The overtime winner came as a result of a Paul Coffey poke check (he and teammate Mike Bossy both were rivals in the previous Spring's Stanley Cup Final) and Canada would advance to the finals to play Sweden, whom they would sweep in the best two-out-of-three final to win their second Canada Cup. Sweden has yet to win a Canada Cup/World Cup of Hockey to date, but have won championships in other international competitions. (Mike Bossy may or may not have been involved in the play that resulted in the goal.)

I can make a strong statistical argument that Mike Bossy was the greatest goal scorer in NHL history. The only people I will listen that could rival Bossy would be Alex Ovechkin and Mario Lemieux.

@@davester1970 Highest all time goals per game in NHL history. Highest all time shoooting percentage. Though some woulld argue that if Gretzky had only played ten seasons his wouldl be higher which may be true, but Bossy still second only to Gretzky. Most consecutive 50 goals seasons, ahead of Gretzky. And tied with Gretzky for most overall 50 goals seasons despite playing hall as many seasons. Every season he played was over 50 goals except for his last partial season. Second player in history after rocket richard to get 50 goals in 50 games. Fou stanley cups. I'm sure i missed something. Not an Islanders Fan but if Bossy had not have the back injury we wouldn't be looking at Gretzky passing Howe's record first but Bossy instead. Loved Mike Bossy and John Tonelli when they played on Team Canada in the 1984 Canada Cup but despised them when they played for the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Playoffs every year 1980 to 1984. Both were huge reasons how Team Canada was able to beat the Soviet Union in that Canada Cup. Both in their prime full health were a huge reason the Islanders won 19 straight Stanley Cup Playoff Series 1980 to 1984. Both Mike Bossy and John Tonelli were the Islanders oppositions worst nightmare trying to stop. Bossy before his back injury in the 1980s was so scary he don't look human. He looked like he was from another planet or world.

I think Bossy has the highest goals per game average in NHL history. Of course this is due to his carrer being cut short. Unforgettable goal! I remember exactly where I was watching this. I believe the Soviets were called for a penalty in this overtime, and I distinctly remember coach Viktor Tikhonov smirking in disbelief. However, Canada failed to score on the power play, setting the stage for this finish. I figured it was game over when the Soviets got that two-on-one, but Coffey played it for a pass and got it right! That's Darryl Sittler doing commentary alongside play-by-play man Ron Reusch. Bernie Pascal, who did the play-by-play in the inaugural 1976 Canada Cup and the 1981 Canada Cup, was the host this time around. CTV always seemed to do a great job of hosting this tournament.

Now that the NHL is all mixed and there's no Cold War, you don't get to see the battles of the two superpowers putting everything on the line to win at all costs. After a disappointing round robin Canada draws the undefeated Soviets in the semis, they come out strong and dominate in shots, yet nearly had this game stolen away by the Soviet goalie. Actually one of the best hockey games I've ever seen...underrated when we talk about classic Team Canada games. Tonelli was an absolute monster. For people who remember the team had not played well up to that point, the media was all over them and there were rumours of dissension between the Oiler and Islander players which made up a lot of the squad. They kind of game off the mat and put it together for the semis and final.

My favourite player of all time is Mario Lemieux and i think Lemieux is the best all around player of all time ( he played only a little over 900 games and half of them with cancer) and still holds many records and averaged 2 points per game for his career but i think Mike Bossy is the greatest goal scorer of all time. Definitely the most underrated when people talk about the best goal scorer’s. Bossy had 9 straight 50+ goal seasons and injury’s ended his career early but he still managed to hold the record even to this day with most goals per game average. Also six of his 50+ goal seasons, he did it in under 80 games, some even in less than 70 games. His last season was the only season he never scored 50 but he scored 38 in 68 games, so he would have definitely scored 50 if he played the full season or even 10 more games. Yep definitely the best goal scorer of all time. No argument there.

That was probably the loudest sustained crowd explosion/roar that I have ever heard in hockey. Interesting how Bossy was always known for his blistering, pinpoint accurate shot and one of the quickest releases in hockey history. But this, one of his most memorable goals...was a deflection. If the Soviets scored there 1:08 (cross check in front of the net by the Soviet player...negating a Canada scoring chance and starting up a Russian 2 on 1) would've been a major source of controversy in Canada I bet. But Paul Coffey made the defensive play of his life. And Tonelli was such a tenacious beast along the boards there. He would not be denied.

The Islanders players were outsiders on these Canada Cup and Challenge Cup teams. I don't know if players from other teams were envious of their success or what but If you'll notice, whenever a goal was scored, if Islanders, namely Potvin or Bossy was on the ice, they'd get a tap on the pads but no hugs, no smiles, no celebrating together. They were treated like mercenaries. Coffey and others were part of the in crowd so they all go flocking to him while Bossy is in the corner like, "Hey :( I'm over here. I scored the goal. Where's the love?" I mean, can you blame him? Look, this is not my imagination. I know Potvin liked to toot his own horn a lot, and players remember what Potvin said after the 1976 Canada Cup with Bobby Orr but even if Bossy wasn't the most humble player in the league, he often gave teammates credit. This was probably less of a thing with Sutter, Trottier and Tonelli, who were more highly respected as less spotlight seeking players.
@RRaquello
@RRaquello 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's because not only were the Islanders the step-child team in New York, but they were the first US based team to win more than two straight cups. Even though most of the Islander players were Canadian, the coverage naturally favored the Oilers, a Canadian based team, or the Canadiens, who won the 4 cups before the Islanders. Another thing, even within Canada, is that the Islanders were always thought to favor Western Canadian players (Trottier, Gillies, Goring, Henning, Nystrom, the Sutter Brothers, Bob Bourne, Gordie Lane), so they were on the outs with the eastern oriented Canadian media of Ontario & Quebec. Plus, they actually had American players on the team (Langevin & Morrow), and, horrors!, were the first Stanley Cup team to have Swedish players (Kallur, Stefan Persson, Tomas Jonsson). So they didn't fit in with the good ol' Toronto/Ontario boy matrix. They really were outsiders.

@@RRaquello You see during the celebration a glimpse of Bob Bourne but no Sutter there, no sight of Tonelli or Bossy, but lots of Messier and Goulet and Gretzky and Coffey. It makes me sick, really. It's not fair to say the Islanders after the four Stanley Cups and being the second best team behind the Canadiens a few years before that didn't get respect. But it's fair to say the enthusiasm and admiration about that team great, great team was missing big time. All of what you say is true but to me it doesn't explain this phenomenon. I mean, I don't think you can say the same for the Devils even though they were panned for being a boring trap team.

We didn't get to see this in the US. Maybe it was carried on one of the cable stations, but a lot of people didn't have cable in 1984. I remember trying to find a radio broadcast of it, but couldn't, and it was hard to even find out the score till the next day in the newspapers. What people forget was in the second half of the Islander dynasty, the first line wasn't Bossy-Trottier-Gillies, it was Bossy-Trottier-Tonelli. Gillies was moved to the second line and played with Duane & Brent Sutter, which was as good as a first line on every other team in the league besides Edmonton. Here they have Sutter with Bossy & Tonelli because Trottier played with Team USA in this tournament.

Well, for the most part, I suppose, but they didn't dominate the C-Cup in 1981, even though they won over Canada in that weird 8-1 final. Canada had beat them 7-3 in the round-robin and also had finished that preliminary round at the top of the field, undefeated. The Cup was theirs to lose, though we didn't expect it. But lose they did, their only loss of the tourney, including exhibition games prior to the tourney, if I recall correctly. But it was that sudden, stinging outcome that made the organizers revert back to a best-of-three C-Cup final series from then on.

I have to wonder if they produced hockey games differently in years past compared to today. The crowd noise was so intense back then. Today you can hear every sound of the puck, sticks and skates, but the crowd noise is dead. No atmosphere. Oh yeah, maybe it's because today's game is so technical, boring and lacking in passion compared to this '84 classic, and hockey in general from days gone by.

I wonder whether that puck was going in anyway whether Bossy deflected it or not? Bossy's stick is below the crossbar and Bossy's stick is behind the goalies glove when he tips it down. Doesn't matter. Great goal. Tonelli was as much or more to do with that goals as he maintains possession and gets the zone set up then gets puck to coffee-takes down two Russians behind the net then he goes to the corner and wins another battle after the rebound and gets the puck back to Coffey. Classic Canadian hockey shift.

Typical of the era. Two minute shifts were quite common. You stayed out longer but you rested longer. I think sometimes today we lose the momentum by changing so frequently and give up goals because teams are caught on a change. The safest andmost productive way to change lines is when the whistle blows. That prevents the "too many men on the ice" penalties that were quite uncommon in this generation andearlier.

If team Canada adopt the soviet style of having the best players and making a team, train them 11 months of the year and play against other nations including the Soviet Union we would be killing them all whole sale on the ice. Then again our best players can beat them as individuals in a team

Since no country is even close to having the same massive talent pool as Canada you should consider it a disgrace everytime you lose a game. And all those losing tournaments where your excuse has been that you didn't play with your best team shouldn't matter, since you have about 10 times more active players and amount of talent than any other nation. You should be good for at least 5 different national teams that are equally good as the best russian team with your talent pool.

@Midnightrambler3760 Nobody at that time referred to the '72 series as the Russia-Canada series. I saw each televised game. Canada vs. USSR (CCCP). All the play-by-play personnel and commentators referred to the players as the " Soviets." Any common references about the series being Russia/Canada came many years later, after the Soviet Union was dissolved ('91).

Lets not forget Bossy's devastating back injury from a dirty cheap shot that eventually put an end to his NHL career in 1987. Bossy and Lemieux never got as much NHL protection that Gretzky had for years. Neither did Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe or Bobby Orr. In fact NHL created the Wayne Gretzky Rule after he was hit hard in a 1980-1981 Regular Season Game. Bossy was on NHL record setting fire in the 1980s before his dirty cheap shot back injury.
