The H1n still boils my blood somewhat, it seems like they completely missed the point of the original. Having a single AA is much easier to manage with the H1 compared to the 2xAAA on the H1n. H1n is larger for seemingly no reason.. and still has the same annoying 32GB card limit (no SDXC support in 2018?) I would have payed 3x the price of the H1 for the exact same physical format with SDXC support and the highest quality mics in the cage they could muster PS: H1n looks to have the dreadful MicroUSB, not the robust MiniUSB
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
I can’t argue with any of that. But it’s the cheapest most entry level recorder in their H series. I don’t expect them to change much for the better. But I do appreciate the gain dial as opposed to the buttons. I still find myself reaching for my old H1 more than I thought I would. But you’re right about just about everything you said.

Hi, I have a problem with my H1N. As soon as I turn up the gain wheel over level 6, the background noise starts to be too much. From level 7 is unacceptable! I don't understand why my H1N is so noisy compared to many other which were tested by KZbinrs in many videos.. Could It be possible that my H1N is broken? (I bought it 3 days ago). Thanks.
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Generally the H1n has noisy preamps above 5.5. I always try to keep my recordings under 5.5 on the gain wheel and then increase the gain in post. That said, I can’t hear the noise to be able to tell you. Please email me 10 seconds of your gain at 5 and 10 seconds with your gain at 6. Just silence. I’ll let you know what I think. Recordist@thetps.ca
@_stellasolitaria_ Жыл бұрын
@@TheRecordist thx a lot for replying. Ok, you confirm the noisy mic/preamp. So should I stay relaxed? No worries about possible malfunctioning?!? ... really? Can I stay in 5.5 and turn up the volume in post production? Do you get an acceptable result? Thanks!
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
@@_stellasolitaria_ hi there. Yes. It helps to keep it under 5.5 on the gain dial. But the H1n is a noisy recorder anyway. Not as noisy as many other products but noisy by pro standards. Generally, getting closer to a source reduces noise. But to get very low noise, you’d have to get into the Zoom F-series or Sound Devices MixPre series or the like.

I love your humorous, down to earth presentation. I was looking for a stereo mic for my Fuji S20 (I have the Rode Micro mono mic). I was going to get the Sennheiser, but it is pricey. I'm looking for ambient sound with travel videos. I'm now thinking about starting with the Zoom H1. I can mount it on my camera cage and plug it into the camera and either use that audio or synch the H1 audio in post. The added benefit is I could use the H1 to capture wild ambient audio to add to other videos. Thanks again!

Just got two of these, to accompany my old but trusty DR-40. I'm recording various vehicles from the cockpit with DR-40, and two H1n will record exterior sounds from the front, and rear of the vehicle. First house tests told me quite fast that H1n is simply not for recording quiet environments, preamps (or mics) are quite noisy even comparing to old DR-40, which is practically at the bottom of the field recorders noise test table. But hey, I will use them in loud environment, so I guess I made a right decision for low price, to cover multiple angles.
@TheRecordist4 ай бұрын
@@Pe11ePD hey. Yes indeed. Any Zoom H series is going to have noisy preamps. To get quiet preamps you’d have to venture into the F series. For me, I went with Sound Devices MixPre for crazy quiet preamps. But I still use the H1n for all kinds of louder recordings.
@Pe11ePD4 ай бұрын
@@TheRecordist I already got my pick at Tascam Portacapture X6. Adjustable stereo field like on my DR-40, but 32bit float up to 140db, very quiet preamps, great display. All that I wanted in a handheld recorder. I don't like chasing mics for F series etc, I'm a sucker for handheld recorders with internal mics, as they are practical for my needs, and deliver GREAT sound for the type of recordings I do. When I get my hands on X6, I can finally do really quiet ambiances.

Fix for rattling noise: take a foam earbud fluffy cover, cut a very thin strip and insert it along the top or bottom of the volume rocker. Poke it in with a thin sharp blade. It will stay nicely in the cavity and totally cure the rattle. You'll need to do the same with the trash/delete button. These are the only buttons that have the rattle and this solution is so good it might have been something they did in the factory. Black coloured foam will not be visible, or it will look factory made on a white edition. Very smart looking and feeling too.

You deserve far more than 12k subs. This is a very high quality and just great video. I think the only thing missing might just be your thumbnails. I think once someone clicks they’ll have a hard time not sticking around. Keep up the good work and work on your thumbnails, maybe even hire a professional to help if you can afford it. My gut instinct tells me putting your face in the thumbnail would help. To me your thumbnails make me feel like I’m about to watch an amateur KZbinr, not a professional like you are. Sorry for being so harsh on your thumbnails but in my time watching KZbin it feels like that’s the only thing keeping you from being a top tier product reviewer. 👍👍

I've been using it for outdoor field recordings for three of years, for me it is the best, providing you don't mind syncing the audio later. Why I use this is with dead cat, unlike most others there is still a sterile area around the X-Y mics as it's design keeps the windshield/dead cat off of them. With say the H2n if the wind hits the dead cat, it comes up against solid object or barrier. With the H1N it has no solid barrier behind the dead cat.

Thank you kindly for the Review. I'm looking for a Digital Voice Recorder and still pondering the Zoom H1n in 2024 or if I can find something similar that's better for the same reasonable price.
@TheRecordist8 ай бұрын
Hey. No worries. I would say that if you can find the Zoom H1n, grab it. It’s a great little recorder. Not the best but the best for the money. That model has now been replaced with the H1essential which is 32 bits and less options.

Nice review! Got this little fella last week, equipped it with 5k milliamp battery and went to record all kinds of stuff in my house :D Those electrets are pretty good for the price of the recorder!

Thanks very much! Yes it’s a good little recorder. So cheap for what it can do. I have both the original H1 and the H1n. I love them both. Thanks for watching!

Great video. Thankyou. One thing- do you have to take batteries out when not using? My batteries seem to run down so quickly.
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! I notice that happening with rechargeable batteries but not regular alkaline ones. Are you per chance using rechargeable batteries?
@kimpearce2482 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRecordist so appreciate your reply, I use regular Alkaline, twice now they have run down … thanks again, you have a gift of teaching and entertaining!
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
@@kimpearce2482 hmm. Maybe it’s trickle draining. That’s strange. I keep my alkalines in there always and it’s ready to go each time with the same amount of charge. I don’t recall if there was a setting for that other than to be sure to tell the unit that you’re using alkaline batteries in the menu.

In the video at 2:25, I see version: 1.21 on the screen, is there a new firmware version? My says version: 1.19, I don't a system version 1.21 on the Zoom site for this model...?
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Good eye! I don’t have an answer for you. It shipped that way. I went to see if it needed an firmware update and I found that the newest firmware had a smaller number than the one it says on my recorder. It makes no sense. It’s an error. There is no newer firmware update. You’re good. Haha.

Great review and awesome video thanks! I've been on the fence about this for a bit now...I'm back in a band after a long while out of the life, I been using an iPhone to record our noize making but, it cuts out and sounds are (bad)funky. In a practice space, full band with loud drums, bass and a couple guitars...would this be of any use at all? I just want something for review not tracks to edit, I just wanna see how much we suck or not. Would this work for that?
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes. I think this will work for what you’re after. It can take some high SPL. It’ll sound like it sounds when in the room. Placement will be key for a balanced sound since there aren’t separate tracks to mic everything. I think it’ll work great. Cheers!

Great and funny review! I consider buying a portable recorder for on-the-go recordings. Is it compatible with the Clippy EM272Z1Mics? Because they require 12-48V phantom power. Is there a comparable alternative if the H1N doesn't have phantom power?
@TheRecordist10 ай бұрын
Hey thanks! No, the H1n can’t take XLR cables. But there are versions of the Clippy EM272 mics that terminate in a stereo 3.5mm connector. As for alternatives that can take the XLR cables, I would look at the Zoom F3 for a really nice sounding recorder with nice preamps. Also, there are the Zoom H4n Pro or the Zoom H5. Both of those do not have preamps as good as the F3 but they will do the job. Hope this helps!
@seraphims321910 ай бұрын
@@TheRecordistThank you, a lot of options! I already use the F6, that's why I was thinking of a smaller field recorder for travelling. Do you know if the Clippys that I have would work on the H1N if I would only buy an adapter XLR to 3.5mm? They require phantom power. As for the F3, does it have preamps that are similar to the F6 and does it allow you to separately switch on/off the phantom power on both XLR inputs?
@TheRecordist10 ай бұрын
@@seraphims3219 hey. The H1n doesn’t provide phantom power. You need XLR ins to power a mic that requires 48v phantom power. There is no adapter that will work, unless you used an external powered XLR mixer and piped the stereo output to the H1n.

Great video thanks. Would the H1n be suitable to record a choir containing about 30 voices and what settings would be best. Thanks
@TheRecordist8 ай бұрын
Hi there. Thanks! Yes, the H1n would work well for a choir. I’d set it to 24 bit, 48kHz, and then have the peaks hitting at -12 to -6dB. Be sure to mount the device center and on a stand. Do not touch the unit during recording since it’s sensitive. Should work pretty good!
