs to be explicitly clear as one of the parameters that when a tree is directly in line with another tree, it is in no way visible - even its leaves. Without this piece of information, the riddle really isn't solvable since it's not a logical assumption based on reality and perspective. (I'm not saying I disbelieve you solved the riddle - it just means you made the assumption regarding the trees that I didn't, and it's not necessarily a logical assumption to make.)

You guys made a HUGE mistake. You said the pirates were tied down, and then said the only thing on the island was trees. That means all the pirates were tied to trees. A pirate not tied to a tree could just wiggle around the island as he wished. Then compounded this problem by showing the pirates tied to trees in the animation. I wondered why this riddle was unsolvable. I realized early on that the pirate that saw only 2 trees had to have his view overlapped by the other trees. But if he in turn is not tied to a tree, he is not tied down.
@cheetor186 жыл бұрын

Hold on..... the illustration of the pirates being tied up to a tree would be confusing because it would mean that the person that sees 2 trees would actually see 1 tree and they are bound to another tree making the riddle impossible. I get what is being projected in the end but it would be much better if an illustration of them tied up under the sand is illustrated. Anyways, good riddle just contradicting illustrations.
@Gukslaven6 жыл бұрын
Edbert Mawlin Agree, I just wasted my time with this one. I assumed they were tied, which makes it impossible. In fact if they weren't tied, when did they see their trees? Did they get washed off, take one last look each, and then were washed into the ocean?? Seriously poorly presented riddle.
@Stratelier6 жыл бұрын
We can probably assume that should any pirate be tied up _to_ a tree they would be able to see that tree in addition to any others they can spy from their vantage point. So the solution actually still holds.
@Gukslaven6 жыл бұрын
Stratelier I don't think so: using the solution at 3:37, every pirate needs to be at a specific place, and none of them are tied to a tree.
@Stratelier6 жыл бұрын
Using the example shown at @3:24 it is easy to find locations where a pirate could be tied up against a tree and see only 3,4,5,6 trees (including the one he's tied to). For example, a pirate tied to the southern side of the lower tree along the left 'line' can only see five trees, while a pirate tied to the western edge of the left tree along the bottom 'line' can only see three. As for the pirate who can only see two trees, again this requires that the six trees must form two intersecting lines, but if he were tied up to one of the trees in question this would simply mean that his tree is located approximately at the intersect point too. So for the example around @3:35, imagine taking the 'two' pirate and tying him to the south side of the tree along his left line, while the three trees on the other line are in a different arrangement such that he is collinear with all of them (and thus only sees one). The solution isn't about finding an exact layout of trees on a given island, but to figure out a generic property that can be used to rule out islands that _aren't_ the one we're looking for. And yes, this isn't the obvious connotation of how the original question was phrased.
@Gukslaven6 жыл бұрын
Stratelier Very good explanation - though I did consider that a pirate might not be able to see behind him when tied, however at the pause screen (1:23) they say "they could look all around" which to me meant a 360 degree view, which I can imagine if the tree is thin. Anyway, I would agree it is a good problem if they updated the pause screen with "but cannot see behind himself".

As Zpinn already said, the goal wasn't to find an actual island, but to find a description of what the island looks like. I'd also like to note that they made very clear rules at 1:25. The actual answer did not contain any information that came from thin air. (The actual answer was an island with either two lines with 3 trees or an island with one line of 4 trees and another line of 2 trees)

If one of the summary points is that "they can look around but not move" please draw a picture of the pirates tied up where that's actually true or mention it in the spoken text. The solution also doesn't work with palm trees because of their shape, you should have used something like cyprus trees or easter island heads instead (or made the island look huge). This riddle is fairly easy if you skip straight to the written text and stupidly hard if you try to get the information out of the description before it.

This was rather easy to solve, but it should have been put clearly enough that the trees are able to fully block one another, because it's otherwise logical to presume that at least the crowns of trees would be visible one behind the other, since they are of equal height, therefore making their crowns appear lower the further they are (from the ground level, of course).
@bankasai31205 жыл бұрын
I paused the video at 1:27 and decided to solve the riddle. Here is my answer. If I’m correct, then the pirate who saw 2 trees must have been on an island with the trees all lined up in a row. From where he sat, it would look there were only two trees, because the other trees were obscured by the trees in front of him. This means that wherever these two lines of trees intersect, would be where the treasure lies.

I might be mistaken, but I think most of them aren't ambiguous at all if you carefully read the rules. This one wasn't, the rules stated that the pirates could see everything around them. And this one was also the first one I actually solved. Altough I tried to do it in my head and couldn't really imagine how the pirates could be placed so that they would only see 3, 4 or 5 trees. I came up with the 2 line solution nonetheless.

Here's another solution assuming that the pirates are tied to the trees: the 6 trees are situated in a slight arc pattern, and the pirates are tied to the trees so they're facing slightly toward the outside of the arc. Thus the pirates can only see the trees in front of them and the tree that they're tied to (they can look up and see the tree). They can't see the trees behind them because of the angle that they're facing and the tree they're tied to blocks their view.
@gifgoldblum79404 жыл бұрын
Guys, the rules were typed out before the solution. If the pirates were tied to the trees, it would have said so. Plus, at 0:26 there's a pirate who's not tied to a tree, so don't blame the cartoon, blame your incorrect presumptions.

Shouldn't have shown pirates tied to the trees. Kinda screws up the final formation.

Yes, Daniel, ANY 2 and 4-tree Vee will work, no matter what the size of the island is, because there will be one and only one spot from which only two trees can be seen, there will be two and only two spots from which only three trees can be seen, and there will be three and only three spots from which only four trees can be seen. How many spots there are from which only five trees can be seen depends on how far apart the trees are from each other in each of the two lines, and then how large the island is relative to those distances. In any event, it's a finite number. What is not true, however, is that ANY 3 and 3-tree Vee will work. As you can discern just from assessing the frame at 3:11 -- there's no spot where one possibly could stand and see only three trees. And even when irregular spacing does combine with sufficient room to make such a thing possible -- such as what you model at frame 3:31 -- this amounts to a complete one-off type situation, and not just one where you can say that "as long as there's a point of convergence." Many and in fact most 3 and 3-tree Vees would not work, while there are no occasions where a 2 and 4-tree Vee would NOT work, so long as the point of convergence is on land.

I love these riddles, People who can't solve these riddles can casually watch them to learn a thing, While people who can, can use these riddles as a test of their mettle.

A tree doesn't have the exact same shape as a different tree, you could still see two trees even if they were on the same line of sight. Even if hypothetically all trees had identical shape (and even if you ignored the wind and the fact that the pirates can just slightly move their necks), it still wouldn't work since it would only make it seem like one tree from one line of sight, it would still look like multiple trees from other POVs. Also if they weren't tied to the trees and there's nothing else on the island, were they just tied down to sand?

Well I could've solved this if I had some sort of list of the islands or if the task was to draw an island that coukd work, but as it is now some information is missing, you can't tell at the end "Since there's only one island with two non-parallel..." WELL HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?

At the beggining you say the pirates are tied to trees, so this solution can not be right, every pirate would also see 1 more tree where the other pirates are tied.
@jeconiahjoelmichaelsiregar79176 жыл бұрын
Wrong. If they had been tied to the trees they wouldn't have been washed to sea. Besides at 0:29 notice how none of the ropes are tied to the trees AND there's one pirate not tied to a tree. TED-Ed simply said the pirates were tied down, not tied to a tree.
@zayaray9995 жыл бұрын
I would like to point out the fact that at 0:27 it shows 3 pirates tied to trees. If they showed that the pirates were not bound so closely to trees... I still doubt that I would've been able to solve this. But with them being tied to trees (or so I thought) I raised the question (only from the theory where they are ACTUALLY TIED TO TREES) that one of them could not see 6 trees from being already bound to one. My solution to the problem (still the one where they are tied to trees) is to find the island with a total of 7 trees and not just six. Needless to say the answer was wrong because THE FLIBBIN PIRATES WERE NOT TIED UP TO THE TREES IN THE FIRST PLACE. I might have wasted my time overthinking all of what the question was asking but now I'm just wasting my time writing this.
@hilopeople5946 жыл бұрын
But it said they were tied to trees. So if a pirate saw 6 trees, they probably wouldn't count the one they're tied to unless if their front perspective, could only see at most 5 trees in front of them. So, technically, that island where you found the treasure, the crew would have to be tied up to something else. So the crew would have to be lying. But if they lied about that, they could lie about giving you the treasure. And now I'm criticizing the logic of Ted-Ed videos. What has my life come to?

I found the solution by scratching the possible island, i actually made the same exact island as 3:31 but rotated about 270°. I guess i solved it :/
