We finally test out the CanaDart flechette rounds from Canada. These were quite difficult to develop a load for so they didn't self-destruct.

Thanks for another great video. Over the course of watching your channel the one thing that's irrefutable is the more complicated and esoteric the design of the projectile, the less successful it will be, with a few exceptions. The one thing that consistently impresses me is how you manage to work out the loadings for such a huge variety of projectiles. Thanks again!
@TheOriginalFaxon
@TheOriginalFaxon 3 ай бұрын
Yea i think the biggest exception to that is the polymer slugs with a beveled carbide tip, that were able to punch through a level 4 plate like a hole punch. The carbide tip was sticking out from the resin, so all the energy of the whole slug was applied over a much smaller diameter, giving it the oomph to start breaking through the plate before the rest of the slug completely broke up behind it. That would still be a lethal hit most likely, unless you were wearing a second layer of soft armor behind your plates. Also would probably just break up if it hit a ceramic plate, though I've no idea how it would react to a polymer one.

3D printing/modeling expert here, please consider the following: Use a carbon fiber nylon body for the flechette with a space to screw in arrowheads. Use TPU or Nylon for the sabot to avoid the brittle shattering. ..PS curious about the max range, I theorize the aerodynamics of this flechette will provide more accuracy and range than a typical slug!

First off, a very cool modern version of a "howdah pistol". Second, you are correct about our draconian firearms laws in Canada and yes "flechette" ammo is illegal here. Having said that, you could argue that our law considers a "flechette", to be multiple darts in a single hull.

the flechette or dart of a sabot can actually be put in the REAR of the sabot with a couple thin metal driving plates (copper advised) that are near the bore diameter of the interior of the shell. The cool bit about using copper is you can hammer them back flat and use em again. You can also use the copper plates between shock wads on regular loads.

Windex is the best cleaner for black powder, hands down. Also the best cleaner for any gun that's shooting corrosive surplus ammo, back when Yugo spam cans were cheap my AK and SKS cleaning procedure was brush > windex > dry patches > 10w30 motor oil for rust prevention, since that's essentially what came in those 2-chamber bottles they were issued with. The non-oil chamber was full of an ammonia-and-soap water-based cleaner that is fundamentally the same as original-formula Windex. Been doin black powder since I was 7 years old, and my old TC Renegade's still got a perfect bore.

For anyone who doesn't know, the drawback with Pyrodex as a blackpowder substitute is that it burns very poorly in an open air space. For loading cartridges, and for loading the chamber of a muzzle loader, this isn't a problem as the powder gets enclosed and it can burn like it should. In this case, Pyrodex is overall adequate. For using it as priming powder though, like with a flintlock, wheellock, or matchlock, Pyrodex thus functions EXTREMELY poorly. The burn takes much longer, noticeably increasing lock time, and very often just fizzles out, obviously that's no good. Some people in some places have a hard time finding anything but Pyrodex, so I can see some developing a tacit resentment. Pyrodex has its place though, and if you're willing you can plain use it as a propellant, while using small batches of home made true blackpowder just for priming the relevant gun (it's VERY easy to make basic blackpowder, it's a powder blend of charcoal, sulfur, and nitrates, ideally potassium nitrate).

LEAD PLATEEEE
@Stevo_1998
@Stevo_1998 3 ай бұрын
Part of their brittleness might be due to the plastic ageing. I've had things I've... 'additively plastically created' become brittle over the course of like 2-3 years, even though it's not near a heat source and/or direct sunlight. I doubt they got _much_ weaker over a year of waiting, but it's possible. The other thing of course, is the fact there's a ton of ribbing (for design?) on the main body of the dart, and that's just adding like 10+ stress risers for it to break in half from. If you've ever seen an arrow being shot from a bow, the middle bends back and forth quite drastically. Obviously these aren't long enough for that to be noticeable, but they may be doing that with enough powder loaded, and the ribbing is providing a good point of concentration for it to just break clean in half.
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 3 ай бұрын
I started testing them immediately after receiving them. They broke apart using extremely light powder loads. People don't realize how much stress the components are under.

@@taofledermaus I meant with the blackpowder stuff, when a piece of the sabot hit the target, it shattered in to a bunch of pieces. Normally stuff made using a 3D device only tends to split along the lines and not across them. But either way, the main contributing factor to them snapping a lot would have just been the ribbing in the middle of the shaft of the dart.

I have a .45/ .410 firearm, which has pretty poor accuracy with .45 colt cartridges, so I decided to make my own .45 bullets to improve accuracy. I concluded that a heeled wadcutter bullet, with a cupped base would keep the bullet going straight down the smooth bore, until it engages the rifling. Smokeless powder resulted in the soft lead cup getting mangled, but pyrodex worked beautifully. I get about 1000 fps, and accuracy similar to a .45 colt only barrel. The cupped base appears to increase backpressure, to get optimal burn out of the pyrodex. Pyrodex certainly has its uses.

Yep, that’s called lost-PLA casting. It can also be done with wax (investment casting/lost-wax). Casting sand like Petrobond sand is great for making molds as well. There’s a type of ceramic slurry that is used in conjunction with fine sand to make molds. It apparently works very well for lost-PLA casting. The printed model (with sprues) is repeatedly dipped in the slurry then the fine sand. After drying, it’s fired in a kiln to melt out the PLA, and harden the ceramic. I don’t remember what the slurry is called called though. The lost-PLA with a Petrobond mold method is the cheapest, and most reliable way to go in my opinion. No kiln required. Petrobond is fairly cheap too. It just needs to be packed down thoroughly, the two halves, and the printed part dusted with talcum powder, etc.

Jeff, you may already know this but you can do the same thing with little tony the break action single barrel. Just load in the primed brass section with plastic hull removal and then load from the muzzle. Buy a pack of primers and deprime/reprise the brass portion for each shot. This is actually a common way to use a single shot as a black powder shotgun for hunting and very effective. Dave Canterbury has a great instructional video on this subject. This may help with other projectiles that you have been sent. Great video as always!

Sad what happened to the fellow in the UK, as for here in Canada, projectiles, brass and primers are not regulated, so no need to worry about having a Canadian send you projectiles.

Is it the pressure that's destroying the AM-sabots? If so, would a longer barrel with slow burning powder allow for better/same speed without as much of a shattering impact to the sabot?

Flechette cartridges are prohibited in Canada. Buddy may be squeaking around the law by making the projectiles but not loading them. But he's playing a dangerous game, especially with who's in charge up there. It probably would have been a lot smarter to not mention where these came from. I'm sure the RCMP is watching this and taking tons of notes.

3:25 you know if those were printed they're either made out of PLA or ABS which are both hard and brittle plastic. I think the sabot must be made out a material with more elasticity. Like the kylon projo you shot before.

Great video again guys. You mention that you are measuring powder by weight, but it looks like you are measuring it by volume. I would like to see a 1 ounce buckshot load with 100 grains of blackhorn 209 powder shot into ballistic gel to measure penetration ( deer hunting load). Blackhorn is less Smokey but requires two nitro cards over powder and one nitro card over shot to get the powder to burn completely.

As a scot, we can't own air rifles without a license, we can't own replica airsoft weapons without a license, every day working men and women's guns are seized, they protect our nature our eco system and put food on our tables, there forearms are then seized for possibly years stopping them being able to provide for there families and or look after there farm and protect there livestock. Firearms aren't fir self defence here, there used to keep nature in check and and provide income. America, even california, your lucky

Shows how much work you have to put in when people send you the projectile, and you have to work out how to load them. That and how hard it is to shoot 3d printed items. The ballistic gummy bear is amazingly clear, could hardly see it. Almost like the Predator! 😂
