It probably doesn't "just" stop in the middle of the road. It would most likely use its sensors to detect if any cars were near before slowing down. If not, that's a huge oversight considering they made their seats really comfortable and road noise isn't as loud as you would think for a car with no engine.

If the autopilot gets blocked (which happens if you don't hold the steering wheel when the warning pops up three times), it is unavailable until you end the driving session and _put_ _the_ _car_ _in_ _park_ . It'll be available when you start driving again after that. So the punishment is as you said not very strong.

I mean, sure, being told what to do by your own car isn't everyone's cup of tea... but the only reason the car does that in the first place is because the driver either falls asleep, is distracted, has a heart attack, etc, etc In ther words, the car stopped because it was not a danger to road safety. Now, like what was said in the vídeo, i'd rather it stop outside the road, instead of right in the middle of it, but it's still safer than just having someone distracted on their phone or something else (runaway car) At least this way, it's stopped and it's not up to the other drivers to assist the driver.

Hey, @Zack. If, the auto-drive stops working on you. All you have to do is to get out of the car, close the door and walk away some. Once you get back in, it'll work for you again.

As a first responder I love that it leaves the car with the hazards going at least. Being in the middle of the road would certainly bring a lot of attention that the person is in need of assistance for example of a seizure, stroke, heart attack etc. That's some timely stuff. Punishing someone for having an event is a bad idea. Now they can "go off" again and not have auto pilots help the next time.

Its not that its legal in those 3 states, its that its not illegal. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, "47 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands ban text messaging for all drivers. Missouri prohibits text messaging by novice or teen drivers." The three states are Arizona, Missouri and Montana that do not have a law making it illegal to text and drive with Missouri making it illegal for drivers 21 years or younger.

3 years late on this post, but... If you are having a heart attack and the car pulls over on the side of the road, you will be totally ignored. If it stops IN the road, people will either call the police or check on you (admittedly, probably to yell, but you will still get attention). This might not be a bad feature (unless you get rear-ended).

If the law says it is illegal to text and drive then it is illegal. There is no sub paragraph that has an exclusion for a self driving car. The problem is the driver is responsible AT ALL TIMES FOR THE SAFE OPERATION OF THAT CAR. That means even while you are texting. Oops…..By the way that is also why you still need auto insurance. If it was truly self driving then they would be responsible for the safe operation of the car. And heck no company wants that liability. So therefore yes it is illegal to text and drive your self driving car. And your insurance will go up if you get caught and ticketed.

Jerry, you said that you were disappointed that it didn't pull over to the side if you had a heart attack. TRUST ME if you have a heart attack and pull to the side, NO one will stop and help you. but if you block the traffic even for a minute (even few secs) people will come to check on you in Angre see that you need help and help you!. so that's a good thing that the car stops in the middle of the road.
