I've found that the Raid Bosses have what I call "HP Walls" where you CANNOT do damage past those HP Walls until you reach them. The walls are what allow them to set up shields. But once those shields are up, you can hit hard enough to reach the next wall or KO them.

Onto a Gigantamax target it exceeds the maximum permitted parameters for the move to work, the result is the Pokémon shakes head and refuses to use the move because your Pokémon and with it the sword and shield games do not know what a damage calculation is based on weight for a gigantic target (defined as the dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon of these games) so a calculation doesn’t work on oversized targets because the people behind the games chose not to set specialized programming to modify weight limits these moves can do, so the way to manage it is to stop them working altogether All hold items stop working, your not allowed to hold anything when engaged with the raid, these Pokémon types do not know what the held item mechanic is, they’re oversized so it wouldn’t work anyway. If they can’t, you can’t hold anything either

Just in case you didn’t know heat crash and heavy slam both do damage depending on how much heavier you are than the opponent so I’m guessing you can’t use moves like those on dynamax pokemon because they’re too heavy.

goOf it’s not allowed for all weight based moves at all with this battle type, do not use these as they all stop working. You can know them normally and use them in normal battle situations, but with a max raid battle they will do nothing and are not allowed because these are often too heavy or big for the move to carry out any effect if at all

@Joshua Young If everyone brings Dittos to a Ditto raid, your team will eventually lose when you're forced to Struggle. Transform will fail every turn. The raid bosses do not have PP so they will never Struggle, and you'll lose every time.

What I usually do is just let them "hug" me, and then I flee the battle so that they vanish from the field, and then I can have time to focus on the den itself. (8:29) That's neat that 1-hit KO moves break two barriers if the shield is up, but it's unfortunate that they otherwise don't deal damage. Also, do 1-hit KO moves still have to pass the accuracy check to strike the barriers? I mean, if it's a guaranteed hit on the barriers, it might be worth having a 1-hit KO move available just for that, but if they still have to deal with the low accuracy, then they're probably not worth it. (9:38) Yeah, what's with that Magikarp often showing up? At least it somehow knows Hydro Pump, but still... Just for anyone curious about Imposter Ditto: If your Imposter triggers on a Gigantamax Pokemon, your Ditto will only be able to Dynamax as the base Pokemon it copied. You can't steal G-Max moves (Although I am curious to see what Mimic would do against Max and G-Max moves). Also I'd personally advise against using Ditto to use other Pokemon's signature moves since the game outputs move animations based on the Pokemon itself, not the model the Pokemon is using, making most signature moves look weird (e.g. Zacian's Behemoth Blade keeps the Transformed Ditto's model in a T-pose and makes it clip under invisible terrain during the animation, rather than just duplicating what it would do with an actual Zacian. Eternatus's Dynamax Cannon looks like a glorified Hyper Beam when used from a Transformed Ditto, rather than coming out of its chest in the real animation).

Obi-Wan Kenobi you aren’t allowed to do that in a max raid battle, the game won’t let you, the raid boss won’t let you either as the weight exceeds the maximum damage parameters the move can deal normally. So it’s easier for gamefreak to ban use of them on a raid boss, so if you have any Pokémon knowing these kinds of moves they aren’t allowed there in that situation

I'll test it. I'll update in 5 minutes. Edit: It actually did work. My Runerigus cut its own HP and the game said I put a curse on the enemy. It did about 1/16 of the enemy's health. Pretty decent deal actually. It also goes through that annoying barrier higher-ranked Dynamax Pokémon set up after taking enough damage.

10:12 to be fair, other moves based on weight such as Low Kick or Grass Knot are tactically aimed at the Pokémon’s feet to trip them, so if you can’t tell where the Pokemon is based off of the illusion you can’t trip them up.

I only have two gripes about this One. It's not fair that the pokemon AI can attack 6 times in one turn and that it puts up a stupid sheild and you bearly even damage it. Two, it's cheap and that the ai pokemon can change everyone's status and that it goes before you 3 times before you get to attack. And that your team sucks ass. This is broken even if you use broken moves on a raid. Visa versa.

Gamefreak didn't put much consideration into AI teammates. But at least if you manage to take down the raid Pokemon (when your playing with AI no players) you have a 100% catch rate.

Also another fun fact, it's hard coded to be impossible to beat an entire 5 star raid in a single turn. Each 5 star raid has 2 barriers, and the second barrier is locked to that it can't activate on the first turn, even if you're fighting the type of raid that starts with the first barrier already active. If you do manage to get to that point in it's HP, it just becomes impervious to all attacks for the rest of the turn. The other attacks don't even register as hits on the barrier. Then when the next turn starts, the first thing the boss does is activate the second barrier, even if it wasn't hit yet on that turn. It's kinda really stupid. I know this because my discord friends and I went out of our way to try to one-turn a 5 star and spent the last week coming up with strats and we made it that far, but it still didn't work. However, there's one specific 5 star Raid boss that you can not only beat in one turn, but you can straight up one-shot. And that's Shedinja. For.... For obvious reasons.

The reason damage is weird with raid battles is that the max pokemon's health is actually broken up into multiple segments (Not that the game ever tells you that). This means that even if an attack should do a ton of damage, if it hits one of those invisible segments, the damage will stop and the boss will put its shield up.

Heavy Slam causes damage based on the weight difference between the user and the target but the user has to be heavier, like an Aagron. If you're using Heavy Slam on a gigantic Pokémon, it will naturally fail. What you needed was Low Sweep, which causes damage based on the TARGET's weight, not yours. The heavier the target, the more damage it causes. It's a great move to use against Red's Snorlax in Gen 2.

Arifin surya Destiny bond does not work. Serebii has a list of moves that are ineffective against Dynamax mons

With multi hit moves, only the first move breaks a shield segment, but the other hits still do damage (although reduced because of the shield)

If you bring a non-imposter ditto to a raid battle, you can transform into your teammate’s pokemon, too. If you don’t have an Eternatus or Zacian yet but a teammate does, you can always spend a turn copying them for more power.
