I feel like incorporating magnets into the Shabbard can assist with placing the sword into the scabbard and help reduce the size of the guiding part. Also, to get better stability, spread out the magnets along the length of where you want the sword, then it wont twist around. Like, say across the back, put the magnets in two places far apart that they act as two different anchor points instead of one, as they did in the video.

Now i really like the idea of a magnet to attach your swords to and it comes with quite a few benefits, although id say the main problem with carrying a sword like that, is that wearing it for long periods of time is increases the chances of the sword, possibly being accidentally damaged by bumping the swords against hard objects and having it be more exposed to subsances that could contribute to eroding. So therefore requiring a fair bit more maintenance(assuming you'd wear it frequnetly and for long periods of time) but as this topic went on i was wondering could we use the magnets as a form of protection? Like for example if you were some kind of civilian and the threat of swords or other bladed weapons being used was prominent enough to warrant protection could magnets work to some capacity as a decently practical form of protection. So an example of it being used as possible protection could be by having armoured parts of everyday clothing or gambeson(for gambeson i mean having steal plates)having magnets attached to them. So lets say you have pauldrons with magnets attached, however you dont have much neck protection so if someone were to swing at your neck the magnets would hypotbetically pull the sword towards the pouldrens, preventing it from having clean or any contact to the neck and if the sword gets stuck to the pouldrens there is a fair chance you would be able to get control of the sword or atleast in a more favourable grapling position and at the least giving your body guard(if you were rich)enough time to get to you and prevent more harm from coming to you. And thats just one example, could have them around arteries to help protect you from attacks that would land at those vital areas but instead pulling it to an armoured part of your body giving you time for a counter attack or some deffensive manouver. Or you could have them attached to shields so you could catch swords with it allowing you to do as yku please. But i am curious to see what people would have to say about this and i think i video on this topic would be pretty cool. I mean if these magnets worked they couldbhave the benefits of being convenient, more affordable and it would have a pretty big surprise factor, cause nobody would suspect it and would be pretty easy to conceal.
@DrexisEbon9 ай бұрын
I do this with my larp swords. I wear a backshield and arch then switch to longsword and I use my shield and magnets to mount my longsword to the inside of the back of it for a quick deploy. Just drop the bow and boom, now I'm the OTHER kind of support fighter.

This is probably the closest thing we have to the way video games handle these things! Also, this is actually a FANTASTIC idea for low-fantasy settings where we can have actual plates made of some manner of unobtanium, but that operates in a similar yet much smoother and convenient fashion. I am now going to steal this concept.

You could put the magnets on the sheath itself and attach the sheath to your back. Then to grab it, you pull it off your back sheath and all and throw the sheath away before your fight, if you survive your fight, you put it back in your sheath and slap your sheath on your back.

What if magnets were built in the sword (drilled or atached in some other way)? Could you just chuck it on your plate armor? :D
@Kennet05089 ай бұрын
It would have to be considerably thought out, having a compromise in the sword structure will severely diminish the durability of it. Also there's some issues with heat treatment, so most likely the magnet would have to come on after quenching. Aswell as the added weight makes the sword less wieldy

Looks like using magnets in place of a scabbard is NOT worthwhile for swords up to three feet in length, but MAY BE worthwhile for longer weapons that cannot be worn on one's side. Of course, that then begs the question of how expensive such magnets will be in a medieval fantasy setting- one that may use magic for large-scale production of magnets, potentially reducing costs- compared to leather straps and wooden scabbards.

Be careful of having strong magnets in close contact with your body for long periods of time! I used to have this cross sling messenger bag. I put some really strong magnets on the body facing side for an unrelated project, and was too lazy to remove them after. Those damn magnets gave me chest pains in exactly where the magnets were in close contact with !!
