Just a history thing, as a Iranian i have to say that. it originates from Medians 800 - 500bce (whom are Kurds, Luris, adheri/azheris and gilaki...) and then persian took it aswell later on (it is not just persian or median it is Iranian thing and by that i mean u can encounter it even in Tajikistan or Afghanistan). and it was not just a military thing, most of people used it in their normal life and yet they use when wearing traditional dresses.

My cummerbund actually has a sort of buckle in the back - I can't name it, but it's that three-pronged thing that you push into a slot, and it snaps. I find that to be enormously convenient; it's never going to fall apart like some other closures might.
@willcastellow9713

I also have a cummerbund that buckles in the back, it is quite satisfying to buckle and it doesn't come apart like other cummerbunds I've went through as a musician.

IIRC (not an expert) it’s not the only Middle Eastern or Indian item of men’s dress to become fashionable in Europe. Back in the eighteenth century a gentleman would often wear a turban in the morning with his dressing gown before putting on his clothes and wig to go outdoors.

Thank you for bringing this nearly lost gentlemanly knowledge to a wider audience, it is desperately needed. I wear the following black fie outfit to the opera regularly: 20€ black bowtie from eBay, 10€ black tie dress shirt from eBay, 30€ Tuxedo from ebay. 20€ burgundy cumberbund from eBay, 100€ Bally Shoes also from ebay (they are black derbies with broughing, so not really black tie appropriate, but i don't have opera pumps or shiny shoes), plain stainless steal cufflinks i inherited from my Dad, red paisley pocket square for 1€ from eBay. It's a lame, horrible and cheap compilation (except for the Bally shoes) but believe it or not: i'm usually the best dressed guy around and get tons of compliments because people here rarely ever see someone wearing a black tie outfit so the bar is incredibly low.

In India we wear something called a "kurta" which is basically a mid-thigh to knee-length tunic similar to the ones used across the civilized ancient world from Persia to rome (very few romans wore togas). I've recently modified the kurta by essentially turning it into a long shirt. The full plaquet permits a closer fit at the waist, but I've reintroduced the Kamarband (meaning waist tie) to the mix as it provides another opportunity for subtle ornamentation. It also looks more appropriate than a trench coat belt which would seem to heavy for the whole thing.

Interestingly the word kamarband is still in use in iran, but it only refers to regular belts. to my knowledge we don't even have a word for cummerbund anymore.

I’m glad that you did this episode. My preference is for a cummerbund as opposed to a waistcoat. While black is my preference in color, I do have a rainbow of colored cummerbunds with matching bow ties (no it didn’t start in high school, but in college). I wear the colored sets depending on my mood, but as said, black is my usual go to. I do have seven tuxedos (All custom except my dinner jacket-white) and a matching set for each tux, but since the lapels are all black, a black bow and bund go very well with all of them. I love wearing formal wear and do it often. Hey, I have a suggestion for a couple of episodes based on your Sinatra style episode: do one on Dean Martin and one on Sammy Davis Jr. They could be a good thing.

I’m going to say it because maybe I am not alone in my love for the cummerbund. Yes, it is probably the most misunderstood item in Men’s wear but it also is the most beautiful piece to wear with a tuxedo. The cummerbund has the ability to make a tall man (or even a medium height man) appear to be taller. It hides that triangle of dress shirt below the button of the tuxedo jacket and so it appears that we are wearing a continuous line of black. Probably the biggest challenge with the cummerbund is trying to get it tight enough (your bow tie should also be snug) so it doesn’t slip down. As I said before I prefer a cummerbund over a waistcoat because it looks more formal over the waistcoat thus giving a formal feeling to everything that you wear for a black-tie occasion. I love SRS’s dinner jacket in that silver. The cummerbund and bow tie truly bring out the color really well. While I don’t wish to push my personal preferences on formal wear on anybody, I would suggest that if you haven’t tried a cummerbund before, why not try it and see if you feel a bit cooler, and maybe even a bit taller than you are. I think you’ll find that you like it a lot better than the current version of a waistcoat which tends to look more like a regular suit vest than a true formal waist covering.

I've never worn one when I've dressed in black tie. I had a vest that unfortunately my stomach has grown a bit too big for to wear properly now. I did plan on getting a red one to match my red bow tie for potential red sea rigging, but now I have to get just a regular black one to replace my vest. Though to be honest, with today's casualization of everything, I would be willing to forgo both a cummerbund or vest for my formal events. I rarely see anyone wear them during these functions anyways.

Since I heard the name CUMMERBUND, I was skeptical it originated in India as I'm an Indian who speaks Hindi...& in Hindi Kamar band literally means something which cover your waist or back. Happy to know there's an Indian origin accessory in a western outfit.

1. Use a ‘belly band’ directly under the cummerbund. Tuxedo pants don’t normally use belts so you can’t use an IWB holster 2. Shoulder rig, but have to tailor your coat around it. But you have to tailor your regular sport coats already 3. Ankle 4. Easiest of all, get a small enough handgun and a pocket holster for the tuxedo jacket. Get a Blackwatch Tartan dinner jacket and the pattern really keeps anything from printing.

Cummer means Waist Bund means closing Technically meaning something you wrap around waist. In Islam, you can actually go shirtless everywhere. The only mandatory thing that guys need to cover was the body from naval to just below the knee. Since trousers could not go upto the naval. Hence guys wore cummerbund to cover the naval part.

2:19 thanks for your effort to mention it correctly the "South Asia" .. not like india as everyone would've said, without thinking that South Asia is not india but of a region of various groups, ethnicities, nations, kingdom, people & countries (to be honest there was no such a thing called india till 1947). ... then, "Kamar" or "Komor" in Bangla & Persian language literally means "waist" & "band" means "blinder" .. kinda' makes sense as elite Bangali, Persians & Ottomans founded Bengal sultanate in Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, (which is now modern day Bangladesh) in 14th to 16th century right around the same time of the Mughal empire which was located couple of thousands miles away to the west. .. the waist blinder was famously used to carry or fasten a sword or decorative dagger which was a symbol of nobility.

I don't understand how could anyone confuse India with Persia if they are mentally sane or an adult. 'Kamar' means hips and 'bandh' means to tie which was then adopted and changed into cummerbund by the then British robbers. Indians back in the day use to wear it to secure their lowers like a modern day belts.

I found this informative, thank you! Yet I must say that considering your concern with promoting an awareness of tradition, enthusiasm for high quality items, and a sense of good taste, you do yourselves a disservice with the intro music. Jazz is an excellent choice-- but why not hire a musician with greater concern for technique and reverence for the language. The saxophonist exhibits sloppy tonguing and is not 'in the pocket' as they say (the musical equivalent of a clip-on tie from Walmart). There is no shortage of creative, disciplined, and affordable musicians who could provide something that really swings and shows greater reverence for what is both a highly technical and emotional music of improvisation and innovation.

I actually prefer wearing a cummerbund with double-breasted dinner suits and jackets for that reason. Generally, you won't want to take your jacket off. However, there may come times you're basically forced to, such as with a busted A/C or a particularly hot climate outdoors. I've even had to take my white tie tailcoat off while vigorously ballroom dancing in a dance hall with no A/C. I suppose I just disagree with Raphael here.
