Why not give us a huge break at the pumps. For being an oil producing country it is criminal what we pay for gas. It is the country's oil so taking it from us then selling back at huge rates should not be allowed. We should also refine it in country instead of shipping it out then back to us again and have more steady refining jobs instead of temporary construction jobs.

I'm all for this, in light of the current political situation. I'm tired of the US pulling our strings and holding petty issues (dairy tariffs) against us. I say, sell our oil to the Asians and stop selling to the US, and while we're at it, turn off the taps that feed the US. We need to find alternative buyers for our crude, so that we don't have to play second fiddle to US political moods. While we're at it, let's invest and build a refinery or 2 so that we can produce or own gas and sell it to Canadians at a discount, instead of shipping crude to the US, letting them refine it, then ship it back to us at inflated prices.

Actually to send bitumen through a pipeline it needs to be treated (diluted) and heated, unlike a rail car where the bitumen is more solid. Sure, the frequency of rail spills is greater on rail, but the volume lost is less and easier to clean up. Oil tankers are the real threat, which would be increased 7x

All this debate around the pipeline is taking focus away from the REAL ISSUE!!! The debate shouldn't be on if a pipeline expansion is good or bad, or if we need it or not, or if it is good for the Canadian economy or not. The real debate should be this: Can this money be spend on other projects? How does the cost-benefit analysis look for these alternative projects look when compared to the pipeline expansion? The Harper government has stalled Canada in technological advances for 10 years. We had failed to diversify our economy when the oil price was high. This is why the Canadian dollar was hit so hard when the oil price dropped. We should learn from that mistake, and 1) shift the economy away from resource extraction, 2) diversify the economy and 3) invest in technology. For or against pipeline expansion, you cannot deny the fact that oil is on it's way out. We are running out of oil to burn and we are increasingly shifting away from using oil. The Canadian government needs to have more foresight and prepare for this inevitability. Wouldn't it be great if we become the world leader in whatever technology that replaces oil in the future, instead of struggling to survive as the world demand for oil twiddles? We can learn so much from Norway.

Why is this country so bent on selling crude oil, in today’s world of trying to turn green why wouldn’t we build refineries here where the refining process can be somewhat policed. We pay inflated prices for fuel at the pumps because we don’t refine enough fuel for our own country and have to import. The Chinese want our fuel but to sell them crude would definitely fan the fires of global pollution as I’m sure they would be refining right on the boat on the way home dumping overburden into the ocean. If we have to sell off our natural resources it would make more sense to sell a finished product all while doing the world a favour by processing here.
@daviddavis56895 жыл бұрын
Its like the US really. Trying to build a new refinery is near impossible to even estimate the end cost. Not even the number of years to get clearance is known much less final cost. This is testimony by Lloyd's experts on subject. There for no one wants to build what cost is unknown or finish time. That is why in US what is and has happened is huge expansion of existing refineries. Much of the pump price reflects taxes as it is in States where the price varies widely plus special blends required for weather or environmental laws. Really no different than auto cost that burns the fuel. Government provided benefits have cost in taxes on someone.

Thank you for sharing that Canada emits 1.7% of the world emissions, this might seem like a small number to you but considering we only make up 0.466% (35million/7.5billion) of the worlds population, we are polluting significantly more than our share. Further you said canada is one of the greenest countries in the world, this is inaccurate unless your referring to the color of the landscape. The fact is Canada scores a grade of "D" among its peer countries, countries like switzerland, UK, Norway, Belgium and several others rank above Canada in terms of the environment. Finally, Canada is not a acting as a sink, it is still carbon positive, meaning it produces more carbon than our forests can consume. Keep in mind most of our land is covered in ice and ice consumes no carbon. The study you seemed to have gotten your statement from assumed all of Canada's land is capable of carbon consumption. Our forests also aren't very good at consuming carbon, the tropical forests (not located in Canada) are significantly better at consuming carbon. Projects like these pipelines threaten to destroy the unspoiled wilderness you are referring to, just because we have it now doesn't mean we can be reckless in its treatment and expect it to stay so magnificent.
@bovellois6 жыл бұрын
Meanwhile our dear forests that were not farmed properly went up in smoke last summer, so there goes our CO2 balance sheet, out the window. Coniferous forests that are left untouched for 50 years turn into a giant gasoline can.

1,000,000 liters over almost 70 years!! Why don't you tell us how many milliliters it would be??? 1,000,000 liters is about 85,000 barrels and the Deep Water Horizon was spilling that almost per day. Plus the technology is better now the Scada shuts the pipeline down pretty much the instance the oil coming out doesn't equal the oil going in, so these large spills are much more unlikely now.
@daviddavis56895 жыл бұрын
The reality is crude is made into 30K essential products besides gasoline. We might replace by 2030 most gasoline vehicles at best but that leaves a huge number of other products needing replacement to eliminate fossil fuels. Heck china is allowed to increase its carbon pollution levels until 2030 when it has to start reduction and plus India is majority of increased carbon released in air. If one shifts sooner then it has at least huge initial cost to production cost and GDP One always has to remember that crude is a natural product ;its the refined products that are not. Crude can be easily made to fertilizer by adding bacteria for example. The oceans bottom leaks crude after all constantly.
@tomusa97815 жыл бұрын
No 1,000,000 liters is 6,290 barrels or an average of 90 barrels a year. If a little leaks out it's not the end of the world. Here's a great idea. Lets turn off the tap to all oil that flows to BC. The hypocrites only seem to want just enough oil to power their vehicles. Any fuel that would be remotely available would rise to over $2.00/liter. Maybe they would prefer more tanker traffic to import their oil from the corrupt dictatorship of Venezuela. Alberta could tighten the screws so hard that the hypocritical eco-freaks would be walking to protests in support of pipelines.

Sale the crude South to the USA for les or sealing it in the West at going rate? Which one? Transporting it by train or by pipe? A pipe going one way at high pressure and speed emptying directly to the oil tanker vs train wagons going across the Rocky Mountains and then empty one or two at the time? Mmmm which one is more economical If a train transporting crude oil derails, the mess in all in the surface, and then seeps in. and there is no way to stop the wagons to empty themselves vs automatic valves that if any changes of pressures is detected, it shoots down the flows. The main social pressure must be in pouting the valves at close intervals, and in all sensitive areas, oblige the pipeline to fill the area with oil absorbing materials, that in case of accident or sabotage, will be minimise, contained and clean up and recuperated. There are big interests from the South of the border, to continue to sale South cheap. It happens with all our resources, electricity, gas, oil, timber, minerals….. Is this the main mission of Canada? To sale cheap and in largest possible quantities to the USA? Is this our main right? Wake up, both sides of the debate, Canada need the revenues, the jobs, but also the security that it is done properly, and guaranteed. The owners must be liable and must be bonded for performance, as any builder The other one will be FAIR MONETARY COMPENSATION TO THE AFECTED LAND OWNERS

Orcas will be driven out of here due to noise by ships and lack of food, not to mention if it spills some of the effects it will have will ruin the coast. Most people in Canada don’t understand this very much. Not to mention it will spill cause we are in an earthquake active area so if a big earthquake happens it will be very bad. The pipeline benefits Canadians. We’re talking royalties, taxes, jobs. A spill is not guaranteed, but if the pipeline is not built, we ARE guaranteed to lose out on billions (as we already are). The States are on track to be leading global oil production by end of 2018, all the while buying our oil at an absolutely ridiculous discount, because Alberta has no other market available. Why some people can’t accept environmental risk for economic prosperity while simultaneously investing in green energy, I will never understand.

@SS08956 жыл бұрын
Alexi Thunderbird we are investing in more refineries, so that does help us from buying back. We’re selling at huge discounts because we have no one else to sell to, and the pipelines are backed up. Naturally the US will say “if we’re your only customer, then we’ll take it for half”. We have no choice. With coast access, we can sell oil to whoever at full price. Spills may or may not happen, it’s not a given. There’s a whole industry on prevention and remediation so obviously we do what we can
