Can you winch without anything around? Check out the Pull Pal

Sometimes there just isn't anything around to winch off of and this can leave you in a serious bind if you are not prepared. For this, we have the Pull Pal, and it has saved our bacon several times!

Sometimes even going out with another vehicle isn’t enough. I’ve already seen where the vehicle being winched is so stuck that the winching vehicle just gets pulled towards it. So the winching vehicle needed to be anchored to another vehicle.

Excellent point, winching is pointless if the winching vehicle isn't secure.

I would be interested in a comparison with soft style winch anchors like The Deadman. I carry a Deadman with me but fortunately have never needed to use it for recovery. It is lighter and cheaper, but on the other hand it also requires more digging.

If you have ever tried to dig a hole in completely frozen soil, you will really appreciate the land anchor over the Deadman. The Deadman is a very versatile product, and is perfect in a lot of conditions. Take deep sand, the Deadman only needs to be buried a couple of feet. The Pull Pal could get pulled so far down into the sand that you then need to do a recovery just to get the Pull Pal out. While there is certainly some overlap, each tool has it's strengths and weaknesses.

This was really helpful. I just got a winch, haven't got it installed yet. I live in Nevada where it's mostly desert, and have been thinking about a pull pal for my outfitting. I already have a high lift jack and a cheap kinetic rope with a couple of soft shackles. I'm sure the winch will help a lot but I am concerned about not having anything to winch to.

I made mine it’s smaller cost me 50$ for one piece. I use mine for a double line pull as a tree beside my Jeep.

The “Jeep” size version is $400. We went with the larger one due to our trailer and our volunteer work with recovery teams.

From South Africa hahaha converted, it's 10 000.00 to 12 000.00 ZAR 😢😢 but I got one ! walked into my favorite charity shop, saw it, says I to the shopkeeper, that's sold, how much? 300.00 ZAR... done deal 😂 Mounted it on the bull bar of my 2002 Discovery ll Td5 . I travel solo. Use it as a straight line recovery, or a double line recovery ... brilliant piece of gear.... always said, a winch without an anchor is like shoes without feet 😮 @ 65, I ain't up for digging for a Deadman / tyre / buried tree trunk... 😅

This is comical. If you're going to demonstrate how useful a pull pal is, you should start with a vehicle that is actually stuck. The pull pal is great if you frequently get stuck in places with soft ground and nothing around to anchor to. However, they are expensive, and your rig only has so much space in it to store stuff. They are much like a high lift or farm jack. 90% percent of people who buy them will never use them. And the space and money wasted on them could have been used on something much more usable. In the rare occasion you get stuck in soft ground with no anchor point around just grab your shovel, a tool every off roader SHOULD have, dig a hole, and drop your spare tire in it. This will give you an anchor point with a much bigger footprint to pull on.

I do have videos of being stuck and needing to use the pull pal but for demonstration purposes it wasn’t needed. I take it you have never tried to dig a hole big enough for a 38” tire in the Rocky Mountains or in frozen ground.
