Canada is Quietly Building The Trading Empire Of The World

We live in a world where globalization and trade have become one of the most vital aspects in determining the power of a country’s economy.
In fact, the process of getting goods from point A to point B might be one of the most important economic drivers in the world, yet no one talks about it. And somehow…quietly in the background, We might be seeing the creation of the most powerful trading economy in the world…but not for the reasons that you might think.
If you want to ship an item from a manufacturing hub like China, to a consumer hub in a Place like New York…how would you do it?
Well you could just send the package on a direct flight and it’ll get their in roughly 15 hours. But this is extremely costly. It actually costs anywhere from 5 to 15 times more to ship by air than to ship by the most common shipping method… by sea.
So, we are probably going to need to use a sea freighter. Now how would you deliver the package? Well you could drop the package off at long beach, and use a rail or truck to move the item to new york, but again, that is usually more costly.
Now we are in a predicament. In order to get an Item from China, all the way to new york, a ship would need cross the pacific ocean, travel all the way around the bottom of south america, make its way through the atlantic ocean, before reaching its destination after travelling 30,000 kilometres.
And this is a problem that was faced for hundreds of years. For example, when countries like Great Britain wanted to trade with the west coast of the united states or south america. Virtually all ships would’ve needed to travel around the bottom of south america in order to deliver their goods.
That was until the early 1900’s when the United States decided to buy up an 82 kilometre long plot of land in Panama. You see, the united states saw that this was the smallest amount of land that separated the Atlantic Ocean from the Pacific Ocean. So they thought this land could be used for both trade and military purposes. So, they purchased this plot for roughly $40 million dollars, or roughly $916 million dollars today.
They then created an artificial lake, and dug trenches from this new artificial lake(gatun lake) to both the pacific and atlantic oceans.
And finally on August 15th, 1914, the Panama Canal was opened. And the first american ship to ever travel directly from the atlantic ocean to the pacific ocean, without going around south america, had passed through the Canal. It was a cargo ship called SS Ancon, and was largely responsible for shipping cement from New York, to Panama in order to help build the Canal’s infrastructure.
And this opening of the Panama Canal would go on to change the world in many ways. For example, in 2019 nearly 1 million ships passed through this Canal, which indirectly resulted in trillions of dollars worth of commerce. The Canal also generated roughly 2.6 Billion dollars worth of fees for granting access of use of the Canal, so the Canal itself is a pretty decent money maker itself as well.
But this Canal also has limits, for example, no ships longer than 1200ft or wider than 168ft can actually pass through the Canal, as the waterway is simply not large enough to allow bigger ships through. So that is why today, you see most cargo ships being built with the exact dimensions needed to fit in the Panama Canal.
Another more unforeseen effect that this Canal had was that it wreaked havoc on some south American countries like Chile. This was because the ships that once had to stop at multiple port cities along the Chilean coast, all of a sudden stopped coming by. This was a large contributing factor to an economic collapse in Chile, which saw its state income and international trade cut in half within 2 years.
Way too long. End of transcript

The history of the panama canal is much more complex than this. Saying that it’s simply another act of blatant U.S. intervention is false and ahistorical. In the late 1800s, when Panama was still part of what we now call Columbia, the people of Panama wanted to build the canal as a means to gain more economic freedom and sovereignty. The central Columbian government, however, prevented the Canal from being built. So Panama reached out to the U.S. for support in their fight for independence from Columbia. It’s important to note that at this point in time the panama canal project had already begun (undertaken by the French canal company) but had halted in the 1880s and 90s due to worker death tolls and environmental reasons. After Panama gained independence, the canal project was shifted to the U.S., which was much better equipped than the french to build the canal in a less dangerous and more effective manner.

In school every Canadian learns of Canada's history and of the northwest passage. It is just as Canadian as maple syrup. The passage is 100% owned by Canada; it passes through 1500 KM of internal waterways uncontested from any other country, and is firmly under Canada's full control. Canada has invested heavily in its military capability to protect its arctic territories. Our people, especially Inuit rely on the fragile ecological balance there for their hunting and survival.

What type of power a possible ice-age would give to Canada? Exporting ice? Also there is no infrastructure for the above mentioned shipping routes and it would take heavy billions to build it out and return only in long term that is not possible with western mentality.

@@tusuong7654 I don't think canada has a problem as of yet regarding too many chinese communists lol. Canada used to have a bit of a housing issue where china and the USA would buy up the housing sure, but they have since implemented laws to deter such behaviour and make it less appealing for foreigners to buy up land like that. Either way when chinese people come over to canada they become Canadian and I wouldn't consider Canada an extension of china much like I wouldn't consider countries like england with large amounts of indian immigrants and the states an extension of india. Thats a very red pill take. The danger seems largely exaggerated though it is still something to keep in mind if it threatens ones sovereignty. Our country is largely democratic though, hardly communists and mostly liberal more so then the USA. I would say the states has more communist roots rather then Canada with whats going on and how they are dealing with the mass disrest/censorship thats going on right now. Trying to silence protesters reminds me of the hong kong riot. Preventing reporters for reporting on the issue, saw one black reporter/news crew detained and arrested for like, no reason. Police wouldn't even tell them why they were getting arrested just that they were following orders. The USA has so much inner conflict in their nation right now that people are saying their might be a civil war. The US also got problems with russia/spys if they are able to even influence their elections. Keep in mind it was such bills like the digital bill of rights (threatening internet freedom) that were introduced in the United States not Canada, further indicating that the US is more so skewed toward communist behaviour then Canada. A bill stated by canada they would not adopt btw. Just saying I don't think Canada has reached that point yet and the usa has more of a communist problem. Spy's I can agree, but every countries got spys and some more then others like the states where they can hack/tamper with even their electorial process. Until we have similar communist behaviour or tangible evidence obscuring peoples freedom/censorship, I simply can't agree with your take on too many chinese communists in canada/party member.

@Christobanistan If the NW passage becomes a popular shipping lane, Canada is the only country close enough to offer assistance to passing ships, meaning they need money to fund sed patrols. One of the main reasons Canada claims the NW passage is their territory is because they will be obligated to maintain the passage because of their close proximity to it, which costs money. Where's that money coming from? Charging ships for passing through the NW passage, the same way the US did with the Panama canal before they gave it to Panama. (A side note, the US may not own the canal anymore, but they also can't be charged for passing through it, so the US just saved money by giving it to Panama as they no longer have to maintain it. It wasn't generosity, it was in the best interest of the US)

In terms of the oil extraction, I can say there is a lot of parliamentary pushback on the industry. Currently basically all the oil comes from one province, and with Canada's big ecological bent it is becoming socially unpopular to be in oil outside of this one province. I doubt the Arctic oil fields will ever be fully utilized, as we are currently pulling back on oil production for political reasons. There is no shortage, there are literally oil sands on the surface, but because it is not ecofriendly it gets a lot of hate from everyone outside of this one province. Just saying, as someone who lives in this particular province... Also, we haven't built qny infrastructure up there because no one other than the Inuit live there. The government literally pays people to go live there for a time. It is frozen solid tundra most of the year, and the pass is currently only ice-free in the summer.

The NorthWest passage is unlikely to become a primary shipping lane any time soon, nor one that is controlled by Canada. While passage is possible, it is confined to the summer and early fall months and still remains problematic. Ice floes are unpredictable and cause massive navigational issues that make consistent passage very difficult. And while ice levels are decreasing, the point of global warming that would be necessary for year round travel, there would be much bigger issues from global warming (3.0C + warming) in which we would probably all be dead. The United States refuses to acknowledge the NorthWest passage as Canadian territorial waters because it would set legal precedent for other countries to claim similar status globally. This mainly concerns access to the Straits of Hormuz and Straits of Malacca. No other country, or any country in the Arctic Council recognizes Canada's claim to this region, nor do they recognize these claims as supported by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Currently, China is pushing for status as an Arctic Council member, and has created the Arctic Circle organization that seeks to promote economic and navigational interests in the region. The NorthEast passage of Russia is more commonly referred to as the Northern Sea Route. It contains vastly more infrastructure and Russia has committed to tonnage targets. Far greater amounts of Russia's GDP are derived from Arctic activities than Canada's. Even if the geographical distance is longer than the NWP, lower ice levels, higher development and greater infrastructure point to the NSR as a far more likely candidate for Arctic shipping. It is true that the Canadian Arctic is underdeveloped in terms of resource extraction. Canada currently has no offshore Arctic oil wells, and maintains only a few prospective wells in the mainland Arctic. The cost of extraction far exceeds profit margins in the region. Most estimates for extraction hover around $140USD per barrel of oil to support development. Most littoral Arctic ports definitely lack the infrastructure to transport cargo/goods to North America. Most of the Canadian Arctic is accessible by boat or air only, making a cargo port almost completely useless or too inefficient or costly to transport goods/ Lastly, the Arctic Council (which is comprised of Russia, Canada, United States, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norwary and Iceland) has similar contestations to Exclusive Economic Zones that extend outwards from from territorial land claims. While these zones overlap and compete with each other, there is primarily a shared understanding that while these EEZ's overlap, there isn't precedent for claiming ownership of passage rights. Even Russia, whose NSR remains within their territorial boundaries, allows ships to pass through. Cheers!

Canada also has tariffs on many other products its just not talked about much. For instanse the imposed tariffs on gypsum products we use in construction prior to trumps protectionist rampage. The effect of this was up to 40% increase on cost of gypsum products due to the fact that the canadian supplier could not meet the demand of western Canada. I don't get it. It's clearly Canadian territory, as it's all islands with short distances between them. If we do decide to use the north for trade, we should be able to what what we want with it. What happens if an American tanker decides to leak and spill all over up there? We will be left to clean up the mess. We will have to pay to have coast guard to set up shop. If it were to become "international waters" canadians are gonna have to foot the bill. Also it legally can't be considered international water, as it is only within Canadian borders. Some rivers in Europe are considered international, because they are the only waterways some countries have that lead to oceans. Up north, it goes from Canada to more Canada.
