After months of travel, you’ve arrived at Duonia, home to the famous temple that’s the destination of your pilgrimage. The walk from the welcome center to the temple isn't a long one ... but there’s a problem. Can you outsmart the city's imposed tax and make it to the temple without paying a fee? Daniel Finkel shows how.

@@Graham226 I don't know what kind of spreadsheet you used but that is just overcomplicating things, this is a simple "draw a line on the grid" task that is best done with a pen and grid paper if you really want to confirm how my route goes. I start where the pilgrim is at the start of the problem, at the middle of the top street. You must have misunderstood my instructions in the original comment, because after the third step the pilgrim isn't even near the destination. She hasn't even gone to right once, which would be required to get there. After the fourth step she in turn is very close to the destination, just one street above it. If you still disagree, I can draw you a demonstration of how my route is supposed to look.

The pilgrim can even save 4 silver for a big meal after visiting the temple. Simply instead of going three blocks south, go two block south (16), one west (14), one south (28), three east (34 instead of 36). Then as in the official solution: to the northern wall (4.25 instead of 4.5), one west (2.25), one south (4.5). Then to the eastern wall (-1.5 instead of -1), south (-12) and to the temple (-4).

So inefficient. 1 loop of that is 4 walking units and earns you 1 silver. Instead bring enough silver to declare the northeast corner as your destination (which is at most 8 silver, assuming you live in the gate), then walk in a gigantic loop passing the gate, then the temple in that order over and over again. It takes 16 walking units, but earns you 127 silver, for a net of 16.9375 silver per walking unit, as opposed to 0.25. A 6675% increase in profit margins. Even if walking from 1 walking unit is 1 hour, it is still more efficient to go 2 blocks each, than 1 block. 8 walking units, assuming the space to fit it in, 16 gained on the downswing, and then a cost of 1 on the upswing, for a net of 15, or 1.875 per hour, a 650% increase, and I am not convinced it is 1 hour to walk that distance. Assuming that the pilgrim cannot sleep outside, and that she walked the entire day from the moment she walked up, 22 walking units were covered. At worst, that is a rate of 1.375 walking units per hour assuming a 16 hour walking day, but assuming an 8 hour walking day, that is 2.75, or 2 full loops, and a maximum of 3 walking units away from the northeast corner. Given a distance further than that, you might have to resort to a smaller loop on your second pass, but anything is more efficient than walking around a single block.

yep that's well known phenomenon on graphs: sometimes, if you consider edges with negative weight and there are loops in your graph, you might end up with a path that gives you arbitrarily large negative final values an algorithm that can be used to detect these loops is the Bellman-Ford algorithm, which can be implemented to profit on top of arbitrage

I would reckon that most of these riddles were made where the question was already known as well as the answer, and then it was wrapped up into a "scenario" as shown here so it could be nicely animated. So in that sense they could all be considered "contrived", unless they found a riddle and took it as is.

Interesting. I found a more complicated alternative solution in which you go a bit more West before doing looping around. Still was able to cut enough corners that it ended with 0. I could’ve even ended with a profit at the temple if it wasn’t against the rules.

You can actually gain some silver by the time you reach the temple if instead of continuing downwards from the centermost intersection, you took a detour left 1 block, down 1 block, and continued along the path to the right 1 block. Your money would change over this path to these numbers: 4, 8, 16, 14, 28, 30, 32, 34, 17, 8.5, 4.25, 2.25, 4.5, 2.5, 0.5, -1.5, -3, -6, -12, -10, -8, -6, -4, leaving you with 4 silver owed to you by the end of the trip.

I can find better anwser. From the start(4): Go 2 left(0), 1 down(0), 4 right(8), 2 up(2), 1 left(0), 1 down(0), 2 left(-4), 3 down(-32) and finaly 3 left(-26). So, goverment have to give us 26 coins.

Since it's counter intuitive to permute ways by varying all the possible paths, let's backtrack from the destination and leave little room for permutations, if you start by assuming you'd use the lowest row to reach the temple, then you can determine that on block (1,2) you'd need to owe a total of -1 silver. Now with the problem reduced to reaching (1,2) with an amount -1, the same concept can be used to backtrack it all the way to the beginning and you have a path. Though honestly I didn't think about it in terms of a counter clockwise loop earning me one silver.
