Anthony Nickerson like Zephyr said, there's not a backlight it's just that the AMOLED panel probably cracked underneath the glass. Same thing happened with my normal S6 after it fell face down from about 5 feet (for some reason I tried to catch a football with it in my hand). It was kind of a good thing because it had some random restarting problems which I think might have been caused by water damage a few months back. Luckily my insurance kept sending me crappy refurbished phones which I kept returning until last month they ran out of Galaxy S6s and they sent me a non refurbished S8. I guess it all payed off after all.

Lol the first phone I ever broke finally happened when I got the s8+ as soon as it came out. I ordered a case online and got way too comfortable with it while I waited. I had music playing while doing some roof repair for a customer on a two story roof. All of the sudden the music gets quiet. Still there, just faint. My heart sank as I peered over the side of the roof. There was my 3 day old s8 laying on the concrete patio. Needless to say, I learned how insurance claims worked after that.

I live in Australia and Samsung are currently trialling a service here where they do a one day turn around for phone repairs. For example, if you break the screen and then drop it off at a certified place, it gets picked up, repaired and dropped off for you to pick back up the day after. I know someone who works in that process and they have said that the most dropped off phone is the s8 series because of the glass. It's thin and there are way too many points of contact where it can break (even with a case).

Thanks for asking. My story began on my daily bike commute back home from my graveyard shift at the social detox in my old town. My practice was to ride the 5 miles home, have a snack & go to sleep. I placed my workday at the end of my day. Although I was living in a small town, traffic still demands your attention. This is particularly true of bikeriders. I had to navigate a tricky & quite busy intersection. It included an on/off ramp to the interstate. Light, a left turn green one, was going to change soon. I had the timing down, so hit it. As all bikeriders know, a car driver can look you in the face, eye contact, will even nod at you, when they suddenly notice they are heading right at you. I try to watch for that in my own driving. I was in the left scramble lane approaching the intersection when from the right, from the off ramp, squirrels out a car, running their light. In their defense, it is a long light. I had to swerve hard. The cardriver flipped me off, of course. I also try to watch out for that in my own driving. That was when I realized, the noise I heard was my phone sacrificing itself to save my life. It jumped out of my pocket and slid in front of the oncoming car that I was trying to beat through the intersection. The phone sacrificed itself trying to hold it back, saving my life. After the lights changed up, I walked back to through the intersection to pick up its valent remains. I’ll name my next child Nokia.

I had a Blackberry Storm 2. This was back in the day when those leather belt pouch things were all the rage. I pulled it out of the belt pouch, went to look at it, dropped it face first from about waist height, screen down. When I went to pick it up, the whole screen fell out. Thankfully it still worked after that.

I have never fully broken a phone. I have put a few decently large cracks into my screen protector, and my case is pretty beaten up and completely cracked in one corner, but the phone was not affected at all.

I don't have a tendency to break phones but one day I fell off my cycle and the phone in my pocket got hurt. Luckily the phone didn't get any ailments like shattered screen, loss in sensitivity of the screen, but battery backup has started to slowly fall down and the slow down process grew exponentially, which is astonishing.

So, i dropped an iPhone 5, and the front glass just popped. Apart from the sides, it wasn't noticeable at all (if you turned it, you could see the LEDs that are inside the phone), and the phone got deeper grooves at a level 7.

Daniel Watson I am also really careful with my phones, but accidents happen. One day I came back home pretty tired and was taking a shower. I forgot I left my phone in my pants' pocket so when I picked them up after the shower, phone fell out of the pocket, hit the floor and the screen broke exactly in half - on one of which the touch just stopped working

I’ve gotten a new flagship every year since 2014 and never broken one once. I think the difference is when you have to work for months to save money you tend to be super careful. Or I do at least, I do know people who are broke though and have bought phones outright and broke them within a month so I guess it’s really about the individual.

Marko Tuka I have broken a phone but don’t think it was *my* fault. I bought a refurbished phone and the battery maybe had some problems, so I drop it on my hard flooring about a meter from it. It hits the ground, I check for cracks and leave to work. On the way there I turn my phone on and it says 64% and as soon as it hits 63% it turns off and flashes some lights then back on to where it says 63% and then it dies at 62%. I think the battery was fucked up to where it could barely hold a charge but the iPhone still thought I had a battery percentage resulting in it dying every 1%

I’ve broken like ALOT of phones but the saddest experience was when I had an iPhone 4, I woke up and decided I didn’t want it in a case just for that day to see if I could survive without it, about ten minutes later I come walking downstairs and it slips out my hand on the last step onto the wooden floor face down and the whole screen was shattered and the LCD was white, it was a sad day and now I can never use a phone without a case. It was traumatic.

Last time I “broke” a phone was my iPhone 6. It wasn’t visually damaged at all, but a lot of things internally broke. I used to throw it across rooms and everything, eventually the battery life was so bad, the Bluetooth antenna stopped receiving signals over 0.5 metres away from the phone, and wifi was on and off working, and mobile data was weak. I did have a lifeproof brand case on it, and as I said I would throw it across rooms and drop it all the time and it kept fighting for my 2-3 years of using it
