Come join us for an epic Canada Road Trip as we hop in a vehicle with Togo and Audrey's parents traveling out east to visit the Maritimes Provinces. After a highly successful road trip in Canada last fall to visit British Columbia and Alberta to see the Canadian Rockies, we decided to reunite the travel squad of Audrey's Mom and Dad and Togo the German Shepherd to see Atlantic Canada.
The first day we packed all of our suitcases in the rental vehicle, a spacious Ford Flex, pulling out of Brampton, Ontario early in the morning. The first day we drove a bit further than Montreal crossing provinces from Ontario to Quebec. We made time to visit Audrey's Uncle who lives in Montreal before arriving in our cabin for the evening. Unfortunately, the mosquitos were so bad that we spent our initial moments swatting them as opposed to relaxing. After getting rid of most of them we cracked upon a bottle of wine to celebrate the first day of driving on this road trip. It was a busy day since we had to bypass the two biggest cities in Canada (Toronto and Montreal) and traffic at times was hectic.
The second day involved a little bit less driving as we headed towards the maritime provinces of New Brunswick. Once we bypassed Quebec City the highways really cleared and sections were almost bare. We noticed as we crossed into New Brunswick that we could see more forests, mountains and signs warning us about Moose crossings.
One of the highlights was stopping in Hartland to visit the longest covered bridge in the world. Upon arriving in Fredericton it felt like coming home since my Mom and Dad live there. This is just the start of our road trip in Canada as we plan to visit New Brunswick, Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) and Prince Edward Island covering all of the Maritimes. We hope you'll join us for the next episode from New Brunswick!

That was fun! Thanks for taking us along. We used to do road trips when I was a kid. 6 kids and both parents in a 69 Cutlass Oldsmobile SS pulling a smaller egg shaped trailer across the country. 3 girls on the dinette bed, our parents on the couch bed and 3 boys in the overhead bunk. One night or two we rented a cabin and we thought we were ‘in high cotton ‘. We stopped at a market for groceries every evening and mom would cook dinner. One night she fixed pasta and served all of us a glass of wine. Maybe wine spritzers for the younger ones (6 and 8). I was a teenager and really flattered that they thought me old enough to join them for wine. It wasn’t until I had kids of my own that I realized what their motives were. BTW - mosquitoes hate lavender. Since you keep it, anyway, put some in a little travel spray bottle with some alcohol and water or glycerin and water and shake it before you use it then spritz your hair, arms, shirt and legs. Even your socks before you put it on. No need to do it pure as it will use an entire bottle for one person. Diluting it with alcohol and water will spritz in finer droplets to give you good coverage without using the entire bottle and putting the dog to sleep. If you spritzed your hair in the morning, you probably wouldn’t need to put any on the dog though some is helpful. A couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil makes it better still, but can be toxic to some animals so not too much and not for long periods. The spritz on dogs will deliver the lavender more broadly on their fur but a little goes a long way so maybe 10 drops of lavender, 2 of tea tree (if you use it), about a quarter of an inch or 5mm in the little bottle then top it off with water. Lastly, sorry my messages are long but I fostered dogs like your shepherd. Huskies. And Great Pyrenees. They get nervous, as you noted, in unfamiliar surroundings. And though all of my fosters liked to go for rides with me, there was panic the first few trips because humans took them for rides then left them at shelters, the woods, somewhere. ANYWAY, I keep Rescue Remedy because it also helps ease the panic. Just some ideas. I was in medicine, for humans not animals. I moved to the Smoky Mountains in the US and returned to school to earn a Master Herbalist so that I developed a better understanding of mountain medicine that many of my patients would use. I had to study animal husbandry, but not a whole lot. Just some general knowledge, dangerous substances and helpful herbs and oils. But I am not an expert. I have 42 years of experience in medicine but only did 3 years of clinical seeing patients alongside regular physicians a couple of times a week. I still had a “real job” (not to lessen my clinical experience with herbal medicine) to pay my bills and I don’t consider that enough experience to even suggest expertise. These are just things I have found that worked well for me and my dogs over the years. Be careful exposing cats to tea tree. But I have used it to remove layers of fleas on abandoned kittens. I was careful and would suggest the same. Always diluted and not routinely. Shutting up now. Thanks!
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing all these tips, Rebecca! We'll sure keep these in mind for our next trip. It's good to know lavender oil can keep the mosquitoes at bay. Also, that sounds like quite a memorable road trip with your family. 😊

How Lucky Togo is to be getting a species appropriate whole foods meat, vegetables and starch diet (for the true omnivore that he is) and not some commercial diet with a whole bunch of scraps, kibble and additives. Yes! Go Canada! I've lived in Toronto my whole life so this is awesome to watch! Plus my friends and I plan on doing a Maritime road trip next summer so this is great! You mentioned Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I, may I ask why you aren't visiting Newfoundland as well? We hope to add it to our road trip so just wondering if its doable or not. Once again! Loving this road trip and excited to see more!
