Yes, proper coiling works wonders. Also, if you had help, you could have somebody throw the coil forward into the air just before the shot which could get you significantly more distance as well
@DIREWOLFx758 ай бұрын
From what i found out once upon a time, to shoot rope with a bow, you need a special superheavy arrow and you need a rope that is more stiff, closer to something like thin metal wire, as otherwise, yeah, tangling is automatically a BIG problem. Oh, and preferably a much stronger bow as well. Amusingly, i've been told that the closest media has come to reality in regards to this(and still mostly NOT realistic), is the old movie Revenge of the Ninja. The distance is far too great, BUT, he uses a special arrow, a special bow that he has to draw sitting with the bow held by the feet, to get enough pullstrength. And he uses a very THIN CORD during the shot, which is then used to drag a stronger line across until it locks into the arrow. . "20 meters?", "40 meters?" Yeah. BUUUT, we know that shooting ropes with arrows HAVE been done historically, but AFAIK, absolutely NEVER in any way similar to how its overwhelmingly mostly done in fiction. And even there it's RARE. IIRC, there was some junglepeople that used it for hunting birds on rivers, to avoid the bird just going away with the flow of the water, and i think this was the most common actual historical use that we know of. Oh, and some people used it for fishing as well. Supposedly, it's possible to reach 100m under absolutely perfect conditions, but 50-55m is normally closer to the limit of reality.

There was an episode from the British sitcom "Dad's Army" where the vicar used an arrow with silk thread. It was implied that the rope still needed to be pulled up with the thread.

I just used my 30 lb recurve bow to lob a twine-laden arrow over my 30' house. It only worked when I laid out the length of the twine on the ground first.
@MauricioOsuna-et8et8 ай бұрын
The way I see it, you'd need a specialized arrow, thicker to allow a row of 3-4 holes to weave in the rope - this will limit it to a rope thinner than the arrow, but it won't hit the bow on its way out. The second issue would be of having an arrowhead speacilized for digging into and grappling the wood so as to stay hooked. The third issue would be the arrow. Ain't no arrow holding a grown man's weight. The fourth issue would be... The rope itself. If you're limited to a thin rope, you're not exactly going to rappel through it. It's a trope, for entertainment, and nothing more. You might use it to sneak in items from one place to another, but when was the last time you saw a movie about a TEAM OF ROGUES each doing one thing and cooperating from a distance? ... Honestly, this would be like The Lost Vikings, where each character is unique and puzzles are solved by making each one take a specific action in a set order.

Instead of making the arrow thinker and adding holes, the best solution might be to make an additional hook of sorts on the back of the arrow, maybe clamped on with a pin or bent edges that slightly dig into the arrow butt. Then have a small metal loop like a chain link that allows for a rope to be connected with a small carabiner you might use on a keychain. But have the loop also shaped in a way that allows for the usual gripping arrows do on the bowstring.

There are techniques to coil/flake rope without a spool such that the rope is unlikely to tangle as it unravels, though I think the point is moot in the latter two shots. That said, I agree that the trope is unrealistic. The arrow is gaining mass and drag as it flies, so it can't fly as far and probably would not have enough energy to penetrate an object enough to hold the weight of a person. The only realistic use I can think of would be to bridge a gap: after firing, you could tie a heavier rope to the lighter rope and pull it across. That requires a person receiving the arrow on the far side, though, but it would be useful for constructing ropeway bridges across gaps.

Another issue could perhaps be the relatively low weight of the arrow compared to the total weight of the rope. A grapling hook is a lot heavier than even the heaviest arrow
@widgren878 ай бұрын
I can see some improvised uses for this like say needing to get a rope across a river or ravine that is to wide to simply throw the rope across, and no magic, flying or teleporting, but you have a friend on the other side. Maybe a agreed meeting with storm floods tearing down the bridge or rope bridge giving up as or what ever the reasons behind it be. Shooting an arrow with a very thin line like say a fishing line across the gap to allow the ones on the other side to pull a stronger rope across is still worth it. Hope this made sense ;-)

I have a suggestion as to how you could attempt to shoot your arrow with a scenario with the rope, I've seen some setups with shooting rope and they have the rope laying on the ground in front of them in a zig zag fashion so it is all closely arranged near them and with it like that it would give the less amount of drag on the grass. also your comment on the side of the bow the rope would be on, you could have the rope laying on the other side and then it could go over your bow arm instead of your pull arm

I found this video because I was looking for a way to get a safety rope over the 30' peak roof of my house. I decided I wanted to tie twine to an arrow and lob it over then tie my end of the twine to the rope and pull it over. I use a 30 lb recurve bow (I'm a 5'7", 123 lb woman), and the arrow does cross over on my bow. Initially, I had someone holding the spool of twine on a rod so that it would unspool...but that was too much for it. Then I unspooled a large amount (about 50 feet) and laid it in 3 rows, tied it to my arrow and shot it over (making sure to twist my bow wrist away from the line as soon as I shot). It worked perfectly! I think this may be the only practical application for tying anything to an arrow.

In rock climbing, you always unwind the rope before climbing to be sure that there is no tangle like you had. A climber would never just put the coils of rope directly on the ground like you did, it's sure to make a knot at one point.

You could also try using a string with a rope spliced on after about 5-10m. Really wont get you much better, but then you wouldn't have to make a large hole in your arrow for the most secure type of rope arrow. Said it then, saying it now: not exactly an infiltration method, but might be a good way to steal food from a poorly guarded castle.
