What continues to amaze me is the sound quality of such very inexpensive devices. It is a matter of microphone / device placement and technique, nine times out of ten.

Try connecting the usb mic to your pc like you normally would, and connect the headphone out of the usb mic to the line in of the zoom h1n using an Aux cable (3.5 mm to 3.5 mm).

Mixing L and R also reduces the noise, because each channel has different noise and it averages signal when combined.

Yes if you have one and not in the mood to buy a proper mic for voice (for podcast, livestream, classes, voiceover... - a cardioid mic) it can "do it" but you have to treat the audio (or "polish crap"), as this zoom gear is mainly designed as an ambient recorder, it is very sensitive and captures very detailed and loud ambient noise. If you are not using it on an acoustic isolated room and have a very very quiet PC, the recording is gonna contain very loud ambience, even stuff happening far away (car, bus passing, dogs barking, birds. etc..), your PC cooler is gonna sound like a jet engine probably...

You can also speak to just one capsule pointed at you, and discard the other capsule's signal. So in order to get mono, you don't need to mix the channels together, which sometimes creates phase issues (even though the capsules are really close together).

Thanks Julian for this video, it helps me decide what to use to record my narrations. Zoom H1n is my first dedicated audio recorder, it is intimidating to use at first but I eventually clawed it with the help of your beginners guide. Although, you don't consider this device as a pro, my narration took a giant leap of improvement when I switch from my phone to Zoom H1n.

I just ordered my H1n yesterday. As much as I'd like to support local Aussie sellers I couldn't pass up the AliExpress price. AU$60 cheaper than Aussie Amazon. About AU$120 cheaper than US Amazon. Downside is slow deliver, 20-40 days.

Arghhhh!! You said that the H1n "definitely is not my first choice for voiceover work"... but then you didn't tell us what you recommend. Can you do a video on your top voiceover equipment recommendations then? Maybe your top 3-4 including a budget option? I'm sure that there's stacks of KZbinrs, like me, that would love to hear your thoughts on that.

Be aware not all cards will work in H1n. Received kodak card with my package deal, it needed formatting every time I switched it on, which also wiped all recordings, rather inconvenient to backup to another drive before switching off. I bought SanDisk card which works fine. Apart from that, no problem with the Zoom. If you are prepared to accept that a jewel can be made from plastic, that's the H1n.

We were surprised at how good the H1n is. You can use a pop filter or save money by putting on a wind shield (dead cat) as the wind shield will work indoors and out. Once you get the setting right the H1n does a very good job. It feels a bit cheap and nasty but don't judge a book by its cover. We have also been experimenting with mics and have found that expensive microphones aren't necessary for great sound. We have a dead cheap Huxley $14 mic that we got from Aldi and we have combined that with a Scarlett Solo pre-amp. We use Audacity to capture audio for voice-over and we are getting results that seem to be as good as using a Rode Procaster (which needs a pre-amp in order to work).

Please make a review of the H1n used as Audio Interface in a DAW ( like Ableton live 10 ) for use with 64/128 samples 44khz/24bit so I can have a reference what is the latency. Nobody is doing this, i've searched everywhere. I have a small laptop of 11.6inch from 2014, intel N3530 cpu laptop with 4GB ram and want to use it with a midi keyboard on stage using some VSTs like Arturia V collection or something similar, I want to know how bad would the latency be if I used the Zoom H1n instead of the built in soundcard. The lower I go in samples the smaller the latency but the greater the risc of crackles and sound generally breaking. I know that, also I know that differs from one VST to another, depending on the CPU load it generates. Would love to see the H1n in action at least. thank you for reading through this far :)))

Thanks for the video! I am waiting for my h1n and they are really useful. Do you think a windscreen instead of a pop filter would be enough to make more or less decent voiceovers? Or would it be a huge step down from the pop filter?
@JulianKrause
@JulianKrause 5 жыл бұрын
Whether a foam cover is enough really depends on how close the mic is to you and how heavy your plosives are. I mean, a foam cover is better than nothing but a real pop filter in front of the mics is going to be even more effective.

Hey, when you have a lot of ambient noise, pretty much any mic is going to pick that up. Two things you can do: 1. Try to record in a quite space. 2. Great information! So for this voiceover application, you think it is better to combine the Left and Right into mono, rather than simply using one of the two, and deleting the other channel?
@JulianKrause
@JulianKrause 5 жыл бұрын
I would sum the left and right channels together because you are usually aiming the H1n directly at you. The mics on the H1n are in a XY configuration. For each microphone a sound source straight in front of the H1n, is at 45 degrees off axis. If you only listen to one channel it should give you more ambient noise. If you sum left and right together, they will result in a polar pattern which is on axis with the H1n. So, combining the left and right mic should result in slightly less ambient noise. Additionally combining the left and right channel will reduce the self-noise of the mics by about 3dB.

@@JulianKrause You wrote that one uses both of the two mics 45 degrees off axis as he/she aims the H1n like in the video when the whole device is directed to the mouth and this is quite true. Therefore, it would be better to use one of the two mics on axis i.e. directing that mics in the direction of the mouth and use only the corresponding channel of the stereo signal.

The Duke of MTB The Zoom H1n can do pretty much all the things the DR-10L can do. The biggest plus for the DR-10L is the small formfactor. But the H1n has the limiter. So if you would want to use a lavalier I might suggest that you buy a decent lavalier and plug it into your H1n. Just an idea...

VG

Hi, I have a zoom H1n which when connected to windows 10 does not pickup an audio signal. I had the ASIO driver updated reinstalled etc but windows or Audacity does not pic up a signal. Other USB mics work fine from the same USB port. I am also able to transfer files and the computer detects the Zoom H1n's SD card. I would appreciate any advice you can give me as DELL tech support is clueless.

Could you use it with Screencastomatic? My webcam and other devices have terrible microphones. My webcam is connected by USB for camera, I've unplugged the Webcam mic from the headphone socket. Then I've plugged in the H1n via USB but can't select it as an alternative microphone. Also if I was filming myself using my phone, could I use H1n instead of phone mic.
