Canaanite Magic and Divination - Ugaritic Texts on Healing, Astrology, the Evil Eye & Hangovers!

The ancient myths, rituals and magic of the ancient Canaanites spent millennia known only through an Israelite lens, darkly. That is, in large part, until the discovery of the ancient lost city of Ugarit and the cuneiform tablets preserved in the fires that doomed the city as part of the Bronze Age Collapse. In this episode, I'll be exploring the precious remains of the divinatory and incantation texts which provide us a glimpse into the rituals by which these ancient Canaanites sought to peer into the future, counter evil magic and even cure a divine hangover!

Will you perhaps consider uploading an in depth/highly detailed analysis, research and background texts behind the language of Mesopotamia, (and its linguistics/how each letter/word may have sounded), as so forth I’ve sadly only found a few excerpts “if that”online, and it’s really jarring! However thank you ESOTERICA for all that you do input wise and creating a platform of solid/thorough knowledge of a plethora of poly-topics/subjects X

@@BenedictaXValentina I'm not an ane linguist and, to my knowledge, there's no agreement on the vocalization of many ancient languages including Ugaritic. Hence the texts are presented with only the consonants in this case.

I've been taking organic tobacco, haven't got sick the whole time. My mom got sick & I made her organic tobacco tea, she was better the next day. Stuff is strong. I like to add some ginger, garlic & tumeric. Wishing you the best bro. "First, scientists engineer bacteria to carry the latest flu markers and wash them over Nicotiana benthamiana tobacco plants. The bacteria dump the DNA into the plant’s cells, which follow its instructions to churn out the flu protein. Technicians then grind up the leaves to extract the protein. Injected into a person, the protein works like any vaccine, training the body to attack the flu virus."

@@TheEsotericaChannel I know right? I wish I'd gone when I lived in Syria. In 2009, I actually got to see the tiny tablet from there containing the first "alphabet" in cuneiform that you mentioned, in the Museum of Damascus. They had it displayed behind a giant magnifying glass because it was so tiny. Kinda trippy something so miniscule can have such an enormous global legacy.

The islamic Hadith literature seems to say almost the exact things: snake, scorpion, and evil eye taking center stage in the "magic" practices mentioned therein. Probably has cultural origins in these earlier traditions.

A lot of Islamic traditions are taken from Jewish and Christian practices of the time or from Jewish and Christian literature. Some cananite were more prominent in their traditions at the time and many are still important, especially in Judaism.

"Disarming the bites of vipers" as it was described in Virgil's golden age, is a euphemism (disphemism? Kakaphemism?) that Ficino refers to in a really nasty way when discussing how the Golden Age (of the Messiah) has already come in DCR: "Look! Christians and Jews get along far more now than they used to! the Golden Age has already come!"

Wow, the 'hair of the dog' thing was a very entertaining surprise! It really is amazing how some concepts and ideas can linger in culture and just... persist. Not due to anyone taking any special effort to keep them alive, but simply due to most people not questioning their origin and applicability. I don't know very much about cultures as ancient as Ugarit and the Bronze Age, but I know there are a tremendous amount of ideas adopted for pragmatic reasons during the Industrial Revolution as factories led to booming and overcrowded urban centers which we simply... keep around. Even when those ideas harm people in the modern day, and every practical reason that justified them fell away a century or several decades ago, many people will step up to resist change simply because it's "always" been a certain way. It would make sense for things to persist for a long time if they had some grain of truth to them, or some lingering utility to people... but just having the words and phrases around and overheard seems to let them perpetuate themselves! Amazing!

Well they did have the same believe system. The capital of the kingdom of Judea, Jerusalem, had Yahweh (which was simply one of multiple gods) as its patron god and when they got exiled and culturally surpressed, they became henotheistic (basically meaning that Yahweh was the father of all other gods, a bit like Odin in modern interpretations of Norse Mythology). I'm not sure if it was at this point (I really need to refresh my memory on Mesopotamian history) but the Israelites became iconoclastic, destroying all depictions of other gods and over a long period of time the henotheism changed into monotheism. You can see remnants of this in for example how names of what were previously gods were combined into names for demons, such as Beelzebub (though, this might actually be a Christian demon, not a Jewish one, I'm not sure but it's what came to mind).

Im pretty sure if you asked them about "the Ugaritic Cycle" theyd give you a blank stare. Im rather shocked by their apparent lack of curiosity vs me, the atheist. Its strange. Get well soon, btw! It struck me that going to the Temple of Asclepius would be the closest thing to a doctor for many of the ancient lower classes-literally a hope and a prayer lol. I actually wonder if there may be a profound misinterpretation occurring where ancient peoples were simply in the habit of correlating natural events with problematic or notable events in their lives. Thus, they wrote things that we're interpreting as "If the moon is red, then x will happen" when it may be possible that they are simply saying "The moon was red when x happened" and were in the habit of generalizing these observations into principles grammatically. That interpretation sounds familiar and I don't think I'm the first to posit it, but I'd be interested to learn more about that perspective if there are academics who hold something like it.
