The nest can be a good option as a baby monitor depending on 2 things… 1) layout of your home and therefore monitoring needs and 2) existing investment in the nest eco system. We had a vtech video monitor that bit the dust after 2 months. We already have one nest hub on our main floor so decided to give the nest cam a try since it’s way cheaper than a baby monitor and we only really used the camera/audio on our last monitor and none of the baby centered features. We don’t need a monitor at night because the door to our baby’s room is literally right next to ours so we can hear everything and before now he was sleeping in our room. The nest cam has been working perfectly for us and even with buying an extra google hub for our family room is half the cost of nanit, plus we get monitoring screens outside of our phones.
@johnrhernandez23423 жыл бұрын
I've been using the nest camera for 3 years as a baby monitor, The only draw back I see is the price tag. You do not need background audio when you have the app alerting you of motion. You can also access the camera feed remotely. All you have to do is open up the phone on your app when you receive the alert. You can also just open up any device that can run a browser or the app and you can have your "continuous background audio." There is no missing key feature and its absolutely not crucial.
@tannazafshar51072 жыл бұрын
are the notifications loud enough for overnight sleep? how do you alerted overnight?
@johnrhernandez23422 жыл бұрын
@@tannazafshar5107 It is plenty loud enough for me at night. I turn my phone up volume max and I block other app notification. And if I am too far away. I open up the browser on my laptop or desktop and of course with all the different options of bluetooth and wired desktop speakers, getting alerted will not be a problem if you already have those extra resources.

An easy work around for the background audio issue is to get a supplemental audio monitor. Can also travel with it too. The combo Nest and audio monitor is still cheaper than the Nanit and comparables but with a crucial point--added security. The Nest cam has never been hacked, however several reports of Nanit and others hacked (happed to a friend of mine).
@TubeSwarn Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Most of the budget and mid range baby monitors are trash. They will not even last one year. These security monitors like nest or blink or ring are pretty reliable. Paired with simple simple audio monitors which will cost you $30 bucks is a good alternative and way cheaper and reliable. Once your baby grows older you can still use your security system.

Along with all of the comments indicating that the notifications letting you know to look in and see what's going on, you can also get a smart screen like the nest home hub and have it dedicated to the cam feed and problem solved if this is truly a non starter for you. This is personal preference though for sure and the tech as is works great as a baby monitor.

This is the ideal solution for my apartment-with-audiophone-and-doorbel-camera-problem. I life in a apartment with an audiophone to let people downstairs. I have a netatmo cameradoorbell upstairs but offcourse this is kind of worthless when you take into consideration I still can’t remotely open the door downstairs when I’m not home. What I did is the following; my Google nest cam detects the sound as soon as someone rings the audiophone, this sends a message to IFTTT, wich triggers a Switchbot Bot button ON the audiophone To open the door. Then when the visitor is up they ring my netatmo doorbell, wich triggers my NUKI smartlock and opens the door.. just tell me I’m a genius

The logic of not having or not wanting to have an independent parent monitor, regardless if it came with the camera or if it’s like an old iPad, because it’s too many things to carry around, assumes that you don’t use for phone for anything else besides monitoring your child. Why would someone shut off their communication to the world to run a baby monitor over night, when I could just use a separate monitor. And if that logic assumes they can be reached by xy or z method, then they start to assume that people know what they do and should reach out by xy or z method instead. Moral of this story is use a separate primary parent monitor rather than your phone because unless you want to lock up your phone during those times, you wouldn’t want to go that route.
