The most telling thing: management gets a bonus, but workers get laid off.

I’m not sure how the bonus works in the structure of their pay. For example, if they’re to bring in $1 million worth of business, why shouldn’t they get a bonus? The workers are inflexible . They have a defined benefit, pension, full benefits, and good wages … but when it comes to working packages on the weekend, it becomes a problem? Losing $3 billion is the first hint .

No private business in the world runs a deficit of nearly $1b a year while top executives make $400-700k a year. Government workers need accountability to taxpayers. We need the department of government efficiency here in Canada
@veets207
@veets207 3 күн бұрын
@@douglaszimmerman1768 the problem is because nobody's salary comes from taxpayers money, your point about accountability is a moot. However as directors of a crown Corporation, they can't keep accumulating deficits upon deficits and rewarding themselves with bonuses. A lot of their spending is actually on what they call strategic investments, for example building a half billion dollar plant to modernize their logistics and stay competitive in the parcel market, purchasing fuel efficient and electric vehicles for their delivery fleet, and purchasing carbon credits so they can claim that their parcel deliveries are carbon neutral. So why are employees so upset that they are ready to strike? There's a lot happening that is very complicated to explain. Most employees make between 23 to 33$ per hour. The job has changed. Yes lettermail has decreased, but that's no excuse because strategically, management is missing the target which is to expand Canada Post services as is being done in other countries, modernize the post office, and take their rightful share of the parcel market. Just so you know, we did not strike during the pandemic in order to serve Canadians during a very difficult time. Canada Post served Canadians during the entire pandemic with the hopes of being rewarded further in time. The time has come.

Well I am a small business that relied on the post office to ship orders, them doing this at the busiest time of year is a cheap shot to all small businesses and they should be ashamed picking now just because they think it will make them accept their demands. This is actually hurting my business hard.
@pabloplato
@pabloplato 4 күн бұрын
as a small business reliant on Canada post for shipments you must also agree that the cost to ship packages across Canada is prohibitively high (compared to national package delivery costs in other countries). they would help their situation if they lowered their parcel costs so small businesses would be able to compete against giants like amazon prime, without having to rely on third party shipment providers for a lower, more competitive price.

I sell on several different sites. Spent the day and learned to use Chit Chats to ship my open orders. They have good rates and it took less time than I expected to figure it out. No drop off location near me so I did have to schedule a pickup from my home to get my box of parcels but that was only $25 extra and the cheap rates more than made up for it. It feels good to not be at the mercy of Canada Post anymore, though there are already a bunch of my customers' orders being held by them from last week that I may end up having to refund.

How else are workers suppose to negotiate for fair wages and benefits when companies won't play ball. Why is the default from citizens to blame the "workers" not the corporations? If they negotiated in faith this wouldn't be an issue every 2 years. But every 2 years the "company" does the same thing and stalls until the last min. Forcing the workers to strike. The workers strike when it's inconvenient for the public to put pressure on the corp. to negotiate and every time the government steps in and says NONONO you can't do this cuz mail is essential. Well it is essential and if it was so easy anyone would do it. and all the private companies would deliver to those rural homes no one else will. Canada Post is dying because it is no loner competitive. Canada Post keeps talking about diversify itself to offer other services. Postal rates keeps going up. Sending parcels within Canada are ridiculously high when compared sending the same sized and weight parcels to the USA. As a rural resident who has dealt with the same rural post office for 35 years, I can't tell you how great the workers are there. They don't want to be on strike. It's ridiculous that Canada Post has allowed this negotiation to go a whole year and they take a pay hike while not wanting to give a pay raise to workers. Canada Post....maybe it is time to put it out of itself to bed because it obviously isn't looking out for Canadians who depend on its service.

I used to work at Canada Post. I have seen the kind of workers there- very lazy. They do not finish the job on weekdays so they can have an overtime on weekends. I see people just chatting and some just hang out in the washroom until break time. Supervisors can’t do anything as it is Unionized. This is ran by majority of one race, about 85% and they are so lazy and just slack off. I heard of stories about bribery/ nepotism etc just to get a permanent position or promotion. And family members and relatives worked together. Some of the employees there knew there will come a time CP will close because of how it is being handled. CP do not need that much people inside the warehouse to work, if the workers only work. Most often times, during my time there, someone will come to me and say, tomorrow is another day don’t work too hard or we will not have overtime this weekend. I left CP in less than a year.

According to CBC Tue, November 19, 2024 at 7:26 p.m. EST· Service Canada is holding 85,000 passports as Canada Post strike continues. Employment and Social Development Canada said that "in anticipation of a potential labour disruption," Service Canada stopped mailing passport packages on Nov. 8 - a week before Canada Post workers walked off the job. They lied. They sent my passport to Canada Post on November 12th - so now I am S.O.L. and the Passport Office won’t answer the phone, won’t offer an email address, won’t give me any way to find out what, if anything, can be done to get my passport to me. The new plant she was talking about was started long before covid and the long term economic costs of many shut downs. After all those shut downs all mail and packages volumes started to decline. The crazy carbon tax the liberals have put out there also affect CP. In short CP has higher costs of operation while mail and package volumes decline. Take a job with Canada Post then. They're almost always hiring. You want to know why? Because over 50% of new employees quit once they realize they have to work YEARS as an on-call worker with no benefits and sporadic pay/hours until they get a full-time position. Those who actually make it to the full time jobs (which still less pay than most other major couriers) have paid their dues in full.

Business can’t pay other carrier because it’s comparatively lot more expensive,remote parts of our people can’t find any other carrier,that’ll do the business because it’s not profitable and many many more other reasons…… yet for small convenience, we choose to give more business to other carrier in urban settings then canadapost…

Yeah, I guess it's totally abusing the taxpayers when the management get huge pay raises yet CP is still losing money. how is that the union abusing taxpayer dollars when the union has nothing to do with management? Canada is cooked. We've lost all critical thinking skills. It's almost like the people doing all the work want to be compensated rather than letting three people in an office who make more money than 10 or 20 workers who are actually delivering the mail have all the power to make decisions. F**k that. Defund the cbc while we're at it.

@@surrendersurrender7152 Yeah, yeah it is, it is a Crown Corporation, which me it is under the purview of the government. Via Rail is also a Crown corporation. As is CBC. - Crown corporations are wholly owned federal or provincial organizations that are structured like private or independent companies. They include enterprises such as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), VIA Rail, Canada Post and the Bank of Canada; as well as various provincial electric utilities. - The Minister of Public Service and Procurement is responsible for Canada Post. The role of the minister is to determine the broad policy direction of the corporation while respecting its operational autonomy in other matters. Ministerial responsibility for Canada Post was transferred in November 2015. Both sourced from Google, I just typed in "is canada post a crown corporation."

@@amoosavi Nothing offensive. I respect everyone's comment as long as they are based on the true facts. I think the biggest challenge is Canada Post is committed to providing services every inch of Canadian land but the private companies just provide services to the highest density area with a higher price. Because Canada Post is a crown corporation so it cannot choose to run the business the same way like the private companies. So too bad. I just got laid off after working 7 years with Canada Post.Thanks for reading.

Strike won’t end Executives won’t negotiate. Executives salaries and bonuses are guaranteed. They own Purolator and a couple other courier services. So they make more money during strike as other couriers get busier. Not sure why this isn’t a conflict of interest and why bonuses are guaranteed. Also they have cut pay by more than 15% from 5 years ago then offer 11% of 5 years and they won’t guarantee another pay cut.

Get off the street she back to work **** every year you guys are on strike looking for a raise. Imagine if you was getting minimum wage like a majority of other Canadians. You guys already make more than minimum wage and don't need neither other wage increase, All your doing is driving people and businesses away from Canada Post. You won't have either job soon, greed get you nowhere and I hope Karma finds you pretty soon. Just sickening you choose this time of year to strike when you had all year to do so, pathetic id is all the workers are you don't work hard enough and only trying take advantage. Suck it up and get to work like everybody else has to. Imagine if you had to work 7 days a week 8+ hours.

Good job, Union. You forced me to finally spend the day learning to use Chit Chats to bypass Canada Post for my small business. I'm just a little guy but I spend 10k a year on postage and I'll be strongly encouraging other Canadian sellers to use alternative shipping now that I've seen it isn't that complicated to be free from Canada Post's constant rate hikes and union strikes.

Canada Post is a Crown corporation that is funded by revenue from the sale of its products and services, not taxpayer dollars. Canada Post is able to operate despite losses because it is ultimately backed by taxpayers and can borrow money at lower costs than its competitors. Canada Post is responsible for serving Canadians and operating in a financially self-sustaining manner. The corporation is accountable to Canadians and Parliament by reporting its financial results. Canada Post has faced financial challenges in recent years, including: 2022: Reported a loss before tax of $548 million 2024: Reported a loss from operations of $490 million in the first six months, compared to $371 million in the same period of 2023
