As a Canadian who lived in Rome for 6 months I was shocked at stolen/counterfeit merchandise being sold on blankets on the sidewalks, the traffic laws are completely ignored, people park triple and quadruple deep, thievery and pickpockets just everywhere. I had a good time but you could not relax in public and must be aware at all times.

This was so interesting to watch - I'm British and I've just spent 3 and a half months in Italy for my semester abroad! So crazy that Italian has twice the amount of words in the language that English has - I didn't know that, but kind of makes sense as I've been learning Italian intensively for two years now and still come across a lot of new words every day 😂😅 I talk about my experience with Italy/Italian a lot on my channel too 😊 I was only really in northern Italy but I'd absolutely LOVE to go to southern Italy some day 😍🇮🇹 What's your favourite part of Italy that you've been to so far?? Looking forward to seeing how you get on! 🌟

What an exciting adventure to be studying abroad! Southern Italy is a whole new world.. Different cuisine, different mentality, different lifestyle! I love so many parts of Italy, but unlike you, have mostly spent my time in the South (and in lockdown as I'm sure you know!). The Amalfi Coast is stunning - I think my favourite town is Positano. Alberobello was a very unique experience and the region of Puglia felt very Mediterranean. We also got up to Toscana at one point.. Felt like heaven! As a Canadian that comes from a relatively new country, everything here seems to take my breath away! (Except the littering, lol. Yuck.)

Its true, there is seating! But in my travels and experiences - people will drink at the bar, and maybe chat for a few minutes, and then leave. I work in cafes, and I’m there most if the day.. Sometimes the retirees come to socialize, and a few others, but nothing like back home where cafe’s are usually packed with people who are either on dates, or at meetings, or studying, or working, or just socializing.. It’s different. How would you compare cultures in 8-10 minutes without making broader generalizations? I’m genuinely curious! I’d like to record another video this weekend and the feedback would be appreciated.

The Italians are great hand talkers 😂 So there’s always a universal way to communicate. Joking aside, I personally didn’t struggle with the lack of English. Im pretty quick to pick up new languages and I grew up with Calabrese Nonni, so I already knew some Italian dialect. Sadly, wasn’t very useful in the region where I live as we use a completely different dialect.. But that’s a struggle even for Italians: the dialects 😅
@hugolafhugolaf
@hugolafhugolaf 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheModernHippieProject Being from Québec, the latin roots of both french and italian are obvious (spanish is easier and even closer to french), so understanding is not that hard. Speaking is another game though. Didn't know that about dialects. Fascinating. I know that part of the Dolomites speak Ladin; the street signs (and some other «official» signs) are often in both languages, even though the number of native speakers is only like 40 000 people.

Come on, you can't say it's a cultural shock to find out people don't speak your language when it is not the language of the country. It shows you didn't bother to learn about the region. That's a very Anglo thing - I speak Spanish, which by number of speakers it is the second largest group, and never expect others to speak it when I'm somewhere where it is not their main language.
@TheModernHippieProject
@TheModernHippieProject 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, this day and age, I really don’t think it’s strange or naive to expect a certain level of English to be spoken in ANY country. It’s the “universal” language. I’ve done a fair bit of travel and there is usually at least a basic understanding of English (at least for tourism sake).. But it definitely depends on the country. Those travelling to Italy might want to prepare or learn a little Italian beforehand, and that’s why I mention it. It was a bit of a shock to me, and I’m sure it will be a bit of a shock to others 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi. I am from Trieste (NE Italy). Last summer I went in Puglia and I experienced a cultural shock ahah the streets are awfull and people drive in a crazy way, in Northern Italy is pretty different. Also the language part, we do speak our dialects in the North but italian is spoken well, in Puglia I stuggled communicating in italian with italians, so I can immagine how they don't speak English...Also the food choice is wider here. What I also love about my region is that we are closed to Austria, Croatia and Slovenia..I feel that being so much closer to other countries make us more "international" and "modern". However what shocked me the most was the trash...it was everywhere, so sad :( in my town we have recycling service door to door and "isole ecologiche" where you can bring batteries, oil, electronics, bigger items, furniture etc or you can call a free service and they pick them up for you at your house.. the highway in Puglia are full of mattresses, random furniture and garbage...doesn't this shock you?

Anna! OMG. Yes. The garbage was a massive shock to my system! I literally conducted a community trash pickup (and only me and my boyfriend participated). It’s disgusting! To this day, Canada is still amongst the cleanest countries I’ve ever seen. We have such a respect for the outdoors and nature, and we work hard to conserve and protect it. In the south, I feel like the attitude is “the commune pays people to pick up the trash, so I don’t have to”. Or they have to pay for trash to be removed, and can’t afford it due to the lack of work and very low wages. Such a shame 😔 I haven’t been able to see Northern Italy yet with this whole pandemic situation.. But I hope to see some of the more modern Italian cities one day soon 🤞🏻

@@TheModernHippieProject this was so nice from you and your boyfriend, I am so sorry that nobody else participated :( ps. I want to add that also the northern part of Italy has its problems. I don't want my first comment to be interpreted wrong, South has a lot to offer and I really hope that the situation will get better. If you go North I would really suggest you to not concentrate only on Milan-Turin-Firenze-Venice, exploring smaller towns and countryside will give you a better insight. I wish we could travel now. 🤗

About food diversity: we are plenty of different food traditions The so called ethnic food you eat in restaurants is somehow westernized, not typical.
@TheModernHippieProject
@TheModernHippieProject 2 жыл бұрын
In the USA, I’d probably agree! The American culture can be a bit of a melting pot. But in Canada, I do think we have some more authentic experiences. Somewhat limited obviously by our colder climate, but we are often referred to as a cultural “mosaic” rather than a melting pot. So yes, some experiences could be westernized. But as someone who has traveled quite a bit, I do think Canada has much more authentic ethnic food experiences.

Questi colonialisti culturali si aspettano che tutto il mondo sia anglofono Why should we speak English?
@TheModernHippieProject
@TheModernHippieProject 3 жыл бұрын
It may have been a vague statement, but I never said anyone had to speak English, or that I expect them to. I was just surprised that not many do... And now that I’ve been in Italy for awhile, I’m even more surprised that many Italians don’t even know how to speak proper Italian. Many speak dialect, here in the south at least. Far from a cultural colonist.

Queste sono solo differenze comportamentali. Chi li rileva come "Shock Culturali", evidentemente dimostra una scarsa ampiezza di vedute, scarsezza di adattamento a situazioni nuove ed alla fine una non completamente nascosta idea che le proprie abitudini debbano essere il metro di confronto. La definizione di "Colonialista Culturale", in questo caso, non è proprio fuori luogo! Non riferita a solo questo video ma a tutti i video che trattano questi ridicoli "Shock Culturali";
