China Is Buying Up The World's Ports...And No One Is Talking About It

This is the port of Long Beach California. It is the second largest Port in North America, Ahead of the 3rd largest Port of New York, and Behind the largest Port which is the port of los angeles. Roughly 16 million Tons of Cargo pass through this port each year and makes its way to warehouses, factories, and homes, within the United States. This single port which is just 13 square kilometres, is responsible for well over $100 Billion dollars worth of trade and employs over 340 000 people in southern california.
So, it is quite apparent that this port is one of the most vital parts of southern california’s economy. Yet..it is not owned by The town of long beach...California...or even the united states.
You see, in late 1980’s, The port of long beach was sold to a company called Orient Overseas International Limited, which was a company that was based out of hong kong. And at the time, Hong Kong was a British colony and a close economic partner with the United States, so the United States viewed this sale as a win-win, as The Hong-Kong based company would go on to invest billions of dollars, and expand the port on its own...while hundreds of thousands of jobs in southern california would be created from this investment.
And for roughly 3 decades, this was a fairly positive relationship between long beach, and the Hong Kong based company.
But then...in 2017 something happened that put an end to this positive relationship. In July of 2017, The Chinese State Run Company, Cosco, ended up purchasing a 75 percent stake the the Orient Overseas International Limited, and became the new owner of the Hong Kong based company, and therefore the owner of the Port of Long Beach.
Now, even though this probably didn’t make the news because shipping is not exactly the most interesting topic to bring up in the mainstream news...it was important enough for the Federal Government to take action.
You see, a state run Chinese company now owned the 3rd most important port in North America...meaning that the Chinese government had control over one of the key trading points and economic hubs of the United States.
And for the United States government, that was unacceptable citing national security risks. So that is why the government forced COSCO to sell off the port of long beach immediately to a non-Chinese state-run company. And in 2019, Australia’s Macquarie Group ended up buying Port for 1.8 Billion Dollars. So now technically the port of long beach is owned by a private australian company, which is viewed as a much safer owner in the eyes of the U.S government.
Now if this was just an isolated incident of China trying to buy up an important seaport, than it might be worth ending the video right here. But this is just one of Dozens of cases, where Chinese State run companies have tried buying out the most important ports in the world.
For example, in Hambantota, Sri Lanka there is a port that is in a strategic location just below one of China’s Rivals, India. So in 2017, China was able to buy out a controlling share in the port, largely because the government of Sri Lanka was in debt and needed foreign investment to save its economy.
In 2015, and 2016, Chinese investors bought out a controlling interest in Port Darwin, and a large share of the port of Melbourne.
They control the port of freeport in the Bahamas, just off of the coast of the United States.
And in fact, Chinese companies control ports in virtually every major country in the world, and in the countries where they dont, they typically have 49% ownership of some ports in the country...like in belgium, France, and the United States.
But here is what is what might be the most striking point of this video. All of these ports that are being bought up all over the world by China, have only occurred over the last 10 years.
Meaning that China went from having relatively no ownership of any ports before the year 2010, to becoming the largest owner of the worlds ports today.
So that brings up the question...why are they doing this, and what are the ramifications of China’s plan?
Well they are doing this because of something they have called the belt and road initiative. This was a plan announced by China in the early 2010’s, with the purpose of having a global development and investment strategy.
Too long transcript.

Hey Everyone...So i built a new computer and had to learn a new editing program (hence why its been 2 weeks since my last post). If there's any errors or this video is a little choppy, that's my bad. I just need some practice with Adobe. Anyways... What do you think of china's port play and belt and road initiative?

Definition of a superpower is a country that can project it's military anywhere in the world. China does not meet this definition and is therefore NOT a superpower. They have military hardware, a lot of which has not been tested and is poorly maintained. Don't believe me? Dramatic Headline. China is buying up Ports in the main to bring them up to speed to facilitate there own trade. They can't restrict access or set discriminatory fees. As he says an Australian Company bought the very big Port in the USA. China bought up the small Darwin Port in Australia with development conditions. It needed upgrading. They can never take it home. They are leases.

China thinks they can buy friends and allies with their money but they have no intention of being a friend to anyone. China's interest is China only. Everyone is expendable, even their own people. HK is prime example. US may have bases around the world and they do recruit people from those countries into their military. I have met many soldiers that joined the US military in exchange for citizenship. Again, US may have bases but they invest far more than just the bases. They invest in people. Last I checked no one, and I mean no foreigner joins the Chinese military. Who would be stupid enough to do so? Now they may own all the ports and such but the world is their enemy. No allies. No friends. Even Russia had to tap down China for infringing on their border. If that is your ally then who needs enemy. I'm sure that Russia keeps a close eye on their supposed ally. Pretty soon the world would boycott China's SHIT. China will collapse under their own debt. Would you exchange a US dollar for a Huang? Hell no. Its like trading real money for monopoly money. Worth less than the paper printed on. That is what I have learned.

Years ago, when the Japanese used to own Gold Coast real estate, a Japanese McKinsey managment consultant opined that you should question the patriotism of those who sold the properties as if you have a willing buyer and a willing seller, that is capitalism. Colly Cotton was stymied by the government and Gina Rinehart stepped in to assist the Chinese company acquired it as nobody was willing to pay the asking price and a company was setup with shareholding of Rinehart, eighty per cent and Chinese company, twenty per cent. Colly Cotton walked away with a profit from the sale. This would not have happened without the purchase. Sure the First Nation would have been happier if we do not intrude on their land but it is a historical fact now.

Jack Chapple In Australia the ports in question were leased not sold to Chinese investors. The leasehold is 99 years and can be terminated at any time. As of june 2020 all foreign investmants have been halted and are under review. Eg Port Darwin is used by China to load out mineral ores. I really do not think the CCP would try to berth naval ships in Darwin with the USS Enterprise parked up with a contingent of approximately 3000 marines whom are periodically rotated throughout our Northern states. The other ports around Australia have 49% foreign ownership of leaseholds. These leasholds can and will be terminated if and when the federal government deems them to be a Sovereign security risk.

If you're strong in manufacturing consumable goods, it makes economic sense to invest in your supply chain? Better than having a monopoly on military might? Owning port's is better than military bases around the world? The US mindset is blind to it's own shortcomings and quick to call out those who they can't control

Do a Dunn & Bradstreet and see who owns the shipping lines. Educate yourself and don’t buy into this video that is soo misleading and full of lies.

This video is absolutely perfect and it indicates that if China will take over the control of the trade routes and expand its own companies for its own economy then ultimately China will not only take over the control of trade in different countries but in fact it will take over the control of the economy of that country and many other sectors of those countries to rule over and run those countries and their governments as per their wish and benefits

America owning ports during WW2 is what allowed us access around the world. A BIG factor in us wining the war. We've sold and given away these ports and having a strong and the best naval fleet in the world does us no good if we can't move them. Tables have turned and the U.S. is at a great disadvantage. America has been living off a 75 yr reputation as a bad ass and America has not won a war since Couple that with depleted Arsenal because of all the useless engagements over the yrs. Poor leadership and a divided country America is like a 75 yr old boxer thrown back into the ring and may be overwhelmed by our next possible major war. As they say there's not another America to back us up and come to are rescue. We ARE in trouble. We may have to sit this one out. The CCP may just be deciding for Washington and Bejing Obiden to do just that.

Well, China can not just buy the port with dollars. China has to take the risk to invest and do the very hard (and sometimes dangerous) work to build the road, the pipe and the port, that boosts the local economics by training local workers, managers and researchers, creating jobs for the locals, etc.
