What are the rules or etiquette for wearing military medals/decorations with a kilt and formal highland dress?
When and how is it appropriate to wear your medals with your kilt?

"Less is More" . . I agree with this. When I wear my Kilt at the Marine Corps Ball I only wear 4 mini-ribbons. The leading rank ribbon at top by itself, then the next three in the single row below it. Nothing wrong with leaving some ribbons out to make it neat, (and for gods sake don't wear your marksmanship badges!) I saw that once and nearly died.

While in all fairness, few will hassle you about wearing your medals any way you want, unless you happen to live near a military installation, proper authorized wear IS regulated by the Services. In the instance of the U.S. Army, Army Regulation (AR) 670-1 stipulates, in part - (For those currently serving) 22-3. When wearing awards is prohibited Wearing awards is prohibited in the following circumstances: a. On any uniform other than those authorized in this regulation. (See 18 USC 704 for the penalty for unauthorized wear of the uniform.) b. When serving a sentence of confinement. c. When wearing civilian clothing, except for civilian awards, lapel buttons, or rosettes intended for wear with civilian clothing. Soldiers may wear miniature medals on formal civilian attire at formal social functions, when wearing the Army uniform is inappropriate or not authorized. And - 23-6. Medals on civilian clothes Retired personnel and former members of the Army (as described above) may wear all categories of medals described in this regulation on appropriate civilian clothing. This includes clothes designed for veteran and patriotic organizations on Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, and Armed Forces Day, as well as at formal occasions of ceremony and social functions of a military nature. Personnel may wear either full-sized or miniature medals. Personnel who wear medals on civilian clothes should place the medals on the clothing in approximately the same location and in the same manner as for the Army uniform, so they look similar to medals worn on the Army uniform. On Veteran's Day I saw an old guy at church wearing his ribbon rack on a WWII graphic T-shirt. What inspector's gonna really care? He earned them.

I wear my mini medals and even purchased them for my veteran groomsmen.

I wouldn't. I never wore mine even on my Class A uniform, just the representative ribbons. My medals are in a box somewhere.

MCO 1020.34H stipulates and does authorize the wearing of miniature medals as per Section 5203 para 5. As there is no Official Marine Corps Uniform that authorizes wear of the kilt with either the Dress Blue blouse or Evening Dress Jacket, wearing of the miniature medals as per the order would be as if the Veteran is wearing a formal jacket (black tie or suit). Per the Order, I could wear the medals or ribbons on a leather jacket provided I was not wearing the decorations in a manner that would disgrace the United States Marine Corps or Armed Forces of the United States.

I believe MARDET stationed onboard USS Holland AS32 in 1975-76 were part of the Mountbatten Cup award which also created the Posiden Tartan for Holy Loch sailors stationed there, we could wear it for formal occasions.

Mini medals? Most of us either have a full size medal we keep in the box. Or the ribbon rack. I don't think I've ever seen mini medals irl

Would you say it would be in good taste to wear religious medals such as those by the Knights of Columbus with dinner dress if you have no military awards, on certain occasions?

There are no standard, dress or mess US military uniforms.

Yes, but primarily the British Army.

@@bl00dhoney totally and an accidental oversight on my part,as I chat with several former members of the Seaforth Regt.. Regiments from other nations also wear kilt and a little more research to confirm them will highlight those too (Gurkha (Ceremonial) spring to mind, as well as several Commonwealth regiments)
