The two greatest teams ever assembled.....& the three greatest hockey games ever played....

I don't think hockey has ever been played @ such a high level before or after this series.

Wayne Gretzky played 50 minutes in this game. He got one assist for every ten minutes he played. He pissed himself on the bench before the second overtime because he was so tired he couldn't control his bladder. True story.

Yep. Best hockey ever played. Two best teams ever and even though Canada won really they were totally even. All games 6-5, 2 in overtime..They could have played 10 games and it would have gone back and forth like that. And damn...Gretzky .....You never know..but I'm really thinking no one will ever touch what he's done. It's pretty obvious crosby isn't even going to come close now.

I purchased the Blade Wars DVD set with all three games shown (aside from some cuts in between faceoffs and a few seconds missing in one game, but nothing major) in their entirety. Hockey doesn't get any better than those three games. One of the best purchases I've made, especially since it's so hard to find now.

Yes, many people have called it the greatest game ever played... certainly the best series of all time. I was lucky to be there that night to see it, and told my wife before it was over that people would talk about that game in superlatives. In a recent interview, Gretzky said it was probably his best game ever. He and Lemieux were magic. To set the record straight re shots on goal, they were 61-50 for Canada... 39-32 in regulation time and 22-19 during the 30:07 of overtime.

Gretzky was so tired after the OT, he actually pissed his pants. I read it in his book.
@PonAdidas14 жыл бұрын
Gretzky had 3 goals and 18 assists for 21 points in 9 games and was named MVP. Lemieux had 11 goals and 7 assists for 18 points in 9 games. He also scored the game winners in game 2 and 3.

Read the book GTEZKY TO LEMIEUX : A HISTORY OF THE 1987 CANADA CUP. Great behind the scenes stories for the greatest 3 games of ice hockey ever played anywhere anytime. This speed, intensity, and pure skill and instinctual improv jazz like hockey was never repeated. Not even close.

this canadian team was the best ever of any hockey team imho. the russians were close, but Gretzky--Lemieux would always given the balance to Canada. There is just no team that ever had that combo.

Good thing Keenan never asked Patrick Roy to play. It never would've gotten to Game 3 - and that famous goal. So it all worked out in the end.

@asdver The urban legend is that Belosheikin and Alexei Gusarov went out drinking in November 1987 and picked up a couple of women in the bar. They took them back to their apartment, the women slipped something into their drinks and they were knocked unconscious and got robbed. After that Belosheikin's eyesight was screwed and he had serious liver problems. He was a pretty good goalie but he could never make the the Oilers in that condition. That's probably why he committed suicide too.

About 1987, Roy wasn't quite the legendary animal/athlete until a couple of years later. Considering Jean Perron was assistant coach, I thought he could have brought Roy in this tournament as 3rd goalie. In 1991, Sean Burke was the 3rd goalie... I'm not sure why they chose him. Perhaps it was because the Habs already had 3 representatives for Canada (Corson, Courtnall & Desjardins). Still, it would have been quite a battle for number 1 spot back then with Bill Ranford and Ed Belfour.

Well Roy had won the Conn Smythe in '86 but looked wonky in the '87 playoffs. Fuhr was the right guy to go with. Ron Hextall also had just come off a Conn Smythe more fresh in people's minds. Not sure why Roy wasn't the other man instead of Kelly Hrudey though- who you see on the bench dressed for these games. Maybe his infamous drive to win made him turn down the chance to be a 3rd goalie. Bigger question is why was Roy not on the '91 team? He usually didn't enjoy being a backup.

I just read a huge story on the St. Petersburg UCKA site about Belosheikin.(Thanks to Babel fish.)Although it seams to be true about the woman drugging and robbing Gusarov and Belosheikin. He played 42 games the next year with it 1.42 GAA does not seam to have slowd him down much. The former Trainer (Guy who wrote the story) Thinks he fell out of favor with Tikinov after rendez-vours'87. In which Tikinov turned his favor to Irbe. He also said he thought Belosheikin was better then Irbe was.

Many who say this series was the "best hockey ever played"- with its 11 goals per game, awful goalies and porous D-- also claim that the neutral zone trap era was "beautiful." How can both be true? Just seems like pundits change their criteria to suit the narrative. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
