Actually I once did a side by side comparison for someone of a Rolex and a clone, and they weighed the same. The balance wheel is the giveaway. It’s incredibly difficult to set up the hair spring with the exact tension so they install one that they can adjust on a time grapher instead. Rolex has a special jig where they can practically stamp out their hair springs and adjust them before they are installed. +3/-5 seconds a day very consistently. Whereas even the best fakes would be out as much as a minute or more per day if they did the same thing so they us slightly older and more reliable balance springs and nearly equal the accuracy and occasionally even rival it, (stacking tolerances are a real bear and even Rolex has to swap out their balance springs between watches if they fall out of that range. (They have a box of plus and minus hair springs and can simply swap and immediately re-test the combo within minutes). It’s still tedious and not at all an easy task but it’s the way they’ve decided to do their movements now. I’ve heard that if your watch is serviced outside of a dealership these hair springs can be messed up if sent through a washing machine so you’ll have to reorder a replacement part because it requires a large undertaking and understanding to adjust the accuracy. (It’s a way they can control repair).

if it's fake intended to rip somebody off, it's likely going to fall apart within a year, and be off by 20 seconds a day... you have hommage watches from brands like Steinhart, they sell you the same looking watch for 600 dollar with a swiss cheap ETA movement, that will last you many years and only be off by 5 seconds a day...

Something I've always considered ironic is the most accurate mechanical time piece I own is an old Seiko 5 I wore to work everyday for years and beat to hell. It'll usually keep time within +/-2 minutes for 4 or 5 days. That's out of an Omega, a couple of Orients, and a Bulova Automatic. But so many things can affect them severely. Leaving it in the wrong orientation, exposing it to great temperature changes, introducing it to an electrical charge, working in an environment where it is jostled a lot etc. All things that can throw it off by minutes or hours within short order. If I needed a time piece I would depend on my G Shock. It's solar powered, and even without being connected to the Colorado atomic clock, it'll keep within 10 seconds per year.

Its a watch. It tells the time. I bought a fake Rolex from Dubai in 2006. The thing is amazing, works flawlessly and is incredibly well engineered. I have compared it with my friends real one, and it's identical in every way. If you have to break it apart into pieces to tell the difference, the real one is no longer worth what Rolex are asking.
