I have used the Zoom H1n for many years to record lectures and found it invaluable. The only problem with the old one I found was that if I left a battery in it the battery would go flat.

My H1n turned up this morning. I’ve rewatched the tutorial as it’s the best one that I’ve found. This recorder will be with me at all times, and I will have things covered while I build up my H5 system. I’ve always suffered with GAS, the last thing that I got into was a Sony portable DAT recorder that I finally got round to buying. I also suffer from UAS (Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome) but that’s another story. Love the videos, cheers from a slightly damp U.K. 👍

The H1n still boils my blood somewhat, it seems like they completely missed the point of the original. Having a single AA is much easier to manage with the H1 compared to the 2xAAA on the H1n. H1n is larger for seemingly no reason.. and still has the same annoying 32GB card limit (no SDXC support in 2018?) I would have payed 3x the price of the H1 for the exact same physical format with SDXC support and the highest quality mics in the cage they could muster PS: H1n looks to have the dreadful MicroUSB, not the robust MiniUSB
@TheRecordist9 ай бұрын
I can’t argue with any of that. But it’s the cheapest most entry level recorder in their H series. I don’t expect them to change much for the better. But I do appreciate the gain dial as opposed to the buttons. I still find myself reaching for my old H1 more than I thought I would. But you’re right about just about everything you said.

Just got two of these, to accompany my old but trusty DR-40. I'm recording various vehicles from the cockpit with DR-40, and two H1n will record exterior sounds from the front, and rear of the vehicle. First house tests told me quite fast that H1n is simply not for recording quiet environments, preamps (or mics) are quite noisy even comparing to old DR-40, which is practically at the bottom of the field recorders noise test table. But hey, I will use them in loud environment, so I guess I made a right decision for low price, to cover multiple angles.
@TheRecordist21 күн бұрын
@@Pe11ePD hey. Yes indeed. Any Zoom H series is going to have noisy preamps. To get quiet preamps you’d have to venture into the F series. For me, I went with Sound Devices MixPre for crazy quiet preamps. But I still use the H1n for all kinds of louder recordings.
@Pe11ePD21 күн бұрын
@@TheRecordist I already got my pick at Tascam Portacapture X6. Adjustable stereo field like on my DR-40, but 32bit float up to 140db, very quiet preamps, great display. All that I wanted in a handheld recorder. I don't like chasing mics for F series etc, I'm a sucker for handheld recorders with internal mics, as they are practical for my needs, and deliver GREAT sound for the type of recordings I do. When I get my hands on X6, I can finally do really quiet ambiances.

Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.

I love your humorous, down to earth presentation. I was looking for a stereo mic for my Fuji S20 (I have the Rode Micro mono mic). I was going to get the Sennheiser, but it is pricey. I'm looking for ambient sound with travel videos. I'm now thinking about starting with the Zoom H1. Hi, I have a problem with my H1N. As soon as I turn up the gain wheel over level 6, the background noise starts to be too much. From level 7 is unacceptable! I don't understand why my H1N is so noisy compared to many other which were tested by KZbinrs in many videos.. Could It be possible that my H1N is broken? (I bought it 3 days ago). Thanks.
@TheRecordist9 ай бұрын
Hi there. Generally the H1n has noisy preamps above 5.5. I always try to keep my recordings under 5.5 on the gain wheel and then increase the gain in post. That said, I can’t hear the noise to be able to tell you. Please email me 10 seconds of your gain at 5 and 10 seconds with your gain at 6. Just silence. I’ll let you know what I think. @_stellasolitaria_9 ай бұрын
@@TheRecordist thx a lot for replying. Ok, you confirm the noisy mic/preamp. So should I stay relaxed? No worries about possible malfunctioning?!? ... really? Can I stay in 5.5 and turn up the volume in post production? Do you get an acceptable result? Thanks!
@TheRecordist9 ай бұрын
@@_stellasolitaria_ hi there. Yes. It helps to keep it under 5.5 on the gain dial. But the H1n is a noisy recorder anyway. Not as noisy as many other products but noisy by pro standards. Generally, getting closer to a source reduces noise. But to get very low noise, you’d have to get into the Zoom F-series or Sound Devices MixPre series or the like.

I've been using it for outdoor field recordings for three of years, for me it is the best, providing you don't mind syncing the audio later. Why I use this is with dead cat, unlike most others there is still a sterile area around the X-Y mics as it's design keeps the windshield/dead cat off of them. With say the H2n if the wind hits the dead cat, it comes up against solid object or barrier. With the H1N it has no solid barrier behind the dead cat.

Hey, hey, - here I am, expecting a nerd, making a nerdy review. And what do I get - a guy with practical experience, with a blessed and sofisticated sense of humor, and a guy who sings a mean overdub harmony! - thanks for 21 minutes of enjoyment ( and yes, I also learned a lot of relevant stuff)

Haha. I do not yet have a video on backpacks. I do have a couple on sound bags. But backpacks are a great idea! If you’re in the market for the absolute best audio/video backpack ever, check out the LowePro ProTactic 450 AWII: geni.us/QVScu

Audio gear is indeed special and GAS is very, very real, any new personal sound kit gets smuggled into the house then labelled as work gear if my contraband is intercepted and inspected by the old trouble and strife 😂 My little H1n doesn’t get much use these days as my work flow is now 32bit float but it did make me a Zoom user as I acquired better audio equipment. It’s great value kit 👍 Another great review 👍
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! I know all about the smuggling. 😉 I also am a 32 bit guy. I use the Sound Devices MixPre 3 II for my serious stuff. But for sound collecting (which is all the time in life), I always have the H1 handy. It’s with me daily. Thanks for watching!

In the video at 2:25, I see version: 1.21 on the screen, is there a new firmware version? My says version: 1.19, I don't a system version 1.21 on the Zoom site for this model...?
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Good eye! I don’t have an answer for you. It shipped that way. I went to see if it needed an firmware update and I found that the newest firmware had a smaller number than the one it says on my recorder. It makes no sense. It’s an error. There is no newer firmware update. You’re good. Haha.

Years ago, this was my tool of choice for my qualitative research when I was a broke grad school student. Today, it is still my tool of choice for my qualitative research now that I'm a broke postgraduate student. I must admit, when I first received it in the mail I was taken aback at how cheap, fragile and plasticky it felt.... but it is still holding up just fine now!

Hahaha. Yes indeed. It’s a cheap-ass unit but somehow keeps going! I agree. Strange!

Hello, Mr. Recordist! I'm 3:37 minutes into the video and I had to pause to tell you that you are a very charismatic fellow, and I wish all reviews were done as you do them. I will continue to watch the video now and finish this comment when I'm through. Ok, so I finished this review.. This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I've done some superficial digging and have seen that you only review audio things. WHY?!!? If I may give you my humble opinion in the form of a request (with no intention of telling you what you should do)... Please review other things too. Many things. Whatever you get your hands on. You've got a gift.

Hahaha. Well thank you very much! I really appreciate those kind words! My intention is to eventually make a living off of KZbin. One of the common bits of advice is to niche down. Which is what I’ve been doing. However, I am branching out into a few video related products. So who knows what the future might bring? Hopefully not a dead mouse left at my back porch. Cheers, man!

I still use the H1 and it sounds great, I dont think anyone really needs the latest thing, stick with what sounds good
@TheRecordist11 ай бұрын
Yep. The original H1 is just fine. I also still use the original for many things. If it works, that’s all that matters.

Great video ! Are there any specific clip on / lav mics that you'd reccomend for the zoom h1n ?
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Hey. Thank! Yes. I always recommend Clippy EM-272 omni lav mics. They’re a little larger than most but the sound is amazeballs. www.Micbooster.com Cheers!

Thank you kindly for the Review. I'm looking for a Digital Voice Recorder and still pondering the Zoom H1n in 2024 or if I can find something similar that's better for the same reasonable price.
@TheRecordist4 ай бұрын
Hey. No worries. I would say that if you can find the Zoom H1n, grab it. It’s a great little recorder. Not the best but the best for the money. That model has now been replaced with the H1essential which is 32 bits and less options.

Thank you for the funny but very educational review. I know nothing about audio recording and i am in search of a method to record my son's trombone practice. Cell phone mic sounds terrible for this use. I am thinking that this recorder might be what i am after.
@TheRecordist7 ай бұрын
Oh it’s a great little recorder for that. Stereo and easy. There’s a new version now called the Zoom H1 Essential which has 32 bit recording. That just means that you don’t need to worry about how loud the sound source gets. Either way, it’s a cheap and reliable recorder. Good luck!
